What is the National Zoological Park?
The National Zoological Park, commonly called the Delhi Zoo, is a large, 176-acre wildlife park in the heart of central Delhi, on Mathura Road beside the historic Purana Qila fort. One of the most visited attractions in the city, it is home to over 1,350 animals across more than 130 species, from big cats to birds and reptiles, set in green, landscaped grounds.
More than just an animal park, it is a leafy, spacious escape in the middle of the city, dotted with ponds, lawns and, remarkably, historic Mughal-era monuments. Established in the late 1950s and opened in 1959, it has been a beloved fixture of Delhi life for generations, where countless families have brought their children to see the tigers and elephants. Popular above all with families and children, it makes for a relaxed, enjoyable day out, combining wildlife, greenery and a touch of history, all within easy reach of the city's other sights and a welcome breath of open space in a crowded metropolis.
The animals and wildlife
The heart of the zoo, of course, is its wonderful collection of animals, birds and reptiles:
Big cats: the zoo is famous for its Royal Bengal tigers, its striking white tigers and its majestic Asiatic lions, always among the biggest draws and a thrill to see up close.
Large mammals: Indian rhinoceros, swamp deer and other large mammals roam the spacious enclosures, along with many more species from India and beyond.
The aviary: a large walk-in aviary is home to a variety of exotic and local birds, where you can wander among them, a delight for birdwatchers and children alike.
The reptile house: a reptile house displays gharials, mugger crocodiles, pythons and other reptiles, fascinating and a little thrilling for younger visitors.
And many more: in all, over 1,350 animals across more than 130 species make their home here, from deer and antelope to primates, bears and waterbirds, so there is a great deal to see across the grounds.
Seeing tigers, lions and rhinos up close is a highlight for visitors of every age and especially thrilling for children, many of whom are seeing such magnificent animals for the very first time. Allow time at the big-cat and rhino enclosures in particular, as these are the crowd favourites and worth a patient wait for a good view.
The Mughal monuments in the zoo
One of the most unusual and delightful things about the Delhi Zoo is that its grounds contain historic Mughal-era structures. Because the park sits on old ground right beside Purana Qila, at the edge of what was once the city of Shergarh, its lawns are dotted with monuments dating back centuries, quietly sharing the space with the animals.
These include a 16th-century citadel, the Azimganj Serai, an old serai or resting place for travellers on the Mughal road and a Kos Minar, one of the milestone towers built at regular intervals along the imperial highways to mark distances. Coming across these ancient, weathered structures among the animal enclosures adds a wonderful, unexpected layer of history to a visit and makes the Delhi Zoo quite unlike an ordinary wildlife park anywhere, a place where the natural world and the historical past sit quietly side by side.
National Zoological Park timings
The zoo keeps different hours in summer and winter and is closed on Fridays.
Season | Timings |
Summer (1 April to 15 October) | 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM (bookings close 5:00 PM) |
Winter (16 October to 31 March) | 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM |
Closed | Every Friday and national holidays |
The most important thing to know is that the zoo is closed every Friday and on national holidays, so plan your visit for another day. It opens a little earlier in summer and an early start is best in any season, both to see the animals when they are most active and to avoid the midday heat.
National Zoological Park tickets
Tickets are affordable, making the zoo a great-value family outing.
Visitor | Ticket price |
Adults | 80 rupees |
Children (5 to 12 years) | 40 rupees |
Children under 5 | Free |
Tickets can be booked online in advance through the official National Zoological Park portal, which is well worth doing to save time and avoid queues at the gate, especially at weekends and during the holidays when the zoo is busy. Prices can change over time, so reconfirm the current charges when you book and keep your booking confirmation handy for entry.
Getting around the zoo
The zoo is large, at 176 acres, so it helps to plan how you will explore it:
On foot: there is a walking trail of about 3 to 4 km that takes you around the enclosures, a pleasant walk in the cooler months amid the greenery, though a fair distance for very young children or in the heat.
Battery-operated vehicles: for those who prefer to ride, battery-operated vehicles can be rented inside the zoo, a good, comfortable option for families with small children, elderly visitors or a hot summer day, letting you cover the grounds without tiring.
Whichever you choose, allow at least a few hours to see the zoo at a relaxed pace and wear comfortable shoes and a hat if you plan to walk. Do not try to rush it; the pleasure of the zoo is in wandering slowly and stopping at the enclosures that catch your eye.
Visitor guidelines and what to know
A few practical rules and tips make for a smooth visit:
Food policy: outside food is strictly not allowed inside the zoo and only drinking water may be carried in; there is a cafeteria or canteen on-site for meals and snacks.
Cloakroom: a cloakroom near the entrance stores large bags and prohibited items for a small fee.
Respect the animals: do not feed or disturb the animals and follow the zoo's rules for their welfare and your safety.
Carry water: stay hydrated, especially in the warmer months and on the walking trail.
Start early: the animals are most active in the morning and the grounds are cooler and quieter then, so an early arrival gives the best experience.
Plan for the little ones: bring hats, sunscreen and water for children and consider a battery vehicle so small legs do not tire on the long trail.
Following these simple guidelines makes the visit easier and more enjoyable for everyone and, importantly, better for the animals and their welfare.
Why visit the National Zoological Park?
The Delhi Zoo offers a rare combination in the heart of a busy city: wildlife, greenery, open space and a touch of history, all in one place and all at a very affordable price. It is a wonderful, relaxed day out, especially for families with children, who love seeing the tigers, lions, rhinos and birds up close and it gives everyone a chance to slow down and enjoy the outdoors.
For visitors, it is a green, restful contrast to Delhi's monuments and markets and its Mughal structures give it a unique character found in few other zoos in the world. Set right beside Purana Qila and close to other central Delhi sights, it is easy to include in a day of sightseeing and it is one of the capital's best options for a family-friendly, outdoor day, well worth a few hours whether or not you are travelling with children.
How to reach the National Zoological Park
The zoo is on Mathura Road, beside Purana Qila, in central Delhi and it is easy to reach:
By metro: the nearest station is Supreme Court, formerly Pragati Maidan, on the Blue Line, about 2 km from the zoo, from where an auto-rickshaw or short ride takes you to the gate.
By road: autos, ride-hailing cabs and buses reach the zoo easily, given its central location on Mathura Road and there is parking near the entrance.
Combined with Purana Qila: as the zoo and the fort are next to each other, they are very easy to visit together.
Its central location makes it simple to include in a day of central Delhi sightseeing, especially alongside the neighbouring Purana Qila fort right next door.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit the Delhi Zoo is October to March, when the weather is pleasant for walking the grounds and the winter months are especially comfortable. Within the day, the morning, soon after opening, is best, when the animals are most active and the grounds are cooler and quieter.
Summers, from April to June, are hot, so visit early, carry water and consider the battery-operated vehicles rather than walking the full trail in the heat. The monsoon brings a lush green freshness to the grounds, pleasant between showers. Remember that the zoo is closed on Fridays and national holidays and that weekends and school holidays are much busier, so a weekday visit is calmest and most enjoyable, with shorter queues and quieter enclosures.
