When is the best time to visit Rajasthan?

The best time to visit Rajasthan is the cool, dry winter season, which runs broadly from October to March. During these months the fierce heat of the Rajasthan summer has passed, the days are pleasant and comfortable and the nights are cool and crisp, making it the ideal time to explore the forts, palaces, deserts and cities of the state in comfort. This is the peak tourist season and with good reason: the weather is simply at its most welcoming for sightseeing, for desert safaris and for enjoying the great outdoor spectacles of Rajasthan.

Within this long cool season, the heart of the peak, from about November to February, is the most popular and the most pleasant, offering the most comfortable conditions for travel across the whole state. The shoulder months of October and March are also lovely, warmer than the deep winter but still far more comfortable than the summer and often a little quieter and better value than the very peak. If your priority is comfortable sightseeing weather, you cannot go wrong with the October to March window and this is the time most travellers choose to see Rajasthan.

The pattern is much the same as for the wider region, as our best time to visit North India guide covers the seasons across the north, but Rajasthan, with its deserts, has its own particular rhythm and the differences are worth understanding before you plan.

Rajasthan in winter (October to March): the best time

Winter is, without question, the best and most popular time to visit Rajasthan. The weather during these months is at its finest for travel, with pleasant, sunny days that are perfect for sightseeing and cool, pleasant evenings. The oppressive heat of the summer is long gone and the whole state becomes a joy to explore, from the painted cities to the golden sands of the Thar Desert.

This is the season to do everything Rajasthan is famous for. It is the ideal time for desert safaris and camel rides in the great deserts around Jaisalmer and Bikaner, which are simply too hot to enjoy in summer. It is the perfect time to explore the magnificent forts and palaces, climbing the ramparts and wandering the courtyards in comfort, as our best forts in Rajasthan guide covers the great forts of the state. And it is the loveliest time to enjoy the lake city of Udaipur, with its romantic palaces and shimmering waters, as our best lakes of Udaipur guide covers that beautiful city.

Winter is also the great festival season in Rajasthan, which adds enormously to the appeal of visiting at this time. The famous Pushkar Camel Fair takes place in the late autumn, around the full moon of Kartik, as our Pushkar Camel Fair guide covers that extraordinary gathering of camels, traders and pilgrims. Many other cultural events and festivals fall in the cool season too, filling the calendar with colour.

The one thing to bear in mind about winter is that it is the peak season, so the popular destinations are busier and accommodation is in higher demand, which means it is well worth booking ahead, especially for the deep peak around the festive period and the new year. The nights can also turn genuinely cool, particularly in the desert, so it is wise to pack some warm clothing for the evenings even when the days are sunny and mild.

Rajasthan in summer (April to June): the hot season

Summer is the low season for most of Rajasthan and for good reason: this is when the state lives up to its reputation as a land of fierce desert heat. From April the temperatures climb steadily and through the peak of the summer the heat across much of the state and especially in the desert regions, can be intense and draining, making long days of sightseeing hard going. The desert cities in particular are at their most challenging in these months and the midday heat is best avoided.

This does not mean summer is impossible, but it does call for sensible planning. If you do travel in these months, it is best to start early in the day, rest through the fierce heat of the afternoon and venture out again in the cooler evening. It is essential to stay well hydrated, to carry good sun protection and to seek out shade and cool interiors in the hottest part of the day. The upside of the low season is that it is quieter, with fewer crowds at the great sights and it can offer better value on accommodation.

There is one important exception to the summer heat: Mount Abu, Rajasthan's only hill station. Set high in the Aravalli hills, Mount Abu stays far cooler and more pleasant than the plains and deserts below and it becomes a popular summer retreat for exactly this reason, a green and refreshing escape from the heat. If you are set on visiting Rajasthan in summer, the hills of Mount Abu are the natural choice, as our Udaipur to Mount Abu distance guide covers the journey up to the hill station. For most travellers, though, summer is a time to admire Rajasthan's palaces from a cool interior rather than to tramp the desert.

Rajasthan in monsoon (July to September): the green season

The monsoon brings the rains to Rajasthan in the months of roughly July to September and while Rajasthan is a largely dry state and sees far less rain than many parts of India, the monsoon still transforms the landscape in lovely ways. The arrival of the rains breaks the great heat of the summer, bringing cooler and more comfortable conditions and the parched countryside turns surprisingly green, the hills and the lakes at their most beautiful.

This is, in many ways, an underrated time to visit Rajasthan. The monsoon is a shoulder season, quieter than the winter peak and the fresh green landscapes and the fuller lakes can be a delight, nowhere more so than in Udaipur, the City of Lakes, which is at its most romantic when the monsoon has filled its waters and veiled the hills in cloud. The royal palaces reflected in brimming lakes make for an unforgettable sight, as our best palaces of Udaipur guide covers that city of palaces.

The monsoon is also the season of Teej and other festivals that welcome the rains and the greenery, which are celebrated with special joy by the women of Rajasthan. The rain in Rajasthan generally comes in bursts rather than as constant downpour, so sightseeing remains very possible and the cooler, fresher air is a welcome change from the summer. For travellers who do not mind the occasional shower and who enjoy green landscapes, quieter sights and better value, the monsoon is a rewarding and beautiful time to see the state.

Rajasthan month by month

To help you fine-tune your timing, here is a month-by-month view of the Rajasthan year.

  • October: the heat has broken and the cool season is beginning; pleasant days, a lovely and slightly quieter start to the peak season and a wonderful time to travel.

  • November: fully into the cool, comfortable peak season, with fine weather across the state; the great Pushkar Camel Fair usually falls around now, a highlight of the Rajasthan calendar.

  • December: cool, sunny days and genuinely chilly nights, especially in the desert; a very popular month, with the festive and new-year period at its busiest, so book well ahead.

  • January: the heart of winter, cool and crisp, with bright days ideal for sightseeing and cold nights; a peak month full of cultural events.

  • February: still lovely cool-season weather, pleasant and comfortable and a little less deeply cold; an excellent month to travel, with desert festivals in the calendar.

  • March: warming up as winter gives way to spring, but still pleasant early in the month; the spring festivals, including the beautiful Gangaur, usually fall around now, as our Gangaur Festival Jaipur guide covers that festival of the goddess Gauri.

  • April: the heat is building and the summer is beginning; still manageable early on, but the desert is warming fast.

  • May: high summer, hot to very hot across most of the state, especially the deserts; a time for early starts, cool interiors and the hill station of Mount Abu.

  • June: the peak of the summer heat before the rains arrive; the quietest low-season month on the plains, with Mount Abu the cool exception.

  • July: the monsoon arrives, breaking the heat and bringing cooler, greener conditions; a scenic, quieter shoulder season begins.

  • August: the green monsoon season, with the countryside and the lakes at their most lush; the Teej festival welcomes the rains and Udaipur is especially beautiful.

  • September: the monsoon easing towards its end, the landscape still green and fresh, leading into the glorious cool season to come; a lovely, quiet time to travel.

Best time for the different regions of Rajasthan

Rajasthan is a large and varied state and the ideal timing can shift a little depending on where you are going.

  • The desert cities (Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur): the winter, from about November to February, is by far the best time, when desert safaris, camel rides and nights under the stars in the Thar are at their most enjoyable. These regions are the harshest in summer, so the cool season is strongly preferred.

  • The lake city (Udaipur): Udaipur is lovely in the cool winter season, like the rest of the state, but it is also uniquely beautiful in the monsoon, when the lakes are full and the hills are green. Winter remains the safest choice for comfort, but the monsoon is a special and romantic time here.

  • The Pink City (Jaipur): the Golden Triangle city of Jaipur is best in the cool season, from October to March, perfect for exploring its forts, palaces and bazaars, as our Amber Fort ticket and timings guide covers the great fort above the city.

  • The hill station (Mount Abu): Uniquely, Mount Abu is at its most popular in the summer, when its cool hill climate offers an escape from the heat of the plains, though it is pleasant in the cool season too.

Understanding these regional differences helps you plan a trip that suits both the places you want to see and the time of year you can travel.

How to plan your Rajasthan trip

For most travellers, the advice is simple: aim for the cool season, from October to March and you will enjoy the best of Rajasthan in the most comfortable weather. Within that window, choose your exact timing around your priorities, whether that is a particular festival, such as the Pushkar Camel Fair or Gangaur, the quieter and gentler shoulder months of October and March or the deep winter peak with its full festival calendar.

Because the cool season is the peak season, booking ahead is important, especially for the popular desert camps, the lake-view hotels of Udaipur and the festive and new-year period, when demand is at its highest. Rajasthan combines wonderfully with the Golden Triangle and a classic trip takes in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur before going deeper into the state, as our one week North India itinerary guide maps out a route that can be extended into Rajasthan.

Tips for timing your visit to Rajasthan

  • Aim for the cool season, October to March, for the most comfortable sightseeing weather across the state.

  • Choose November to February for the deep peak or October and March for slightly quieter, gentler shoulder-season travel.

  • Pack warm clothing for the evenings in winter, as the nights, especially in the desert, can turn genuinely cold.

  • If you travel in summer, start early, rest through the afternoon heat, stay hydrated and consider the cool hill station of Mount Abu.

  • Consider the monsoon for green landscapes, quieter sights and better value, with Udaipur especially beautiful at this time.

  • Plan around the great festivals, such as the Pushkar Camel Fair in autumn and Gangaur in spring, if you want to see Rajasthan at its most colourful.

  • Book accommodation well in advance for the peak winter season and the festive period, when demand is high.

What to expect across the seasons

Rajasthan is a rewarding destination at any time of year for the traveller who plans around the season, but it is in the cool months from October to March that the state truly comes into its own, when the weather is kind and the whole land of forts, deserts, palaces and festivals can be enjoyed in comfort. The desert nights are crisp and starry, the fort ramparts are pleasant to climb, the lake cities sparkle and the festival calendar is full of colour.

Summer belongs to the hardy traveller and to the cool refuge of Mount Abu, while the monsoon offers a quieter, greener and surprisingly romantic alternative, especially in Udaipur. But for most visitors seeking the classic Rajasthan experience in the finest weather, the cool season is the answer and the clear best time to visit this magnificent state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions

The best time to visit Rajasthan is the cool, dry winter season, from October to March, when the days are pleasant and comfortable for sightseeing and the nights are cool. The peak months are November to February. This is the ideal time to explore the forts, palaces, deserts and lake cities of the state and it is also the great festival season.

The coldest period is the heart of winter, around December and January, when the days are cool and sunny and the nights, especially in the desert, can turn genuinely cold. The hottest months are the peak of summer, around May and June, when the heat across much of the state and especially the deserts, can be intense before the monsoon arrives.

Summer, from April to June, is the low season for most of Rajasthan because of the intense desert heat and it is generally not the most comfortable time for sightseeing on the plains. The main exception is Mount Abu, Rajasthan's hill station, which stays cool and becomes a popular summer retreat. If you travel in summer, start early, rest in the afternoon heat and stay well hydrated.

The monsoon, from July to September, is an underrated shoulder season. Rajasthan sees relatively little rain compared with much of India and the rains break the summer heat and turn the landscape green. It is quieter and often better value and Udaipur, the City of Lakes, is especially beautiful with full lakes and green hills. Expect occasional showers rather than constant rain.
