Quick Answer
Taj Mahal night viewing is allowed only on five nights a month around the full moon, from 8:30 PM to 12:30 AM, for a capped 400 visitors in batches of 50, with a 30-minute slot each. Tickets are bought a day in advance from the ASI office and it is closed on Fridays and during Ramadan. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, arranges Agra tours.
Seeing the Taj Mahal glow under a full moon is one of the most magical experiences in India, but it is also one of the most tightly regulated, so it takes careful planning. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages lays out the complete picture, the five-night lunar window, the batch timings and caps, the ticket prices and booking process, the strict ground rules and the best months to go, so you know exactly what to expect from a moonlit visit to the Taj Mahal, whether on its own or as part of a Golden Triangle tour.
I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years guiding travellers across the region for Experience My India I have helped many plan this special experience and the single most important thing to know is that the rules are non-negotiable and the planning has to be done in advance. Here is everything you need.
Taj Mahal night viewing at a glance

Your slot | 30 minutes inside the viewing area |
Closed | Fridays and during the month of Ramadan |

View from | The red-sandstone platform near the entrance gates (not the mausoleum) |
The five-night lunar window
Night viewing of the Taj Mahal is not available every day. It is strictly limited to just five nights each month, centred on the lunar cycle: the night of the full moon itself, the two nights before it and the two nights after it. On these nights the white marble takes on the soft silver glow of the moon, which is the whole point of the experience.
There are two mandatory exceptions that can cancel these nights and they are absolute:
Fridays: The Taj Mahal is completely closed to the general public every Friday, including for daytime visits. If any of the five full-moon nights falls on a Friday, night viewing for that date is cancelled entirely.
Ramadan: Night viewing is suspended completely during the holy month of Ramadan.
Night | Status |
Full moon night | Open (unless Friday or during Ramadan) |
Two nights before full moon | Open (unless Friday or during Ramadan) |
Two nights after full moon | Open (unless Friday or during Ramadan) |
Any of these falling on a Friday | Cancelled |
Any night during Ramadan | Suspended |
Because of this, you must check the lunar calendar for your travel dates well ahead and confirm that none of your chosen nights clash with a Friday or with Ramadan. This is the first and most important step in planning a night visit.
Batch timings and strict caps
To keep the experience peaceful and to protect the monument, entry is strictly capped at a maximum of 400 visitors per night. Night viewing runs from 8:30 PM to 12:30 AM and the visitors are split into eight batches of fifty people each.
Detail | Information |
Total capacity | 400 visitors per night |
Running time | 8:30 PM to 12:30 AM |
Batches | 8 batches of 50 people |
Time per batch | Exactly 30 minutes inside |
Your ticket grants you exactly thirty minutes inside the viewing area and this limit is strictly enforced: security personnel move each batch out as the next one arrives. This means the experience is brief and tightly managed, so it pays to go in knowing what to expect and ready to make the most of your half hour under the moon.
Ticket prices and how to book
Night viewing tickets are entirely separate from regular day-entry tickets and cannot be reused for a daytime visit. The prices below were correct at the time of writing and should be reconfirmed, as ASI fees are revised from time to time.
Category | Ticket price (at the time of writing) |
Indian adults | ₹510 per person |
Foreigners and NRIs | ₹750 per person |
Children (ages 3 to 15) | ₹500 per person |
Infants (under 3) | Free |
The booking process is unusual and catches many visitors out. Unlike daytime tickets, you generally cannot buy these online at the last minute. You must purchase them 24 hours, that is one day, in advance, in person from the official Archaeological Survey of India office at 22 Mall Road, Agra. Tickets are sold there between 10 AM and 6 PM on the day before the viewing and you must present a valid government-issued photo ID or a passport and visa copy for foreign nationals, at the time of booking. Crucially, tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable: if bad weather or thick winter fog blocks the moon, the ASI does not offer refunds or alternate dates.
Ground rules and what to expect
A night visit is structurally very different from a daytime tour and it is important to set your expectations correctly. The most significant point is that you do not go inside the monument itself.
No access to the mausoleum: You are not allowed inside the white marble structure or onto the main plinth at night. You view the monument from a distance, from the red-sandstone platform near the main entrance gates.
Reporting point: You must report to the Shilpgram complex, near the Eastern Gate of the Taj Mahal, 30 minutes before your batch time, for mandatory security checks and ID verification. From Shilpgram you are shuttled to the gate by an official electric cart.
Banned items: The security sweep is intense. Mobile phones, video cameras, backpacks, food and tobacco are all strictly prohibited inside the complex during night slots.
What is allowed: You may bring only a handheld still camera, without flash and a water bottle. Everything else must be left in your vehicle or in the complimentary luggage lockers at Shilpgram.
In other words, you should come prepared to leave your phone behind and simply absorb the view with your own eyes, which, many visitors find, is no bad thing. The thirty minutes gazing at the moonlit marble, free of screens, is the heart of the experience.
The best time for Taj Mahal night viewing
The single most important seasonal tip is to avoid the depths of winter. Late December and January bring incredibly thick fog to Agra at night and there is a very high chance you will see only a wall of white mist rather than the monument, with no refund if that happens. The clearest night skies and the best odds of a glorious moonlit view, come in September, October, November and March.
Since the whole experience depends on actually seeing the moonlit Taj, choosing a clear-sky month is as important as getting the lunar dates right. Plan for the shoulder months around the cool season rather than its foggy heart, line up a full-moon window that avoids Fridays and Ramadan and you give yourself the best possible chance of the magical view you came for. Our wider travel guides can help you plan the season around it.
The Friday alternative: Mehtab Bagh
If your heart is set on a moonlit Taj but your dates clash with a Friday closure or you simply miss the limited night-viewing tickets, there is a lovely alternative: cross the Yamuna to Mehtab Bagh, the Moonlight Garden, on the far bank directly opposite the Taj.
The view of the monument from across the river is beautiful, the garden stays open from sunset until around midnight and tickets are cheaper, roughly ₹200 to ₹500 at the time of writing, without the strict 30-minute batch constraints of official night viewing. While it is a different experience, viewing from a distance across the water rather than from the monument's own grounds, Mehtab Bagh offers a serene and far less regulated way to enjoy the Taj after dark and it is well worth knowing about as a backup or a complement to the main night-viewing slot.
Tips for Taj Mahal night viewing
Check the lunar calendar early and confirm your nights avoid both Fridays and Ramadan.
Book in person at the ASI office, 22 Mall Road, a day ahead, between 10 AM and 6 PM, with photo ID.
Avoid late December and January, when thick fog often hides the monument; aim for September to November or March.
Expect to view from the red-sandstone platform near the gates, not from inside the mausoleum.
Report to Shilpgram 30 minutes before your batch for security checks and the electric-cart shuttle.
Leave your phone, backpack and food behind; only a flashless handheld camera and a water bottle are allowed.
For low-light photos, open the aperture wide and raise the ISO, as flash and tripods are not permitted.
Pairing it with your daytime Agra plan
Because a night view is only thirty distant minutes and does not include the mausoleum, it works best as the crown on a full day of Agra sightseeing and the overnight stay it requires gives you plenty of time for the city's monuments. A classic plan is a dawn visit to the Taj, the day at the great sights and the moonlit view to finish.
During the day you can explore the mighty Agra Fort, with our Agra Fort tickets and timings guide to help, the exquisite riverside tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj and, a little outside the city, the red-sandstone Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri; the full range is in our Agra attractions guide. For getting there and around, our Agra Metro guide and Noida to Agra distance guide set out the practicalities and if you are extending into the Braj region, our Agra to Vrindavan distance guide covers that onward journey.
What to expect
A Taj Mahal night viewing is a brief but unforgettable experience, thirty minutes gazing at the world's most beautiful monument glowing under the full moon, from the red-sandstone platform near its gates. You can expect tight regulation at every step, a capped crowd, a fixed batch, an intense security sweep at Shilpgram and no phone in your hand, but also a rare, screen-free moment of pure wonder that most visitors to the Taj never get to enjoy.
It is not a substitute for a daytime visit, since you cannot enter the mausoleum or walk the gardens at night, but as a complement it is magical. With the lunar dates and a clear-sky month chosen carefully, the tickets booked a day ahead and your expectations set for a distant, moonlit view, a night at the Taj is one of the most romantic experiences India has to offer and Mehtab Bagh stands ready as a beautiful alternative if the dates do not align.
