Agra to Jaipur Road Trip: Routes, Distance and Stops

In short, the Agra to Jaipur drive covers about 240 km and takes four and a half to five hours depending on the route you pick, and the quickest is the Bikaner-Agra Road at 239 km. But this is the one leg of the Golden Triangle where you should not simply chase the fastest time, because two of the region's best sights sit right on the road: Akbar's abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri, a short way out of Agra, and the extraordinary Chand Baori stepwell near Abhaneri, an easy detour before Jaipur. Build the drive around them and it becomes a highlight rather than a transfer.

It is my favourite leg of the whole circuit, precisely because the journey is as good as the destinations. Here are the routes and drive times, the stops worth making, and how to plan the day so nothing feels rushed.

Agra to Jaipur distance and routes

There are three sensible ways to drive it, and the differences are small in distance but real in character.

Which route to choose

For most travellers the Bikaner-Agra Road is the one to take. It is the fastest on paper at about 239 km and four and a half hours, and, more importantly, it is the classic route that passes both Fatehpur Sikri and the turn-off for Chand Baori, so you can string the two great stops together without doubling back. The newer Jaipur-Bandikui Expressway option is smooth and quick but bends the route, so you would detour to reach the stepwell. The older NH 21 is the slowest of the three. My advice is simple: unless you are in a genuine hurry, take the classic road, because on this particular leg the stops are the point.

The best stops on the Agra to Jaipur road trip

This drive is famous for what lies along it. Here are the stops worth building your day around, in the order you reach them leaving Agra.

Fatehpur Sikri

Only about 40 km out of Agra stands Fatehpur Sikri, the perfectly preserved red sandstone capital that Emperor Akbar built and then abandoned. The towering Buland Darwaza, the marble tomb of Salim Chishti and the carved palaces make it a genuine highlight, not a quick photo stop, so allow two to three hours. Chand Baori (Abhaneri)

Further along, near the village of Abhaneri and about 90 km before Jaipur, is Chand Baori, one of the largest and deepest stepwells in India: 3,500 perfectly geometric steps plunging thirteen storeys into the earth, built over a thousand years ago and used as a film location for The Dark Knight Rises. It takes under an hour, the adjacent Harshat Mata temple is worth a look, and it is open from sunrise to sunset. It is the single most surprising sight on the whole Golden Triangle, and almost no one who stops there regrets it.

Keoladeo, the Bharatpur bird sanctuary

If you love birds and have the time, Keoladeo National Park at Bharatpur, a UNESCO-listed wetland roughly an hour from Agra, is one of the finest bird sanctuaries in Asia, spectacular in winter when migratory flocks arrive. It needs two to three hours of its own and suits early risers, so treat it as a deliberate detour rather than a casual stop, and only if birds are your thing.

Other stops along the way

Depending on your interests and time, you can also break the drive at the Deeg Palace and its water gardens near Bharatpur, or, for pilgrims, the intense Hanuman temple of Mehandipur Balaji off the Dausa road. Most travellers, though, are well served by Fatehpur Sikri and Chand Baori alone, which together turn the transfer into a full and memorable day.

How to do the trip

A private car with a driver is the only sensible way to do this as a road trip, because the stops are strung along the highway and impossible to reach conveniently by public transport. Leave Agra by about 8:00 AM, take Fatehpur Sikri in the morning, drive on for the stepwell around the middle of the day, and roll into Jaipur in the evening, in time to settle in and eat. Reckon on four and a half to five hours of actual driving plus three to four hours at the stops, so it is a full day; start early and it never feels rushed. Carry water and snacks, since good roadside food is patchy between the towns.

By train or bus

You can also cover the leg by train, with a handful of services running between Agra and Jaipur in around four to five hours, or by state and private buses in a similar time, both cheaper than a car. But neither lets you stop at Fatehpur Sikri or Chand Baori, so if the road trip and its sights are the reason you are making the journey, a car is the clear choice. Trains and buses make more sense only if you simply need to get from one city to the other.

Best time to make the drive

Drive it between October and March, when the weather is pleasant and the stops are comfortable to explore. April to June is very hot, hard going for climbing around Fatehpur Sikri and Chand Baori in the open, and the monsoon from July to September brings some rain but greener scenery. Whatever the season, leave Agra early: mornings are cooler, the light is better for photographs, and you beat both the traffic and the tour buses at the sights.
