The history of Lodhi Garden

In 1936, during British rule, the area was cleared and the village relocated, and the land was converted into a landscaped park laid out around the historic tombs, named Lady Willingdon Park after the wife of the then Viceroy, Lord Willingdon. After India's independence, it was renamed Lodhi Garden, after the dynasty whose monuments it holds. In 1968, the gardens were redesigned by the renowned American landscape architect Joseph Allen Stein, who also designed the nearby India International Centre, working with Garrett Eckbo, giving the park much of the beautiful, naturalistic layout of lawns, water and winding paths that it has today. • Bara Gumbad and Mosque: a massive domed structure, the "Big Dome," paired with a striking, intricately carved three-domed mosque decorated with fine plasterwork and calligraphy, together among the most beautiful and impressive architecture in the whole park.

• Shisha Gumbad: the "Glass Dome," so named for the glazed blue tiles that once decorated its exterior and glittered in the sun, a beautiful and distinctive tomb from the Lodhi period, standing close to the Bara Gumbad.

• Athpula Bridge: a scenic seven-arched stone bridge spanning a water body at the northern edge of the garden, built during the Mughal era under Emperor Akbar, and one of the garden's most photographed and romantic spots.
