The project once planned as the Mughal Museum in Agra has been renamed the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum and is still under construction, not yet open to the public, with the state government targeting completion by the end of 2026. For Mughal relics now, visit the Taj Museum or Agra Fort. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, arranges Agra tours.

If you have searched for the Mughal Museum in Agra, here is the key thing to know: the project has been renamed and repurposed as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum and it is still under construction rather than open to visitors. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages explains the project's story and current status, what the museum is planned to feature and, most usefully, where you can see genuine Mughal-era artefacts in Agra right now, so your trip is not left short, whether you are in the city independently or on a Golden Triangle tour.

I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years guiding travellers across the region for Experience My India I have often been asked about this much-discussed museum, so here is a clear, up-to-date picture of where things stand and what to do instead while it is being built.

What happened to the Mughal Museum?

The institution that many still search for as the Mughal Museum has had a notable history. The project was initially proposed in 2015, under the then Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, to showcase Mughal-era culture, art and history in Agra. In September 2020, the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath changed the focus of the project and renamed it, with the state government stating that its funding would be dedicated to national heroes rather than, in the government's words, celebrating historical invaders.

As a result, the institution is now officially the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum, with a revised curatorial vision. This is a matter of recent public policy and we set it out here simply as a factual account so that travellers searching for the Mughal Museum understand why they may not find it under that name. Whatever its name and focus, the practical point for visitors today is the same: the complex is still being built and is not yet open to the public.

Current status: still under construction

As things stand, construction of the museum is ongoing and the fully conceptualised complex remains closed to the general public. While some temporary preview displays or demonstrations have reportedly been hosted intermittently, there is no regular public access and there are no fixed ticket prices or operating hours, because the facility is not yet operational.

The Uttar Pradesh state government has said it aims to complete and officially launch the museum by the end of 2026. However, large public projects often see their timelines shift and this is a date-sensitive situation, so you should always reconfirm the very latest status before planning a visit around it. Ticket fees, booking portals and weekly timings will only be released by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department once an opening date is set. Until then, we would not advise building an Agra itinerary around this museum and the open alternatives below are the way to enjoy the city's history now.

What the museum is planned to feature

When complete, the museum is planned as a substantial cultural complex, with around 5,200 square metres of exhibition space and its revised vision means it will no longer serve purely as a gallery of the Mughal dynasty. Its announced focus spans several themes.

Planned theme

Focus

Maratha legacy

The life, military strategy and valour of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

The Agra episode

Shivaji's standoff with Aurangzeb and his legendary escape from Agra

Braj culture

The heritage, artefacts and cultural evolution of the surrounding Braj region

The architecture itself is notable: the complex has been designed as a collaboration between the renowned international firm David Chipperfield Architects of Berlin and the Noida-based Studio Archohm. The design language is said to bridge modernism with traditional Mughal spatial principles, with clean geometry, carved stone screens, rhythmic columns and wide open public spaces. One of the planned highlights is a set of interactive exhibits on Shivaji's historic escape from house arrest in Agra, a dramatic episode of 17th-century history. The Braj galleries will be of particular interest to visitors exploring the wider region, which our Agra to Vrindavan distance guide covers.

Where it is located

The complex is being built on Taj East Gate Road, roughly 1.3 kilometres from the eastern gate of the Taj Mahal, placing it close to the main monument zone. It stands near the area associated with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj memorial and directly across from the mighty Agra Fort on the historical map of the city, itself the site of Shivaji's famous encounter with Aurangzeb.

Its position near the Taj East Gate means that, once open, it will be very easy to combine with a visit to the Taj Mahal and the other sights on that side of the city. For now, though, it is the open attractions nearby that are worth your time and the location is useful mainly as a landmark. For getting around the city, our Agra Metro guide covers the network and our Noida to Agra distance guide sets out the route into the city.

Where to see Mughal artefacts in Agra now

Since the museum is not open, here is the genuinely useful part: where to see real Mughal-era history in Agra today. There are two excellent options, both long-established and open to visitors. Ticket prices below were correct at the time of writing and should be reconfirmed, as monument fees are revised periodically.

The Taj Museum is the closest operational alternative for genuine Mughal relics. Located inside the Taj Mahal complex, within the western Jal Mahal, it displays authentic royal decrees or farmans original architectural maps of the mausoleum, Mughal miniature paintings, calligraphy specimens, historic coins and authentic weaponry. Access is included with a standard Taj Mahal entry ticket, so there is no separate charge and it keeps the same hours and Friday closure as the Taj itself.

The second option is the magnificent Agra Fort, the UNESCO World Heritage site directly opposite the Shivaji memorial area, whose grand palaces, courtyards and architectural galleries are themselves a superb record of Mughal history and which, unlike the Taj, is open every day of the year. Children under 15 enter free. Between them, these two sites more than make up for the museum's absence for now.

What else to see nearby

Beyond the Taj Museum and Agra Fort, the city is full of Mughal and historical sights to fill your time richly. The riverside garden of Mehtab Bagh, with its sunset view of the Taj and the exquisite Itmad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj, are both wonderful, while a little outside the city the red-sandstone Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri is unmissable. You can see the full range of the city's sights in our Agra attractions guide and plan the season with our wider travel guides. Agra's genuine Mughal heritage is so abundant that no visitor needs feel short-changed by one museum still being built.

Tips on the Mughal Museum and alternatives

  • Do not plan your Agra trip around this museum yet; it is still under construction and not open.

  • Reconfirm the latest status before travelling, as the opening date is a moving target.

  • For genuine Mughal relics now, head to the Taj Museum inside the Taj complex, included with your ticket.

  • Visit the Agra Fort for grand Mughal palaces and galleries, open every day of the year.

  • Remember the Taj Museum, like the Taj itself, is closed on Fridays; the Agra Fort is not.

  • Search for the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum, its current official name, for the latest updates.

  • Build your history day around the Taj, the fort and the other open monuments instead.

What to expect

If you are hoping to visit the Mughal Museum in Agra, the honest picture is that there is nothing to visit yet: the project has been renamed the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum and is still under construction, with an official target of completion by the end of 2026 that is best reconfirmed. When it opens, it is planned as a substantial, architecturally striking complex focused on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, his famous Agra episode and the culture of the Braj region.

For now, though, you can expect to see Agra's real Mughal history at the excellent Taj Museum, included with your Taj ticket and at the magnificent Agra Fort, along with the city's many other monuments. Far from a disappointment, a history-focused day in Agra remains one of the richest anywhere in India, museum or no museum and we are always glad to help you make the most of it.

The institution is now officially the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum. It was renamed from the originally proposed Mughal Museum in September 2020, along with a revised curatorial focus. If you are looking for the latest news, updates or an eventual opening date, it is best to search under this current official name rather than the older Mughal Museum title. The practical situation for visitors is unchanged either way: the complex is still being built and is not yet open to the public.

The Uttar Pradesh state government has said it aims to complete and officially launch the museum by the end of 2026. However, large public projects frequently see their timelines shift, so this should be treated as a target rather than a confirmed date and reconfirmed before you plan around it. Ticket fees, booking portals and weekly timings will only be released by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department once an official opening date is set. Until then, we would not advise building an Agra itinerary around the museum.
