Chhadimar Holi 2027 in Gokul from Delhi

Chhadimar Holi, the gentle cane Holi of Gokul, falls on Friday, 19 March 2027. Celebrated around the historic Murlidhar Ghat and the town's ancient temples, roughly from noon to 4:00 PM, the women playfully strike the men with soft canes, a tender tribute to Lord Krishna's infancy in Gokul, along with herbal gulal, flower petals and the sweet makhan-mishri prasad. Gokul is about 180 km from Delhi, three to three and a half hours by road via the Yamuna Expressway.

Chhadimar Holi is the gentle, tender Holi of Gokul, the town where Lord Krishna is believed to have spent his infancy and in 2027 it falls on Friday, 19 March. Held around the historic Murlidhar Ghat and the ancient temples of Gokul, roughly from noon to 4:00 PM, it is a softer cousin of the famous stick Holi of Barsana: here the gopis strike the men only lightly with slender canes, because you cannot raise a heavy hand in the town of the baby Krishna. There is herbal gulal, showers of petals and the sweet makhan-mishri prasad that was the infant Krishna's favourite. Gokul lies about 180 km from Delhi, an easy half-day drive. This guide covers the date, the timing, the ritual, how to reach it and the wider Braj Holi calendar.

I was born in Delhi and in 11 years planning journeys across the region for Experience My India I have found the Gokul Holi one of the most heartfelt and least touristy of all the Braj celebrations. It rewards a little planning. Here is what to know. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans the trip.

What is Chhadimar Holi?

Chhadimar Holi, literally the cane-striking Holi, is Gokul's own version of the playful Holi found across Braj. Where Barsana's world-famous Lathmar Holi uses heavy wooden sticks, the women of Gokul use soft, flexible canes, called chhadis, to strike the men only gently. The reason is beautiful: Gokul is where Krishna is believed to have lived as a baby, so the play is kept tender out of love for the infant god. It is one of the gentlest and most devotional of the Braj Holis, full of affection rather than mock combat.

Chhadimar Holi 2027 date and timing

In 2027, Chhadimar Holi is celebrated on Friday, 19 March. The main play unfolds in the afternoon, roughly from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM, when the procession moves through the town and the cane play takes place around the ghats and temples. Because it follows the Hindu lunar calendar, the date shifts each year and is set by the local temples, usually falling in March a couple of days before the main Holi. It comes the day before the flower Holi at Vrindavan, so the two can be seen on consecutive days.

What happens at Chhadimar Holi

The celebration centres on the historic Murlidhar Ghat and the ancient temples of Gokul, such as Gokulnath and Nand Bhavan. As devotional singing and drumming build, the women take up their slender canes and playfully, gently strike the men, who accept it with good humour as part of the loving tradition. Herbal gulal is thrown, flower petals rain down and wet colours join in, so it is more colourful than Vrindavan's pure flower Holi. Devotees are given makhan-mishri, fresh butter and sugar candy, the treat the baby Krishna is said to have loved, as prasad. The mood is joyful, intimate and deeply rooted in the Krishna story.

How to reach Gokul from Delhi

Gokul lies about 15 km southeast of Mathura on the banks of the Yamuna and roughly 180 km from Delhi. By road it is a drive of three to three and a half hours, mostly on the Yamuna Expressway to Mathura and then a short hop to Gokul, which makes driving the easiest way to arrive in time for the afternoon play. By train, take a service to Mathura Junction, two to three hours from Delhi, then a taxi or auto for the last 30 to 40 minutes to Gokul. Our Delhi Agra Mathura map shows how the corridor connects. During Holi the Braj roads are very busy, so start early and allow extra time and expect to walk the final stretch to the ghats through the old lanes.

The wider Braj Holi 2027 calendar

Chhadimar Holi is one day in a week-long Braj Holi season, when each town celebrates in turn. Many visitors string several together and the flower Holi at Vrindavan the very next day is covered in our Phoolon Wali Holi 2027 Vrindavan from Delhi guide. Here is the full 2027 calendar.

Tips for attending Chhadimar Holi

A few things make the day easier. Reach Gokul before the afternoon play begins, as the town and the lanes to the ghats fill up and parking sits away from the old centre so you walk the last stretch. Wear old clothes you do not mind staining, since there are wet colours as well as gulal and protect your phone and camera in a waterproof pouch. Travel light, keep valuables secure in the crowd and go with a patient, respectful spirit, remembering this is a sacred tradition rather than a colour party. A car and a local guide who knows the Braj roads and closures make the trip far smoother.

Combining with Mathura, Vrindavan and Agra

Gokul sits at the heart of Braj, so it pairs perfectly with the region's other sights. Mathura, Krishna's birthplace and Vrindavan are close by and full of temples and ghats, covered in our places to visit in Mathura guide and Agra with the Taj Mahal is about 70 km on, easily added with our Agra places of interest guide. If you like planning around festivals, our Diwali 2026 in India guide covers another of India's great celebrations.

Where to stay and best time to go

Most visitors base themselves in Mathura or Vrindavan and travel out to Gokul for the day, as Gokul itself has limited accommodation. Rooms across Braj fill months ahead for Holi, so book well in advance, ideally by the end of 2026 for a March 2027 trip; our where to stay in Mathura guide helps you choose. March is pleasant, warm by day and cool in the mornings, so light cottons with a layer for the early start work well.

I booked the Gokul Chhadimar Holi 2026 tour with Experience My India, and the arrangements were excellent. Abhay ji helped us plan the route from Delhi, arranged a comfortable car and a good hotel, and guided us about the best time to reach Gokul before the celebrations began. Everything was well organised, from the journey to visiting Murlidhar Ghat. We were very happy with the service and could enjoy this beautiful Holi tradition without worrying about travel arrangements.

Our family booked a Braj Holi trip through Experience My India, especially to attend Chhadimar Holi in Gokul. Abhay ji explained the festival schedule clearly and planned our car journey so we could reach the main celebration area on time. The hotel arrangements were comfortable, and the driver knew the local roads and where we needed to walk through the crowded lanes. The entire trip felt smooth and thoughtfully planned. We returned with wonderful memories of Gokul's unique Holi celebration.
