What is Lathmar Holi?

Lathmar Holi, whose name means the Holi of hitting with sticks, is the world-famous, wonderfully playful and joyful tradition celebrated each year at Barsana, the town of Radha, in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh. It is by far the most celebrated, spectacular and photographed of all the many Braj Holi festivities and one of the most extraordinary festival spectacles anywhere in India.

The tradition springs directly from the beloved, ancient legends of Radha and Krishna. According to the much-loved stories, Lord Krishna, who came from the neighbouring town of Nandgaon, would come across to visit Radha and her friends, the gopis, at Barsana and would playfully tease and provoke them, upon which the spirited young women of Barsana would laughingly chase him and his companions away with sticks. This joyful, affectionate and light-hearted scene is lovingly re-enacted in Barsana every single year: the men come across from Nandgaon to Barsana and the women of Barsana, in a playful, festive and thoroughly good-humoured tradition, ward them off with lathis or long bamboo sticks, while the men crouch and defend themselves with leather shields. It is not aggression or real fighting in any way but pure joyful play, wrapped in clouds of colour, music, singing and devotion and it makes for a truly extraordinary and unforgettable sight.

When is Lathmar Holi 2027?

Lathmar Holi in Barsana for 2027 will take place on Tuesday, 16 March 2027, at the historic Shri Radha Rani temple. It is preceded, the day before, by Laddu Holi, the sweet opening ceremony of the season, on Monday, 15 March 2027, as our Laddu Holi 2027 in Barsana guide describes that lovely opening celebration in full.

As with all of the Braj Holi festivities, the dates follow the traditional Hindu lunar calendar, so they shift from year to year and the exact dates and the precise programme of events can change, so it is always wise to reconfirm nearer the time when planning. Lathmar Holi is the great highlight and centrepiece of the whole Braj Holi season, which unfolds over about a week to ten days in the run-up to the main Holi festival itself.

The schedule of events in Barsana and nearby, 2027

The Lathmar Holi celebrations run over several days across Barsana and neighbouring Nandgaon:

  • Laddu Holi, Barsana: Monday, 15 March 2027, at the Shri Radha Rani temple, the sweet opening ceremony of the whole Braj Holi season, where the priests and devotees joyfully shower sweet laddus over the gathered crowds.

  • Lathmar Holi, Barsana: Tuesday, 16 March 2027, at the Shri Radha Rani temple, the famous main event of them all, with the celebrated playful stick-and-shield tradition, as the women of Barsana ward off the visiting men of Nandgaon.

  • Lathmar Holi, Nandgaon: Wednesday, 17 March 2027 or Thursday, 18 March depending on the specific temple calendars, the return event, when the men of Barsana in their turn visit Nandgaon, Krishna's town and the playful roles are reversed.

Because the exact days, especially for Nandgaon, can vary by the temple calendar, it is worth reconfirming the precise programme close to your trip.

Where is Lathmar Holi held?

Lathmar Holi is centred on the historic Shri Radha Rani temple, also widely known as the Shriji temple, in Barsana, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. The temple, beautifully dedicated to Radha herself, is the spiritual heart of Barsana and the great focal point of the celebrations, with the festivities spilling joyfully out through the temple itself, its courtyards and the narrow, winding lanes of the old hilltop town below.

Entry to the festival is completely free, as it is an open, public spiritual festival welcoming all comers. The temple, though, sits high on a hill above the town, reached by a long, steep climb of stone stairs, so a good level of energy, patience and comfortable footwear are genuinely needed, especially given the enormous, high-spirited and jostling crowds on the day of Lathmar Holi.

What happens on the day

Lathmar Holi is an all-day celebration that builds to its famous climax:

  • The morning: the festivities and the music build up gradually through the morning hours, with colour, devotion and a growing, excited, good-natured crowd gathering at and around the hilltop temple and in the lanes below.

  • The samaj gayan: a wonderful and distinctive tradition of samaj gayan or devotional folk singing, unfolds through the day, with the singers of Barsana and Nandgaon exchanging traditional songs and witty, teasing couplets back and forth in a joyful, spirited and good-natured competitive musical dialogue.

  • The afternoon stick-play: the main event of the day, the world-famous playful stick-and-shield tradition, takes place in the afternoon, as the men of Nandgaon arrive at Barsana and the women of Barsana ward them off with their long lathis, all in the highest of good humour and colour.

  • The colour and energy: throughout the whole day, the air is thick with heavy showers of colour, song, drumming and an extraordinary, infectious, high-energy atmosphere, a swirling whirl of ancient tradition, faith and sheer joy.

Knowing that the main stick-play is in the afternoon helps you plan your day, arriving in good time for the build-up but pacing yourself for the long, energetic celebration.

How to reach Barsana from Delhi

Barsana lies in the Braj region, about 130 to 150 km from Delhi, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours by road, usually approached through Mathura:

  • By road: drive from Delhi towards Mathura on the fast Yamuna Expressway, then continue on the smaller local roads out to Barsana, which lies a little to the northwest. During the Holi season, though, the roads are extremely busy and often jammed, so leave very early and allow generous extra time.

  • Basing in Braj: most visitors sensibly stay in Mathura or Vrindavan, the two main towns of the region and travel out to Barsana on the day itself, as our Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan distance guide covers that route from Delhi in full.

  • By train: a train from Delhi to Mathura, the nearest major railhead, followed by a road transfer out to Barsana, is another good and restful way to reach the area for the festival.

With the intense Holi crowds and the heavy traffic on the roads, the smoothest and least stressful approach by far is to be based nearby in Braj, in Mathura or Vrindavan and to set out very early indeed for Barsana on the morning of Lathmar Holi.

How to plan your Lathmar Holi trip from Delhi

For such a hugely popular and crowded festival, planning well ahead really is everything to a smooth and rewarding trip:

  • Stay in Braj, not Delhi: base yourself in Mathura or Vrindavan for the festival days, rather than attempting a very long, exhausting same-day round trip out from Delhi and back.

  • Book far in advance: accommodation across Braj is booked out early for Holi, so reserve your rooms well ahead, ideally several months before.

  • Arrive early on the day: set out at dawn to reach Barsana, climb to the temple and secure a good vantage point before the biggest crowds and the afternoon stick-play.

  • Consider the full sequence: you may wish to see Laddu Holi the day before and the Nandgaon return event after, to experience the whole tradition.

  • Go with everything arranged: the crowds, timings and logistics are far easier to manage with an organised trip, as our Golden Triangle with Mathura and Vrindavan guide shows how Braj fits a wider trip.

Tips for visiting Lathmar Holi

  • Remember the main stick-play is in the afternoon; the morning builds gradually with music and colour.

  • Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for the hilltop temple climb and old clothes for the heavy colour.

  • Expect very large crowds, tight security and busy streets, so arrive early and stay calm and patient.

  • Protect your phone and camera from colour and water and keep your valuables secure in the crowds.

  • Entry is free, but book your Mathura or Vrindavan stay months ahead, as rooms sell out very quickly.

  • Stay well hydrated and pace yourself, as it is a long, high-energy day in the heat and the crowds.

  • Consider going with a guide or arranged trip to navigate the timings, crowds and logistics smoothly.

What to expect

Lathmar Holi is one of the most vivid, joyful and gloriously overwhelming festival experiences anywhere in the world. The hilltop temple and the whole town of Barsana fill to bursting with vast, exuberant, colour-drenched crowds, the air alive with heavy showers of colour, the pounding beat of drums, the traditional folk songs of the samaj gayan and the famous, good-humoured spectacle of the stick-and-shield play unfolding in the afternoon. It is loud, crowded, colourful, chaotic and utterly exhilarating and above all it is a deeply devotional celebration of the eternal, playful love of Radha and Krishna.

It is certainly not a quiet, gentle or orderly occasion, so it is best to come well prepared for the crowds, the temple climb, the heavy colour and the sheer overwhelming energy of it and simply give yourself over completely to the joy of the day. For those who love festivals, colour and ancient living tradition and who plan their trip well in advance, Lathmar Holi is one of the most magical, moving and unforgettable days that India or anywhere, has to offer.

I booked my Lathmar Holi 2026 trip to Barsana with Experience My India, and Abhay ji arranged everything very smoothly. The hotel in Vrindavan was comfortable, our car arrived on time for the early morning departure, and the entire route was planned around the heavy Holi traffic. The timing was well arranged, which helped us reach Barsana before the main crowds and enjoy the festival without unnecessary stress.

Our Barsana Holi trip with Experience My India was a wonderful experience. Abhay ji helped us select a good hotel in Mathura and arranged a comfortable private car for the festival days. The driver knew the route well and the early start was very helpful because the roads were extremely busy. The whole arrangement, from hotel to transport and sightseeing, was handled professionally.
