Taj Ganj (closest, mostly budget)

Taj Ganj is the warren of lanes right beside the East and South gates, the only place you can genuinely walk to the Taj in a few minutes. It is mostly budget and mid-range guesthouses and small hotels, some with rooftop cafes that look across to the dome. It suits backpackers and anyone who wants to be at the gate for sunrise on foot, but do not expect luxury here.

Taj East Gate Road (smart hotels, short hop)

A little back from the East Gate runs Taj East Gate Road, home to some of the best-placed star hotels, close enough for a quick drive or a longish walk to the monument. This is the sweet spot for travellers who want comfort without being far from the Taj.

Fatehabad Road (most of the big hotels)

Fatehabad Road, roughly two to three kilometres from the Taj, is where most of Agra's 4 and 5-star hotels are clustered, along with restaurants and shops. You are a short drive from the monument rather than walking distance, but you get the widest choice of quality hotels.
