What is Laddu Holi?
Laddu Holi is the traditional, sweet ceremony that joyfully opens the week-long Braj Holi celebrations, held in Barsana, the birthplace of Radha, the beloved of Lord Krishna. It is a joyful, devotional and intensely colourful occasion and it marks the very start of the most famous, spectacular and long-running Holi festivities found anywhere in India.
By beautiful and much-loved tradition, Laddu Holi celebrates the happy moment when the formal invitation to Holi, sent across from Nandgaon, the town of Lord Krishna, is joyfully accepted at Barsana, the town of Radha. To mark this acceptance, the priests and gathered devotees fill the temple courtyard and throw showers of sweet laddus, the round golden Indian sweets, up high over the crowds, along with billowing clouds of colour, all while singing traditional bhajans or devotional songs, in praise of the divine couple Radha and Krishna. It is a wonderful, heart-warming and deeply devotional scene of pure sweetness, colour and song and it takes place the day before the world-famous Barsana Lathmar Holi, opening the whole festive season.
When is Laddu Holi 2027?
Laddu Holi in Barsana for 2027 is scheduled for Monday, 15 March 2027, at the historic Shri Radha Rani temple, also widely known as the Shriji temple. It falls, as it does every year, on the day before the famous and spectacular Barsana Lathmar Holi, opening the whole colourful season.
As with all of the Braj Holi festivities, the dates follow the traditional Hindu lunar calendar, so they shift from year to year and the exact dates and the precise programme can change, so it is always wise to reconfirm them nearer the time when planning your trip over from Jaipur. The wider Braj Holi season as a whole unfolds beautifully over about a week to ten days in the run-up to the main Holi festival, with the sweet Laddu Holi as its lovely opening celebration, as our Holi 2027 in Mathura and Vrindavan guide sets out the whole season's schedule in full.
Where is Laddu Holi held?
Laddu Holi is held at the historic Shri Radha Rani temple in Barsana, the town most sacred to Radha, in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh. The temple, also widely known as the Shriji or the Ladli Ji temple, is beautifully dedicated to Radha herself and it is one of the most revered, important and beautiful temples in all of Braj, the very heart and centre of Barsana's Holi celebrations.
One important thing to know before you set off is that the temple sits high on a hill above the town, reached by climbing a long, steep flight of stone stairs. This makes for a wonderfully beautiful and atmospheric setting, with fine sweeping views out over Barsana and the green Braj countryside, but it does mean a fair climb, so comfortable shoes and a little energy and patience are genuinely needed, especially when navigating the great, enthusiastic festival crowds on the day itself.
Laddu Holi and the Braj Holi week
Laddu Holi is the joyful opening of the whole Braj Holi season, which is the most celebrated, colourful and spectacular Holi in all of India, unfolding grandly over about a week across the various sacred towns of Braj, each with its own distinctive and famous celebration:
Laddu Holi at Barsana: the joyful sweet opening of the whole season, on 15 March 2027, at the Radha Rani temple.
Lathmar Holi at Barsana: the world-famous stick-and-shield tradition, the day after, when the spirited women of Barsana playfully drive off the visiting men of Nandgaon with sticks, as our Lathmar Holi 2027 in Barsana guide describes in full.
The wider Braj Holi: the colourful return Lathmar Holi at Nandgaon, the beautiful flower Holi at Vrindavan and many more days of colour, song and devotion across the whole region, all building up to the main Holi.
For very many travellers and devotees alike, experiencing the famous Braj Holi, from its sweet Laddu Holi opening right onward through the season, is a true, once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list experience, quite unlike Holi celebrated anywhere else in the world.
How to reach Barsana from Jaipur
Barsana lies in the Braj region, across the state border in Uttar Pradesh, about 230 km from Jaipur, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours by road, approached either through eastern Rajasthan or via Mathura:
By road via Bharatpur: the usual and most direct route runs from Jaipur east towards Bharatpur and Deeg, in eastern Rajasthan and then across the state border into Braj to reach Barsana. During the Holi season, however, the roads are very busy and often congested, so set out early and allow generous extra time for the whole journey.
Via Mathura: you can also travel over via Mathura, the main town of Braj, basing yourself comfortably there or in nearby Vrindavan and then visiting Barsana for the day of Laddu Holi, which is much the most comfortable and relaxed approach for enjoying the festival without a long same-day return.
By train: a train from Jaipur to Mathura, the nearest major railhead to Braj, followed by a short road transfer out to Barsana, is another good, restful and economical way to reach the area for the festival if you would prefer not to drive the whole long way yourself.
Because of the distance from Jaipur and the intense Holi crowds and traffic in Braj, the most comfortable and least stressful approach by far is to travel over and base yourself in Mathura or Vrindavan the night before and then make a well-planned, early-morning day trip out to the nearby town of Barsana for the Laddu Holi celebrations, rather than attempting the whole long round trip from Jaipur in a single day.
How to plan your Laddu Holi trip from Jaipur
A little careful planning ahead makes all the difference for a smooth and rewarding Braj Holi trip from Jaipur, given the distance and the crowds:
Base yourself in Braj: stay in Mathura or Vrindavan, the heart of Braj, rather than trying to do the long round trip out and back from Jaipur in a single tiring day.
Book your stay months ahead: rooms in Mathura and Vrindavan fill up very quickly indeed during the busy Holi season, so book well in advance, ideally several months ahead, to be sure of securing a good place.
Start very early: to reach Barsana in good time, climb up to the hilltop temple and find yourself a good spot before the very biggest crowds arrive, a genuinely early morning start on the day is essential.
Plan the wider Braj Holi: since it is a fair journey from Jaipur, consider staying on for the famous Lathmar Holi the next day and the wider Braj festivities, to make the very most of your trip.
Let us handle the logistics: the long travel, the timings, the stay and the crowds are all far easier and less stressful to manage with a well-organised trip arranged for you.
As our Golden Triangle with Mathura and Vrindavan guide shows, Braj also combines beautifully with a wider trip through the region and our things to do in Jaipur guide covers the Pink City of Jaipur itself, for those exploring it before setting off for Braj.

What to expect on the day
Laddu Holi is an intense, joyful, exhilarating and utterly unforgettable experience, well worth travelling for. The hilltop temple and its crowded courtyard fill to overflowing with huge, excited, happy crowds of devotees and visitors, the air thick with billowing clouds of colour, the sound of drums and devotional bhajans and the golden showers of sweet laddus tossed high over the swaying throng. It is loud, crowded, colourful, chaotic and deeply devotional all at once, a joyful whirl of sweetness, song and faith in one of the very holiest towns of Braj.
It is certainly not a quiet, gentle or orderly experience, so it is best to come well prepared for the crowds, the temple climb and the sheer overwhelming energy of it all and simply to relax and embrace the joy of the occasion. For those who love festivals, devotion and colour and who plan their trip carefully and well ahead, it is one of the most magical, moving and memorable days that India has to offer and a wonderful, uplifting start to the whole Braj Holi week, very well worth the journey over from Jaipur.
