About Mariam's Tomb

The Tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani, commonly known as Mariam's Tomb, is a serene and often overlooked Mughal historical site in Sikandra, on the edge of Agra. While most visitors to Sikandra come for the great Tomb of Akbar nearby, Mariam's Tomb, just a short distance away, offers a uniquely peaceful escape from Agra's heavier tourist crowds and a chance to encounter a remarkable piece of Mughal history in quiet surroundings.

The tomb is dedicated to Mariam-uz-Zamani, a Rajput princess of Amer originally named Heer Kunwari, who became the favourite wife of the great Emperor Akbar and the mother of his heir, Emperor Jahangir. As the mother of an emperor and the wife of one of the greatest of the Mughals, she was one of the most important women of her age and her tomb is a fitting, if understated, memorial. For travellers interested in the deeper human history of the Mughal court, it is a genuinely moving and significant place.

Who was Mariam-uz-Zamani?

Mariam-uz-Zamani was a Rajput princess of Amer, near present-day Jaipur, born Heer Kunwari. Through her marriage she became the favourite wife of Emperor Akbar and, most importantly for the dynasty, the mother of his son and successor, Emperor Jahangir. Her union is often held up as a symbol of the alliances between the Mughals and the Rajputs that helped shape the empire and in popular culture and later legend she is sometimes associated with the name Jodha Bai, though her historical title was Mariam-uz-Zamani.

Her importance is reflected in a striking fact about her tomb: Mariam-uz-Zamani is the only wife of Emperor Akbar to be buried in such close proximity to him, her mausoleum lying only about a kilometre from his own great tomb at Sikandra. This nearness speaks to the special place she held and makes a visit to the two tombs together a meaningful pairing for anyone interested in the story of Akbar and his court.

The history of Mariam's Tomb

The history of the monument is unusual and fascinating, because, unlike most Mughal mausoleums built entirely from scratch, Mariam's Tomb began life as something quite different. The structure was originally built in 1495 AD, well before the Mughals, as an open pleasure pavilion, a baradari, by Sikandar Lodi of the Lodi dynasty, who gave his name to Sikandra. It was, in its first life, a garden pavilion rather than a tomb.

After the passing of Mariam-uz-Zamani, her son, Emperor Jahangir, acquired this older Lodi-era structure and transformed it into a mausoleum for his mother. Between 1623 and 1627 AD, he had it heavily remodelled with Mughal sensibilities and built a crypt underneath to house her remains, converting the open pavilion into her official tomb. This layering of histories, a Lodi pavilion reborn as a Mughal royal tomb, gives Mariam's Tomb a special character and makes it a fascinating study for those who love history and architecture.

The unique architecture of Mariam's Tomb

Mariam's Tomb stands out architecturally from the more famous Mughal mausoleums and this is part of its charm. Most notably, it has no central dome, which immediately sets it apart from monuments like the Taj Mahal or Akbar's Tomb. Instead, the structure takes the form of a three-storey, square, pyramid-like layout, rising in tiers and it is flanked at each corner by beautiful ornamental octagonal towers.

Built of red sandstone, the facades of the tomb display an elegant blend of artistic traditions, combining traditional Hindu sculptural motifs with geometric Islamic patterns, a fusion very much in keeping with the inclusive spirit of Akbar's age and fitting for the tomb of a Rajput princess who became a Mughal empress. One especially interesting feature is that the tomb contains three distinct tombstones for the empress: one in the underground mortuary chamber where she actually rests, one on the ground floor and a final cenotaph placed openly on the terrace above. This arrangement and the domeless, tiered red sandstone form, make Mariam's Tomb a quietly distinctive and rewarding monument to explore, quite unlike anything else in Agra. It makes a fascinating contrast with the great marble domes of the city, such as the Taj Mahal, as our Taj Mahal ticket price and timings guide covers that monument.

Mariam's Tomb timings and tickets

Mariam's Tomb is open to visitors daily, generally from sunrise to sunset like most of Agra's monuments, though as timings can vary it is worth reconfirming the current hours when you plan your visit. As it is a quiet, uncrowded site, you can usually explore it in peace.

An important practical point is that physical tickets are no longer sold at the gate, so all visitors must purchase their entry passes online before arriving. At the time of writing, the ticket costs are modest: for Indian nationals the fee is around ₹25, reduced to about ₹20 with the cashless or online discount; for foreign tourists it is around ₹300, reduced to about ₹250 with the online discount, plus a ₹500 Agra Development Authority (ADA) toll tax. Children under the age of 15 enter free. As fees and rules are updated from time to time, it is always wise to reconfirm the current charges before your visit and above all to remember to buy your ticket online in advance, since you cannot buy it at the gate.

How to book Mariam's Tomb tickets online

Because tickets must be bought online, it is worth knowing the official, safe places to book. You can secure your official tickets through the government portals: the primary one is the official Archaeological Survey of India gateway, the ASI PayGov portal, where you select the Agra Circle and look for Mariam's Tomb at Sikandra. Tickets can alternatively be booked through recognised regional and event platforms such as the OBMS Rajasthan Tourism portal or District.in.

It is best to book through these official or recognised channels to be sure of a genuine ticket and to book before you set off for Sikandra, so that you are not turned away at the gate. If you are travelling with us, we take care of all of this for you, so the tickets and timing are simply sorted.

Location and how to reach Mariam's Tomb

Mariam's Tomb is located in Sikandra, on the Mathura Road, near the Pathwari Mandir at Kailash Mode, on the north-western edge of Agra in the direction of Mathura and Delhi. Its great advantage is its proximity to the Tomb of Akbar, which lies only about 1 kilometre away, so the two are very easily visited together.

The tomb is best reached by private car, taxi or auto-rickshaw and because Sikandra is on the main road out of Agra towards Delhi and Mathura, it is also convenient to combine a visit with arrival in or departure from the city. The most natural pairing, though, is with the great Akbar's Tomb right beside it, as our Akbar's Tomb Sikandra guide covers that magnificent mausoleum of the emperor himself.

Combine Mariam's Tomb with Akbar's Tomb and more

The most rewarding way to visit Mariam's Tomb is as part of a tour of Sikandra and Agra's quieter, lesser-visited monuments, which together reveal a deeper, more human side of the city beyond the big three sights.

Just about a kilometre away stands the great Tomb of Akbar, a magnificent mausoleum well worth seeing alongside Mariam's Tomb, making a natural and meaningful pairing of the emperor and his queen. Beyond Sikandra, Agra has a wonderful collection of other offbeat monuments, such as the tile-clad Chini Ka Rauza, the ancient Mughal garden of Ram Bagh and the jewel-like Baby Taj, as our Chini Ka Rauza Agra guide, our Ram Bagh Aram Bagh Agra guide and our Itimad-ud-Daulah Baby Taj Agra guide each cover those monuments. Together they make a rich itinerary for those who want more than the headline sights, as our things to do in Agra guide covers the full range of the city.

The best time to visit Mariam's Tomb

Mariam's Tomb can be visited at any time of year, but the best season to explore Agra and its monuments in comfort is the cool period from about October to March, when the weather is pleasant for sightseeing, as our best time to visit Agra guide covers the seasons in the city.

Within the day, the softer light of the morning or the late afternoon is loveliest for appreciating the red sandstone and the carvings and the cooler hours are the most pleasant for exploring. As the tomb is quiet and uncrowded at almost any time, you have the freedom to choose your moment and it makes a peaceful stop on a day of Agra sightseeing.

How to plan your visit

A visit to Mariam's Tomb takes only a short while, perhaps half an hour, so it is best enjoyed alongside Akbar's Tomb and the other sights of Agra, rather than as a trip in itself. By private car with a driver, it is easy to combine Mariam's Tomb and Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra with the great sights of the city and to time it conveniently with your arrival or departure, as Sikandra is on the road towards Delhi and Mathura.

Agra itself is easily reached as part of the Golden Triangle, by road from Delhi, as our Delhi to Agra distance guide covers that journey and it fits beautifully into a wider trip, as our one week North India itinerary guide maps out a route taking in Agra and more. The key practical thing to remember is to book your Mariam's Tomb ticket online in advance.

What to expect
