What is Purana Qila?

Purana Qila, which means the Old Fort, is one of the most ancient and historically important forts in Delhi and one of its most evocative. Rising above Mathura Road near Pragati Maidan, its massive rubble-and-stone walls, grand gateways and monuments tell the story of many centuries of the city's history.

The present fort was built in the 16th century by the Mughal emperor Humayun and the Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri, but the site is far older, believed to be the very ground of Indraprastha, the legendary capital of the Pandavas from the epic Mahabharata, with archaeological finds pointing to habitation stretching back thousands of years. Its walls run for nearly two kilometres, enclosing gardens, monuments and centuries of history.

An imposing, atmospheric and surprisingly peaceful place, dotted with historic buildings and surrounded by lawns and a lake, it is one of Delhi's great heritage sights and a rewarding stop for anyone interested in the city's deep past. Yet it is far less crowded than the Red Fort or the Qutub Minar, so it offers the rare pleasure of exploring a great Delhi monument at your own unhurried pace, with room to breathe and imagine its long story.

The history and legend of Purana Qila

Purana Qila has one of the longest and most fascinating histories of any site in Delhi, spanning legend and recorded history alike. By tradition, it stands on the site of Indraprastha, the magnificent capital of the Pandavas described in the Mahabharata and excavations within the fort have uncovered layers of habitation going back many centuries, including some of the oldest evidence of continuous settlement anywhere in Delhi, a remarkable depth of history beneath a single site.

The fort as we see it today belongs to the 16th century. The Mughal emperor Humayun began building a new city here, called Dinpanah, meaning "refuge of the faithful," in the 1530s. Soon after, the Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun, took Delhi and built and strengthened the fort as part of his city of Shergarh, adding some of its finest structures during his short but influential reign. When Humayun eventually regained his throne years later, he returned to the fort, only to meet his end here in 1556. This layered history, of the Pandavas of legend, of Humayun and of Sher Shah Suri, makes Purana Qila a place where myth and history meet and gives it a special, almost timeless place among the monuments of Delhi.

The monuments of Purana Qila

Within the fort's mighty walls stand several beautiful and historic structures:

• The grand gateways: the fort has three imposing gates, the Bara Darwaza or Great Gate, on the west, which is the main entrance, along with the Humayun Darwaza to the south and the Talaqi Darwaza or Forbidden Gate, to the north, all massive, double-storeyed and beautifully built in red sandstone and stone.

• The Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque: a jewel of a mosque built by Sher Shah Suri in 1541, one of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic architecture of its age, with five elegant arched openings, beautifully carved decoration and coloured stone inlay, a highlight of any visit.

• The Sher Mandal: an elegant octagonal red-sandstone tower built by Sher Shah Suri and used by Humayun as a library and observatory; it was here, in 1556, that Humayun, hurrying down its steep stairs at the call to prayer, fell and died, a poignant and famous moment in Mughal history.

• The baoli: a historic stepwell within the fort walls, part of the site's old water system, descending in steps to the water.

• The archaeological excavations and museum: ongoing excavations and a small museum display finds from the site, from painted pottery to sculptures, tracing its habitation back through the ages to ancient times.

Together, these monuments make Purana Qila an open-air museum of Delhi's history, from the age of legend and the epics right through to the Mughals, all within a single set of walls. Few places in the city pack so many centuries into such a compact and walkable site, which is a large part of what makes it so rewarding.

Purana Qila timings and entry fee

The fort keeps simple daily hours and the entry fee is modest.

The fort is open every day of the week from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entry is 30 rupees for Indian visitors and 300 rupees for foreign tourists, with no charge for a still camera and a small fee for a video camera, so you can photograph the monuments freely. Fees and timings can change, so reconfirm before a special visit and note that any evening sound-and-light show, if it is running, has separate timings and tickets from the daytime fort visit.

What to see and do at Purana Qila

There is a great deal to enjoy across the fort's grounds:

• Walk the walls and gates: admire the massive, weathered ramparts and the grand gateways and take in the sheer scale of the old fort as you enter through the towering Bara Darwaza, the great western gate.

• Visit the Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque: one of the highlights, a beautiful and historic mosque of exceptionally fine craftsmanship, worth pausing at to take in the detail.

• Climb to the Sher Mandal: see the elegant octagonal red-sandstone tower with its poignant history as the place of the emperor Humayun's sudden death and imagine him in his books and star charts.

• Explore the excavations and museum: discover the site's astonishing depth of history through the archaeological finds and the on-site museum.

• Enjoy the gardens and lake: the fort is surrounded by well-kept lawns and a lake, with pedal boating available outside the walls, a lovely, relaxing setting for a stroll or a picnic.

• Photography: the walls, gates, mosque and gardens make the fort wonderfully photogenic, especially in the soft, golden light of early morning and late afternoon.

It is easy to spend a couple of relaxed, rewarding hours here, wandering among the monuments and gardens and it makes a lovely, uncrowded change of pace from Delhi's busier, more famous sights, especially for those who like their history with a little peace and quiet.

How to reach Purana Qila

The fort is on Mathura Road, near Pragati Maidan, in central Delhi and it is easy to reach:

• By metro: the nearest station is Supreme Court, formerly Pragati Maidan, on the Blue Line, about 1.5 km from the fort, around a 19-minute walk or a quick auto-rickshaw or cab from outside the station to the main gate.

• By road: autos, ride-hailing cabs and buses reach the fort easily, given its central location on Mathura Road and there is parking near the entrance.

• On foot: from the metro, it is a walkable distance or a short auto ride if you prefer.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Purana Qila is October to March, when Delhi's weather is pleasant for exploring the fort and its grounds on foot. Within the day, the early morning, soon after the 7:00 AM opening and the late afternoon are lovely, with soft, golden light for the walls and monuments, cooler temperatures and far fewer people, ideal for both photography and a peaceful wander.

Summers, from April to June, are hot, so visit early in the morning or towards the 5:00 PM closing and carry plenty of water, making the most of the shade of the trees and the breeze off the lake. The monsoon brings a lush green freshness to the gardens and lawns, a lovely if occasionally wet time to visit. Whenever you go, allow a couple of hours to explore the monuments and gardens at a relaxed pace and arrive with enough time before closing.

What is near Purana Qila?

The fort's central location makes it easy to pair with several nearby attractions:

• Delhi Zoo: the National Zoological Park, one of India's largest zoos, lies right beside the fort, a natural and popular pairing, especially for families with children.
