The week-long Braj Holi, the most famous in India, runs from about 15 to 23 March. From Jaipur it is about 185 km. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans trips.

Why is Mathura and Vrindavan Holi so famous?
Holi is celebrated joyously all across India, but nowhere is it as famous, as long, as devotional or as spectacular as in Braj, the sacred land of Krishna, around Mathura and Vrindavan. This is the very land where, according to the beloved and ancient legends, Lord Krishna himself played Holi with Radha and the gopis, so the festival here is celebrated with a depth of tradition, meaning, devotion and sheer joyful exuberance found quite literally nowhere else on earth.
Rather than a single day of colour, Holi in Braj unfolds grandly over more than a week, from around 15 to 23 March in 2027, with a different, famous and distinctive celebration in a different sacred town almost every single day, from the sweet Laddu Holi and the stick-wielding Lathmar Holi to the beautiful gentle flower Holi, the tender Gokul Holi and the boisterous Huranga. The main day of colour, the Rangwali Holi, falls on 22 March, with the great bonfires of Holika Dahan the evening before. For travellers coming from Jaipur, experiencing this great festival in its true spiritual home, among the temples and lanes where the stories are set, is one of the most magical and unforgettable experiences that India has to offer.
The full Braj Holi 2027 schedule
The Braj Holi celebrations begin a week or so earlier than the main colour Holi, with traditional temple rituals unfolding across the various towns of the region. Here is the full schedule for 2027, with each celebration and its town, day by day. Remember that the dates all follow the traditional Hindu lunar calendar and so can shift from year to year and vary slightly by temple, so it is always wise to reconfirm them nearer the time.
Monday, 15 March: Laddu Holi, Barsana
The sweet, joyful opening of the whole season at the Shri Radha Rani temple in Barsana, where the priests shower sweet laddus over the gathered crowds, as our Laddu Holi 2027 in Barsana from Jaipur guide describes in full.
Tuesday, 16 March: Lathmar Holi, Barsana
The world-famous stick-and-shield tradition at Barsana, where the women of Barsana playfully drive off the men of Nandgaon with sticks, as our Lathmar Holi 2027 in Barsana from Jaipur guide describes.
Wednesday, 17 March: Lathmar Holi, Nandgaon
The return event in Krishna's town of Nandgaon, where the roles reverse and the men of Barsana visit, as our Lathmar Holi 2027 in Nandgaon from Jaipur guide describes.
Thursday, 18 March: Phoolon Wali Holi, Vrindavan
The beautiful flower Holi at the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan, where priests shower fresh flowers instead of colour, as our Phoolon Wali Holi 2027 in Vrindavan from Jaipur guide describes.
Friday, 19 March: Gokul Holi
The gentle, tender Chhadimar Holi at Gokul, played with soft canes in honour of the infant Krishna, as our Chhadimar Holi 2027 in Gokul from Jaipur guide describes in full.
Saturday, 20 March: Widow's Holi, Vrindavan
A moving, beautiful and uplifting celebration at the Gopinath temple in Vrindavan, where the widows of the town, long excluded from such joyful festivities by old social custom, now come together to joyfully play Holi with colour and flowers. It is a heart-warming and dignified modern tradition of inclusion, joy and devotion and one of the most touching sights of the whole Braj Holi season.
Sunday, 21 March: Holika Dahan and the Dwarkadhish Holi, Mathura
The evening of Holika Dahan, the great ceremonial bonfires lit across Braj to mark the triumph of good over evil. The same day also sees the colourful Holi celebration at the Dwarkadhish temple in Mathura, in the Pushtimarg tradition, as our Mathura Holi 2027 at the Dwarkadhish temple from Jaipur guide describes.
Monday, 22 March: Main Rangwali Holi
The great main day of colour, Rangwali Holi, also known as Dhulendi, celebrated with huge joy across Mathura, Vrindavan and all of Braj, when everyone, young and old, takes to the streets and lanes to play freely with coloured powder, water and song, the exuberant and much-anticipated climax of the whole festival and the day most people picture when they think of Holi.
Tuesday, 23 March: Huranga Holi, Dauji temple
The world-famous Huranga at the Dauji temple in Baldeo, honouring Lord Balarama, the boisterous grand finale of the whole long Braj Holi season, as our Dauji Huranga 2027 from Jaipur guide describes in full.
How to reach Mathura and Vrindavan from Jaipur
Mathura and Vrindavan, the beating heart of Braj, lie about 185 km from Jaipur, roughly 3.5 to 4 hours by road, with the surrounding Holi towns of Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul and Baldeo all within easy reach around them:
By road via Bharatpur: the usual and most direct route runs from Jaipur east towards Bharatpur, in eastern Rajasthan and then across the state border into Braj to Mathura and Vrindavan. During the Holi season the roads are very busy and congested, so set out early and allow generous extra time.
By train: Mathura has a major, very well-connected railway junction, reached by several trains from Jaipur, a good, restful and economical way to cover the distance without the long drive.
Basing in Braj: base yourself centrally in Mathura or Vrindavan, which are convenient for reaching all the surrounding celebrations and simply travel out to the various towns on their respective days.
Most travellers drive or take a train from Jaipur to Mathura, base themselves there or in Vrindavan and travel out to the various Holi celebrations, as our Holi 2027 in Mathura and Vrindavan guide also covers the whole season.
How to plan the Holi week from Jaipur
With so many different celebrations spread across more than a week and several towns, a little careful planning ahead really helps you make the most of your Braj Holi trip from Jaipur:
Decide how long to stay: come for just a single famous event, such as the celebrated Lathmar Holi, in a short trip or stay on longer to experience several, from the sweet Laddu Holi right through to the Dauji Huranga grand finale.
Base yourself in Braj: stay right in Mathura or Vrindavan, central and convenient for all the celebrations, rather than tiring yourself travelling back and forth from Jaipur each and every day.
Book months in advance: accommodation right across Braj fills up many months ahead for the Holi season, which is by far the busiest time of year here, so reserve your stay as early as you possibly can.
Plan around the dates: pick out the particular celebrations you most want to see and carefully plan your days around their timings, allowing for the heavy crowds and the travel between the different towns.
Let us handle it all: with the huge crowds, the many timings, the travel between towns and the scarce rooms, a well-organised trip makes the whole Holi week far smoother and more enjoyable, as our Golden Triangle with Mathura and Vrindavan guide shows how Braj fits a wider trip.

Tips for Holi 2027 in Braj
Book your Mathura or Vrindavan stay many months in advance, as the rooms sell out very early.
Start very early each day to reach the celebrations in good time and beat the biggest crowds.
Wear old clothes you do not mind completely ruining and protect your eyes, phone and camera.
Be prepared for massive crowds, tight security, heavy colour and high energy throughout the week.
Reconfirm the exact dates nearer the time, as they follow the Hindu lunar calendar and can shift.
Allow extra travel time from Jaipur, as the roads into Braj are very busy during the Holi season.
Consider a guide or an arranged trip to manage the travel between towns, timings and crowds smoothly.
What to expect
Holi in Braj is an overwhelming, joyful and utterly unforgettable experience, quite unlike anywhere else in the world. For more than a week on end, the towns of the region fill to bursting with vast, exuberant crowds, clouds of vibrant colour, music, song, drumming and heartfelt devotion, each day bringing a different famous celebration in a different sacred town, from the sweets and sticks of the early days to the flowers and the great bonfires that follow. It is loud, crowded, colourful, chaotic and intensely spiritual all at once, a complete and joyful immersion in the living faith and festive spirit of the land of Krishna and very well worth the journey over from Jaipur.
It is certainly not a quiet, gentle or orderly experience, so it is best to come well prepared for the crowds, the heavy colour and the sheer energy of it all and simply to give yourself over completely to the magic of the occasion. For those who love festivals, colour and ancient living tradition and who plan their trip carefully and well ahead, Holi in Mathura and Vrindavan is quite simply one of the greatest festival experiences to be found anywhere on earth.

A Braj Holi trip from Jaipur is one of the most rewarding, joyful and memorable journeys in all of India, but with its distance, its huge crowds, busy jammed roads, scarce and quickly-booked rooms, its many scattered celebrations and shifting festival timings, it is also among the very most demanding to arrange well, so it is easiest and far more enjoyable when the whole thing is handled and coordinated for you. That is exactly what we do, your stay in Mathura or Vrindavan booked well ahead and the travel over from Jaipur, the essential early starts and the timings for all the particular Holi celebrations you most wish to see carefully arranged, so that you can simply relax and soak up the colour, the song and the devotion of it all.
