What is the Nandgaon Lathmar Holi?
The Nandgaon Lathmar Holi is the colourful, playful return leg of the famous Lathmar Holi tradition of Braj, celebrated in Nandgaon, the town of Lord Krishna, the day after Barsana's celebration. Where Barsana's Lathmar Holi sees the women of Barsana drive off the visiting men of Nandgaon, here at Nandgaon the roles are joyfully reversed, completing the two-town tradition.
On this day, the men of Barsana travel back across to Krishna's town of Nandgaon, carrying a ceremonial flag in procession to the historic Nand Bhavan Temple and there the spirited women of Nandgaon playfully drive them away with wooden staves or lathis, just as the women of Barsana had done to them the day before. It is the second half of the beautiful, age-old tradition rooted in the beloved legends of Radha and Krishna, a joyful, good-humoured and affectionate exchange of visits and playful stick-play between the two neighbouring towns, all wrapped up in clouds of colour, song and heartfelt devotion.
When is Nandgaon Lathmar Holi 2027?
Lathmar Holi at Nandgaon in 2027 will take place on Wednesday, 17 March 2027, the day right after Barsana's Lathmar Holi, which falls on 16 March, as our Lathmar Holi 2027 in Barsana from Jaipur guide describes that great celebration in full.
Some regional temple calendars note the festivities continuing into the evening or even the next day, but the celebration primarily falls on 17 March, the day after Barsana's. As with all the Braj Holi festivities, the dates follow the traditional Hindu lunar calendar and change from year to year and the exact programme can vary by temple, so it is always wise to reconfirm nearer the time, as our Holi 2027 in Mathura and Vrindavan guide sets out the full season's schedule.
Where is Nandgaon Lathmar Holi held?
Nandgaon Lathmar Holi is centred on the historic Nand Bhavan Temple in Nandgaon, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. Nandgaon is the town most closely associated with Lord Krishna's childhood home, said to be the very place where he was lovingly raised by his foster father Nanda, from whom the town takes its name and the Nand Bhavan Temple is its spiritual heart, standing high on a hill above the town.
Nandgaon lies just about 8 to 9 km from Barsana, the two towns facing each other companionably across the green Braj countryside, which is exactly why the playful exchange of visits and stick-play between them is so central to the whole beautiful tradition. The festival, much as at Barsana, takes place around and below the hilltop temple, with the joyful celebrations spilling out and filling the courtyards, the steps and the narrow lanes of the old town.
The sequence of Braj Holi around Nandgaon
The Nandgaon Lathmar Holi is one part of the wonderful multi-day sequence of the Braj Holi across Barsana and Nandgaon:
Laddu Holi at Barsana: the sweet, joyful opening of the whole season, on 15 March 2027, as our Laddu Holi 2027 in Barsana from Jaipur guide describes it in full.
Lathmar Holi at Barsana: the famous main stick-and-shield tradition, on 16 March 2027, when the spirited women of Barsana playfully drove off the visiting men of Nandgaon.
Lathmar Holi at Nandgaon: the colourful return event, on 17 March 2027, when the men of Barsana in their turn visit Nandgaon and the spirited women there playfully drive them off with sticks.
Together, these celebrations make up the most famous Holi in India and many travellers experience the whole beautiful sequence across the two towns, a truly unforgettable few days.
What happens on the day
The Nandgaon Lathmar Holi builds through the day to its famous, high-energy climax:
The morning prayers: the day begins gently and devotionally with morning prayers at the historic Nand Bhavan Temple, as the crowds slowly gather and the anticipation and atmosphere steadily build up through the hilltop town.
The return play: in the afternoon, the men of Barsana arrive in colourful procession carrying their ceremonial flag to the temple and the spirited women of Nandgaon playfully drive them away with their long wooden lathis, the famous and much-loved return stick-play that gives the day its meaning.
Into the evening: the main stick-play and the wider festivities begin in the afternoon and then continue joyfully well into the evening hours, making for a long, lively and thoroughly energetic celebration.
The colour and song: all the while, the air fills with vibrant, swirling clouds of coloured powder or gulal, the joyful sound of traditional folk songs and steady drumming and the enthusiastic, ringing chants of "Jaya Radhe!" echoing out across the crowds.
Knowing that the main play runs from the afternoon into the evening helps you time your visit, arriving for the build-up but pacing yourself for a long celebration.
How to reach Nandgaon from Jaipur
Nandgaon lies in the Braj region, across the border in Uttar Pradesh, about 235 km from Jaipur, roughly 5 hours by road, just beyond neighbouring Barsana:
By road via Bharatpur: the usual and most direct route runs from Jaipur east towards Bharatpur and Deeg, in eastern Rajasthan and then across the state border into Braj to Barsana and on the short way to Nandgaon. During the Holi season the roads are very busy and often congested, so set out early and allow generous extra time.
Via Mathura: you can also travel over via Mathura, the main town of Braj, basing yourself comfortably there or in nearby Vrindavan and then visiting Nandgaon for the day, which is much the most comfortable and relaxed approach for the festival.
By train: a train from Jaipur to Mathura, the nearest major railhead to Braj, followed by a short road transfer out to Nandgaon, is another good, restful and economical way to reach the area if you would prefer not to drive the whole long way.
Because of the distance from Jaipur and the intense Holi crowds and traffic in Braj, the smoothest and least stressful approach by far is to travel over the night before, base yourself nearby in Mathura or Vrindavan and then set out very early in the morning for Nandgaon on the day of its Lathmar Holi, ideally having seen Barsana's celebration the day before.
How to plan and stay safe
Nandgaon Lathmar Holi is joyful but crowded and lively, so a little planning and care go a long way, especially after the journey from Jaipur:
Watch from a safe vantage point: the crowds are truly massive and the stick-play can get quite intense, so it is genuinely best to watch from a safe, elevated spot such as a rooftop terrace or the raised edge of the courtyard, rather than from the thick of the action itself.
Book your stay months ahead: rooms in Mathura and Vrindavan fill up many months in advance during the peak Braj Holi season, so it is essential to reserve your accommodation well ahead of your trip.
Arrive early: set out early in the morning to reach Nandgaon, find your safe spot and settle in comfortably before the biggest afternoon crowds arrive for the stick-play.
Go with everything arranged: the long travel, crowds, timings and logistics are far easier with an organised trip, as our Golden Triangle with Mathura and Vrindavan guide shows how Braj fits a wider trip.

Tips for visiting Nandgaon Lathmar Holi
Watch the stick-play from a safe vantage point, like a terrace or the courtyard edge, as it can get intense.
Wear old clothes you do not mind getting ruined with colour and protect your eyes from the gulal.
Protect your phone, camera and electronic devices from the colour and the crowds.
Remember the main play runs from the afternoon into the evening, after the morning prayers.
Book your Mathura or Vrindavan stay months in advance, as rooms fill up fast during Holi.
Allow a long travel time from Jaipur, as the roads into Braj are very busy during Holi.
What to expect
The Nandgaon Lathmar Holi is a vivid, joyful and genuinely thrilling celebration, the colourful climax and completion of the Barsana and Nandgaon Holi. The hilltop town fills to bursting with huge, exuberant, colour-drenched crowds, the air thick with vibrant clouds of gulal, the sound of traditional folk songs, drumming and the ringing chants of "Jaya Radhe!" and the famous return stick-play as the men of Barsana are playfully driven off by the spirited women of Nandgaon through the afternoon and on into the evening.
It is loud, crowded, colourful and full of infectious energy and above all it is a deeply devotional celebration of Radha and Krishna and their two beloved neighbouring towns. It is certainly not a quiet, gentle or orderly occasion and the stick-play can get genuinely intense, so it is wise to watch from a safe spot, come well prepared for the crowds and the heavy colour and simply embrace the joy of it. For those who love festivals, colour and ancient living tradition and who plan their trip well ahead, it is one of the most magical and unforgettable experiences in all of India and very well worth the journey over from Jaipur.
