About Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary (Keetham Lake)

Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, known to almost everyone simply as Keetham Lake, is a tranquil freshwater ecosystem spread across a vast conservation area on the Agra-Delhi National Highway. It is a designated Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, a mark of its global ecological value and it serves as a vital refuge for a remarkable variety of birdlife, with over 165 species of resident and migratory birds recorded here.

For the visitor, Keetham Lake offers something quite different from the rest of Agra: a serene, natural escape from the city's crowded monuments, where the sounds are of birdsong and water rather than traffic and bustle. The great sheet of water, fringed with greenery and dotted with nesting islands, makes a beautiful and restful setting for a morning or an afternoon, whether you are a keen birdwatcher with binoculars or simply someone wanting a peaceful walk in nature. Combined with its other attractions, a bear rescue centre and a cultural site of real interest, it makes a rewarding half-day trip and a lovely complement to a day among Agra's heritage, as our things to do in Agra guide covers the full range of the city's attractions.

The birds of Keetham Lake

The great glory of Sur Sarovar is its birdlife and for anyone with an interest in birds, a visit is a real treat. The sanctuary is a haven for well over 165 species of resident and migratory birds, drawn to its waters and wetlands.

The sanctuary is at its most spectacular in the cooler winter months, when the lake attracts massive flocks of migratory waterfowl that travel great distances to winter here. Among the winter visitors you may hope to see are elegant flamingos, stately pelicans, the high-flying bar-headed geese and the majestic Sarus crane, the tallest of the flying birds, along with many ducks, waders and other species. Resident birds can be seen year round, but it is the arrival of the winter migrants from around October that turns the lake into a birdwatcher's paradise. Even for those who are not dedicated birders, the sight of great flocks of birds on and above the water, especially in the soft light of early morning, is a memorable and moving spectacle and a reminder of the natural riches that lie just beyond Agra's famous monuments.

Exploring the lake and watchtowers

Keetham Lake itself is a massive, pentagonal-shaped human-made reservoir and part of its appeal lies in how it has been shaped for both water storage and wildlife, featuring several constructed nesting islands that give the birds safe places to roost and breed.

There are a few lovely ways to explore the sanctuary. You can follow the walking trails along the bund, the embankment of the reservoir, which give you views out over the water and its birdlife as you stroll. For the best vantage point, head to the Darter Watch Tower, which offers panoramic views over the lake, a superb spot for watching the birds and taking in the sweep of the wetland. Binoculars are well worth bringing for the full experience. Moving quietly and patiently along the trails and from the tower, especially early in the day, gives you the best chance of seeing the birds at close quarters and enjoying the peace of the place. The open water and big skies give the sanctuary an almost coastal feel, particularly towards sunset, a surprising and lovely quality so far inland.

The Agra Bear Rescue Facility

One of the most remarkable features within the sanctuary grounds is the Agra Bear Rescue Facility, a place of real significance for animal lovers. This is the world's largest rescue and rehabilitation centre for sloth bears, run by the respected organisation Wildlife SOS and it is home to bears rescued from lives of cruelty.

A visit to see the rescued sloth bears, in their large, naturalistic enclosures within the sanctuary, is a moving and educational experience, especially for families and for anyone who cares about wildlife and its protection. It is important to note, however, that visiting the bears is not simply included with sanctuary entry: it requires prior booking through the facility's official website and a separate fee applies. So if you wish to see the bears as part of your trip, do plan and book ahead through the official channel and check the current arrangements and charges when you do. Combined with the birdwatching, the bear facility makes Keetham a rewarding destination for wildlife lovers of all ages.

Sur Kuti and the poet-saint Surdas

Keetham Lake also carries a rich cultural and spiritual association, which gives the place an added depth. Within the area is Sur Kuti, a site dedicated to the legendary blind Hindu devotional poet-saint Surdas.

Surdas, one of the most revered figures of the Bhakti devotional tradition and a celebrated poet of Krishna, is believed to have lived and composed much of his beautiful poetry here, along the riverine banks of the Yamuna. The sanctuary's very name, Sur Sarovar, honours him, "Sur" for Surdas and "Sarovar" meaning lake. For those interested in the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Braj region, which lies not far off, Sur Kuti adds a meaningful dimension to a visit, linking the natural beauty of the lake with the memory of one of India's great devotional poets. It is a quiet, reflective spot and a reminder of the deep roots this landscape has in Indian culture.

Keetham Lake timings

Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is open to visitors daily, with usual hours from around 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some entry gates remain operational a little later, until around 5:30 PM or 6:00 PM, depending on the sunset season, so the exact closing can vary through the year.

For the very best experience, timing matters. The early morning is the prime time for birdwatching, when the birds are most active and the sanctuary is at its calmest and most beautiful, often wrapped in a gentle mist. Arriving around 6:30 AM, soon after opening, rewards you with the finest birdwatching and the most magical, peaceful atmosphere. Alternatively, a visit later in the day, from around 4:00 PM, is lovely too, offering a relaxing, almost coastal vibe as the sun sets over the open waters. Either way, the ends of the day are far better than the harsh light of midday, both for the birds and for the atmosphere.

The best time to visit Keetham Lake

Keetham Lake can be visited year round, but the peak season and by far the best time for birdwatching, runs from October to March. During these cooler winter months, the lake comes alive with massive flocks of migratory birds, including the flamingos, pelicans, bar-headed geese and Sarus cranes that make the sanctuary famous, making it a truly spectacular time to visit. The pleasant winter weather also makes exploring the trails comfortable, as our best time to visit Agra guide covers the seasons in the city.

Within the day, as noted, the early morning is the prime time for both birds and atmosphere, with the late afternoon and sunset a lovely alternative. If birdwatching is your main aim, plan your trip for the winter months and get there early for the finest experience. Outside the migratory season, the lake is quieter in terms of birdlife but still a peaceful and pleasant natural escape.

Location and how to reach Keetham Lake

Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is situated near Runakata village, right off the Agra-Delhi National Highway, roughly 20 kilometres from central Agra, which makes it an easy half-day trip from the city and a natural stop for those travelling along the highway between Agra and Delhi, as our Delhi to Agra distance guide covers that route.

The simplest way to reach the sanctuary is by car or taxi from Agra, a drive of well under an hour. Once there, it is important to know that the lake and the main birdwatching spots lie a significant distance from the main highway entrance. It is therefore highly recommended to pay the vehicle entry fee and drive your own car or cab inside, right up to the final barricaded parking zone, rather than attempting to cover the distance on foot from the gate. From the barricade, you can then easily walk the remaining short distance to the watchtowers and trails. Planning to drive in saves a long, hot walk and leaves you more energy for enjoying the birds.

A word of warning: monkeys

One practical warning is worth heeding at Keetham Lake. The forest around the sanctuary has a large population of wild monkeys, which, as anywhere in India, can be bold and opportunistic around visitors and their belongings.

To avoid any trouble, take a few simple precautions. Do not leave loose items on two-wheelers, lock your car windows securely when you park and do not carry open food items while walking the trails, as these can attract the monkeys. Keep bags closed and valuables out of sight. With these sensible precautions, the monkeys are simply part of the natural setting and pose no problem and you can enjoy the sanctuary and its birds in peace. It is the kind of thing a local guide or driver will help you manage easily.

How to plan your visit

A visit to Keetham Lake makes a lovely half-day trip from Agra, best combined with an early start for the birds or timed for a relaxing sunset. Because it lies off the Agra-Delhi highway, it can also be worked neatly into the journey to or from Delhi. By private car with a driver, reaching the sanctuary, driving inside to the parking zone and managing the practicalities, including the cash tickets and any bear-facility booking, is all simple and stress-free.

Agra sits at the heart of the Golden Triangle and fits beautifully into a wider trip, as our one week North India itinerary guide maps out a route taking in Agra and more. For another quiet, offbeat corner of Agra, the serene riverside cenotaph of Jaswant Singh Ki Chhatri is well worth seeking out too, as our Jaswant Singh Ki Chhatri Agra guide covers that hidden gem.
