What is Phoolon Wali Holi?
Phoolon Wali Holi, which simply means the Holi of flowers, is the beautiful and gentle flower Holi celebrated each year at the famous Shri Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan, the sacred town where Lord Krishna spent his childhood, in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh. It is widely considered one of the most enchanting, serene and much-loved of all the many Braj Holi celebrations.
Unlike the boisterous colour Holi or the famous stick-wielding Lathmar Holi of nearby Barsana and Nandgaon, at Phoolon Wali Holi there is no coloured powder or water at all. Instead, the temple priests shower great quantities of fresh rose, marigold and jasmine petals down from the upper galleries of the temple over the gathered devotees below, gently filling the air with soft, fragrant, drifting flowers. It is a joyful but wonderfully gentle, serene, devotional and uplifting celebration, a beautiful shower of flowers in loving honour of the beloved deity Banke Bihari and a truly lovely, moving and quite distinctive sight unlike anything else in the whole of the Braj Holi.
When is Phoolon Wali Holi 2027?
Phoolon Wali Holi 2027 in Vrindavan takes place on Saturday, 20 March 2027, at the Shri Banke Bihari temple, on the day of Rangbharni Ekadashi, an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar that marks the temple's Holi celebrations.
Importantly, the flower Holi is a brief ceremony: it happens during the morning darshan, roughly between 9 and 10 in the morning and the flower shower itself lasts only a short 20 to 30 minutes. So, unlike the all-day Lathmar celebrations, timing your visit precisely is absolutely everything here. The temple timings can occasionally shift slightly based on the local Hindu lunar calendar, so it is always wise to reconfirm the temple's official timings closer to the date, as our Holi 2027 in Mathura and Vrindavan guide sets out the full season's schedule.
Where is Phoolon Wali Holi held?
Phoolon Wali Holi is held at the famous Shri Banke Bihari temple, set in the narrow, winding lanes of the old town of Vrindavan, by far the most beloved and visited of all Vrindavan's thousands of temples, dedicated to Lord Krishna in his form as Banke Bihari. The temple is the true devotional heart of Vrindavan and the great focus of the town's Holi.
An important thing to know before you go is that the temple itself is quite small and compact, set deep in the tight, winding, crowded lanes of the old town of Vrindavan and the crowds during Phoolon Wali Holi are genuinely extreme, as huge numbers of devotees pour in from all over for the brief morning flower shower. This combination of a small space and enormous crowds makes arriving very early absolutely essential to secure a safe spot inside the temple, as described below.
The timing and what happens on the day
Phoolon Wali Holi is a short, beautiful and much-anticipated ceremony, so knowing the timing matters:
The morning darshan: the flower Holi takes place during the special morning darshan at the Banke Bihari temple, roughly between 9 and 10 in the morning, so it is very much an early event.
The flower shower: from the upper galleries of the temple, the priests shower great handfuls of fresh rose, marigold and jasmine petals down over the devotees gathered in the courtyard below, filling the air with drifting flowers.
A brief window: the flower shower itself lasts only a short 20 to 30 minutes, so it is a brief, intense and precious moment, not an all-day event, which makes being there on time essential.
Free entry: entry to the temple and the celebration is completely free and there are no VIP passes or special tickets available at all, so every visitor joins the same single, devoted crowd.
Because the whole ceremony is so short and happens early in the morning in a compact, very crowded temple, arriving well before 9 in the morning is genuinely essential if you are to find a safe spot inside and actually see the beautiful flower shower when it comes.
Phoolon Wali Holi and the Braj Holi season
Phoolon Wali Holi is one of the many wonderful celebrations of the Braj Holi season, the most famous Holi in India, which unfolds over about a week across the towns of Braj:
Laddu Holi at Barsana: the sweet opening, as our Laddu Holi 2027 in Barsana from Jaipur guide describes.
Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon: the famous stick-and-shield tradition, as our Lathmar Holi 2027 in Barsana from Jaipur guide describes.
Phoolon Wali Holi at Vrindavan: the gentle and beautiful flower Holi at the Banke Bihari temple, on 20 March 2027.
The wider Braj Holi: the celebrations at Mathura, Gokul and beyond, up to the main Holi.
For travellers and devotees, experiencing the Braj Holi, including the lovely Phoolon Wali Holi, is a true bucket-list experience, unlike Holi anywhere else in the world.
How to reach Vrindavan from Jaipur
Vrindavan lies in the Braj region, across the border in Uttar Pradesh, about 210 km from Jaipur, roughly 4.5 hours by road, close to Mathura:
By road via Bharatpur: the usual and most direct route runs from Jaipur east towards Bharatpur, in eastern Rajasthan and then across the state border into Braj to Mathura and on to Vrindavan. During the Holi season the roads are very busy and often congested, so set out early and allow generous extra time.
Via Mathura: Vrindavan is only about 15 km from Mathura, the main town of Braj, so you can conveniently base yourself in either town and reach the Banke Bihari temple easily on the morning of the flower Holi.
By train: a train from Jaipur to Mathura, the nearest major railhead to Braj, followed by a short road transfer across to Vrindavan, is another good, restful and economical way to reach the area if you would prefer not to drive the whole way.
Because of the distance from Jaipur and the extreme crowds and above all the brief, early-morning timing of the flower Holi, it is genuinely essential to travel over and be based in Vrindavan or Mathura the night before, rather than trying to travel from Jaipur on the day itself, as you would simply not arrive in time for the morning ceremony.
How to plan your Phoolon Wali Holi trip from Jaipur
For such a brief, early and crowded ceremony, after a journey from Jaipur, careful planning is everything:
Stay in Vrindavan or Mathura: base yourself there the night before, as the flower Holi is in the morning and you cannot travel from Jaipur on the day in time.
Book months ahead: rooms in Vrindavan and Mathura fill up very early for the Holi season, so reserve well in advance, ideally several months ahead.
Arrive very early: get to the compact Banke Bihari temple well before 9 in the morning to secure a safe spot inside before the extreme crowds.
Reconfirm the timing: as the timings can shift slightly with the lunar calendar, verify the temple's official timings closer to the date.
Go with everything arranged: the travel, timings, crowds and logistics are far easier with an organised trip, as our Golden Triangle with Mathura and Vrindavan guide shows how Braj fits a wider trip.

Remember the flower shower is brief, only 20 to 30 minutes, during the morning darshan.

What to expect
Phoolon Wali Holi is one of the most beautiful, serene and uplifting festival moments in all of India. In the compact, ancient and atmospheric Banke Bihari temple, packed tight with devoted, joyful crowds, the priests shower down great handfuls of fresh rose, marigold and jasmine petals from the upper galleries and the air fills with soft, fragrant flowers drifting gently down over the swaying gathering, to rising cries of devotion and joy. It is a gentle, serene yet utterly ecstatic and moving celebration, quite different from the boisterous colour and the playful sticks of the other Braj Holi festivities.
It is, however, extremely crowded and very brief, in a tight and compact temple space, so it is wise to come well prepared for the press of the crowd, to arrive very early indeed and then to simply treasure the short, magical flower shower when at last it comes. For those who love festivals, devotion and beauty and who plan their trip carefully and arrive in good time, Phoolon Wali Holi is one of the most memorable, serene and moving festival experiences that India has to offer and very well worth the journey over from Jaipur.
