Quick Answer
Agra's places of interest go far beyond the Taj Mahal. The city holds three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and nearby Fatehpur Sikri, alongside the Baby Taj at Itmad-ud-Daulah, the sunset gardens of Mehtab Bagh, Akbar's grand tomb at Sikandra, the Jama Masjid, the tiled Chini Ka Rauza and Ram Bagh, India's oldest Mughal garden. Most travellers need two to three days to see them well.
Agra is far more than the Taj Mahal. It is the only city in India with three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and around them lies a whole landscape of Mughal tombs, mosques, riverside gardens and living bazaars, along with wildlife and temples for those who want a break from the monuments. This guide runs through the city's places of interest, from the essential trio to the quieter gems, so you can build a visit that suits your time and taste.
I was born in Delhi, and in 11 years guiding the Agra leg of the Golden Triangle for Experience My India I have taken travellers to every one of these places, in every season. The famous three deserve their fame, but it is the lesser-known tombs and gardens that often stay with people. Here is the full picture.

The top places of interest in Agra
Taj Mahal
The reason most people come, and it lives up to it. Shah Jahan's marble mausoleum for his queen Mumtaz Mahal is at its most magical at sunrise, when the stone shifts from grey to pink to white. It is closed on Fridays, and our best time to visit Taj Mahal Agra guide explains exactly when to go.
Agra Fort
The vast red-sandstone citadel of the Mughals, a city within walls of marble palaces, courtyards and the tower where Shah Jahan was imprisoned with a view of the Taj. For its opening hours see our Agra Fort timings guide, and it sits about 5 km from the main station, a trip we cover in our Agra Cantt to Agra Fort distance guide.
Fatehpur Sikri
About 40 km west of the city, Fatehpur Sikri is the perfectly preserved red-sandstone capital that Akbar built and then abandoned within a couple of decades. Its palaces, courtyards and the great Buland Darwaza gateway make it the third of Agra's UNESCO sites and a rewarding half-day trip.
Itmad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj
This jewel-box tomb of Mirza Ghiyas Beg, built by his daughter Nur Jahan, is often called the draft for the Taj Mahal. Its inlaid marble and lattice screens are exquisite, and it is far quieter than the main monument, set in a classic charbagh garden on the east bank of the Yamuna.
Mehtab Bagh
The riverside garden directly across the Yamuna from the Taj, and the finest place to watch the sunset light the marble gold. It is calm, uncrowded and the best free viewpoint in Agra, perfect to end a day.
Akbar's Tomb, Sikandra
On the Delhi road at Sikandra, the great Emperor Akbar's tomb is a monument in its own right, a red-sandstone and marble mausoleum in sprawling gardens roamed by deer and monkeys. Uniquely it faces the rising sun rather than Mecca, a nod to Akbar's philosophy of religious tolerance, and his wife Mariam's tomb stands nearby.
Jama Masjid
Built by Shah Jahan in 1648 and facing Agra Fort, the Jama Masjid is a grand red-sandstone mosque with marble inlay and a vast courtyard. It sits beside the bustle of Kinari Bazaar, so it pairs naturally with a walk through the old city.
Chini Ka Rauza
A lesser-known Persian-style tomb from 1635, Chini Ka Rauza is famous for its glazed tilework in blues and greens, a completely different look from the marble and sandstone of the rest of Agra. It is a quiet stop for anyone who loves architecture.
Ram Bagh
Laid out by Babur around 1526, Ram Bagh, originally Aram Bagh, the Garden of Rest, is regarded as the oldest Mughal garden in India. Serene and underrated, it is a shady escape of terraces and water channels that once briefly held Babur's own remains.
Beyond the monuments
Wildlife SOS. Near Keetham Lake on the outskirts, this conservation centre cares for rescued elephants and sloth bears, a moving and family-friendly break from monument sightseeing. The neighbouring Sur Sarovar bird sanctuary is good for birdwatchers.
Mankameshwar Temple. One of Agra's most revered temples, an ancient shrine to Lord Shiva near Jama Masjid in the heart of the old city, busy with devotion and a glimpse of living Agra beyond the Mughal past.
Markets and crafts. Kinari Bazaar near Jama Masjid is a colourful maze of fabric, jewellery and leather, while the city's workshops are famous for marble inlay, the same pietra dura craft used on the Taj. Do not leave without trying petha, Agra's signature sweet.
If you have still more time, the intricate marble latticework of Soami Bagh at Dayal Bagh and the Sikh shrine of Guru ka Taal near Sikandra are both worth seeking out.
How many days do you need in Agra?
One full day covers the essentials, the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and one or two nearby sights, while two to three days let you add Fatehpur Sikri, the tombs and gardens and a market wander at a relaxed pace. If you are tight on time, our places to visit in Agra in one day guide sets out the perfect single-day itinerary.
Best time to visit and how to get around
The comfortable season is October to March, and an early start beats both the heat and the crowds at every site. The sights are spread across both banks of the Yamuna and out to Sikandra and Fatehpur Sikri, so a private car with a driver is the most efficient way to link them. If you are arriving from elsewhere, our Delhi Agra Mathura map shows how Agra connects to Delhi and the Braj towns, and our Agra to Jaipur road trip guide covers the onward leg to the Pink City.

โWe booked our Agra sightseeing with Experience My India, and the whole day was very well planned. Abhay Sharma helped us choose the right places beyond the Taj Mahal, including Agra Fort, Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh. Our driver was punctual and the guide explained the history in a very easy way. We especially enjoyed the quieter monuments because we would probably have missed them on our own. Very happy with the service.โ
