Taj Mahal Entry Gates Guide

Quick Answer

The Taj Mahal has three entry gates: East, West and South. All lead to the same complex on one ticket. The East Gate is best for a sunrise visit and has the main tourist facilities, the West Gate is the busiest and nearest the hotels and the South Gate in Taj Ganj is mainly pedestrian. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, arranges Agra tours.

Choosing the right entry gate is one of the small decisions that can make a big difference to your visit to the Taj Mahal, affecting your queue, your parking and even your sunrise. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages explains the three gates, which one to use and when, how to reach each and the ticketing and security around them, so you enter smoothly and start your visit right, whether on your own or as part of a Golden Triangle tour.

I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years guiding travellers across the region for Experience My India I have taken visitors through all three gates many times and knowing which to choose, especially at sunrise, genuinely improves the experience. Here is what to know.

East Gate

Sunrise visits; tourist facilities

Near Shilpgram and the main eco-parking; recommended for dawn

Mainly an exit or pedestrian gate; entry use can vary, reconfirm

How many gates does the Taj Mahal have?

The Taj Mahal has three entry gates, set to the east, west and south of the complex, known simply as the East Gate, the West Gate and the South Gate. All three lead into the same great forecourt and then to the main monument and a single entry ticket is valid at whichever gate you use, so you do not buy a different ticket for a particular gate.

What differs is the location of each gate, the facilities around it, the typical crowd levels and how convenient each is for where you are staying and what you want to do. Getting this choice right, particularly for a sunrise visit, can mean a shorter queue and a smoother start, which is why it is worth a little planning. The gates are also the point where the Taj's strict security and vehicle rules apply, so understanding them helps you arrive prepared.

The East Gate

The East Gate, on Taj East Gate Road, is the one we most often recommend, especially for a sunrise visit. It sits near the Shilpgram complex and the main eco-tourism parking area and it tends to have better tourist facilities and, often, slightly shorter queues than the busy West Gate.

For a dawn visit, the East Gate is ideal, as it is geared towards early tourist entry and it is the natural choice if you want that soft sunrise light on the marble, which our Sunrise Taj Mahal tour is built around. The East Gate is also the side nearest the Taj Nature Walk and the general area from which night viewing is organised, making it a hub of Taj activity. From the parking, you cover the last stretch to the gate on foot or by a short electric-vehicle ride, as petrol and diesel vehicles are kept away from the monument.

The West Gate

The West Gate, sometimes associated with the Saheli Burj area, is the busiest of the three and is the most convenient for visitors staying in the Fatehabad Road hotel district. It has ticketing facilities and is the main gate for a large share of visitors, which is exactly why it tends to have the longest queues, particularly later in the morning.

If you are staying near Fatehabad Road, the West Gate is the closest and most logical choice and it is perfectly good for a daytime visit. Just be prepared for bigger crowds and longer lines here than at the East Gate and aim to arrive early and, ideally, with your ticket already booked online to skip part of the queue. As at the East Gate, you approach the final stretch on foot or by electric vehicle from the parking and drop-off points, not by car right up to the gate.

The South Gate

The South Gate lies in the heart of the old Taj Ganj area, among its lanes, rooftop cafes and guesthouses and it is primarily a pedestrian gate. Historically it has often functioned more as an exit than an entrance and its use for entry has varied over time, so it is the one gate whose status you should reconfirm locally before relying on it.

For travellers staying in the atmospheric Taj Ganj area right by the monument, the South Gate is the most convenient when it is open for entry and it gives a lovely walk through the old quarter to reach the Taj. Because its entry arrangements can change, however, we suggest confirming on the day whether it is operating for entry and having the East or West Gate as your backup. It remains a commonly used exit, delivering you back into the characterful lanes of Taj Ganj after your visit.

Which gate should you use?

The best gate depends on your priorities and where you are staying. Here is a simple way to decide.

Your situation

Best gate

You want a sunrise visit

East Gate

You are staying on Fatehabad Road

West Gate

You are staying in Taj Ganj

South Gate (if open for entry) or East

You want the best tourist facilities

East Gate

You want to avoid the biggest crowds

East Gate over West

In short, the East Gate is the all-round recommendation for most visitors and especially for a sunrise trip, thanks to its facilities and generally lighter queues. Choose the West Gate if you are staying near Fatehabad Road and visiting in the day and consider the South Gate only if you are in Taj Ganj and have confirmed it is open for entry. Whichever you choose, the same ticket works and all three bring you to the same unforgettable first view of the Taj.

Tickets and security at the gates

A single Taj Mahal entry ticket is valid at any of the gates and booking online in advance is strongly recommended, as it lets you skip part of the queue, which matters most at the busy West Gate. There are separate entry lines for Indian and foreign visitors and foreign-ticket holders generally get a few extras included. Because ticketing and any surcharges are set by the authorities and change from time to time, check the current details on the official portal before you go and note that the monument is closed on Fridays.

Security at every gate is strict. Large bags, tripods, food, drones and many other items are prohibited and you should carry only your essentials, a phone or camera and a water bottle, to pass through quickly. No petrol or diesel vehicles are allowed in the zone immediately around the Taj, so from the parking areas you walk or take an official electric vehicle to the gate. For the practicalities of reaching Agra and getting around, our Agra Metro guide and Noida to Agra distance guide help you plan.

How to reach the gates

All three gates are within the Taj Ganj and Taj East Gate area in the south-east of Agra and are reached by taxi, auto-rickshaw or electric vehicle, with the final approach always on foot or by e-cart.

Gate

Approach

East Gate

Via Taj East Gate Road and the Shilpgram eco-parking

West Gate

Via the Fatehabad Road side and the western parking

South Gate

On foot through the Taj Ganj lanes

Because of the no-vehicle zone around the monument, your taxi or auto-rickshaw will drop you at the designated parking or drop-off point for your chosen gate, from where you continue by electric cart or on foot. A private car with a driver makes this simple, as the driver knows exactly where to drop you for the East or West Gate and where to wait. Our wider travel guides cover more on planning your Agra logistics.

What to combine with your visit

However you enter, the Taj is the centrepiece of a day that Agra fills out richly. The mighty Agra Fort, with our Agra Fort tickets and timings guide to help, is the classic pairing and the riverside Mehtab Bagh gives the famous sunset view of the Taj from across the Yamuna.

A little further out lie the exquisite Itmad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj and the red-sandstone Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri; the full range is in our Agra attractions guide. If you are extending into the Braj region, our Agra to Vrindavan distance guide covers that onward journey. With an early entry through the right gate and a well-planned day, you will see the best of Agra comfortably.

Tips for choosing and using the gates

  • For a sunrise visit, use the East Gate, which is geared to early entry and has the best facilities.

  • If you are staying on Fatehabad Road, the West Gate is closest, but expect the biggest crowds there.

  • Only rely on the South Gate for entry if you are in Taj Ganj and have confirmed it is open that day.

  • Book your ticket online in advance to skip part of the queue, especially at the West Gate.

  • Remember the same ticket works at any gate and the Taj is closed on Fridays.

  • Travel light: large bags, tripods, food and drones are banned, so carry only the essentials.

  • Expect to walk or take an electric cart for the final stretch, as cars cannot reach the gates.

What to expect

Understanding the Taj Mahal's three gates takes the stress out of arrival. You can expect the East Gate to be your best all-round choice, especially for sunrise, with the main facilities and generally lighter queues; the West Gate to be the busiest but most convenient for Fatehabad Road hotels; and the South Gate to be a mainly pedestrian route from Taj Ganj whose entry use you should reconfirm. All three use the same ticket and bring you to the same breathtaking first sight of the monument.

Arrive early, book online, travel light through the strict security and be ready to cover the last stretch by foot or electric cart and your entry will be smooth. With the right gate chosen for your plans and your hotel, you will spend less time in queues and more time enjoying the world's most beautiful building.
