Quick Answer
You can see the best of Agra in one day: start with the Taj Mahal at sunrise, spend the late morning at Agra Fort and use the afternoon for the Baby Taj and a sunset view from Mehtab Bagh. A true sunrise needs an overnight stay, since a day trip from Delhi arrives mid-morning.
In short, one full day is enough to see Agra's headline sights without rushing, as long as you start early. The ideal plan is the Taj Mahal at first light, Agra Fort in the late morning, lunch and then the quieter riverbank monuments, the Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh, with its famous sunset view of the Taj across the water. If you are coming as a day trip from Delhi you will arrive too late for a true sunrise, so the single best upgrade to an Agra day is to stay the night before.
I was born in Delhi and in 11 years running Agra days for Experience My India I have learned that the difference between a great Agra day and a rushed one is almost always the start time. Get to the Taj at opening and everything else falls into place. Here is the hour-by-hour plan I actually use, plus how to do it whether you are staying in Agra or coming down from Delhi for the day.

The hour-by-hour Agra day
Sunrise at the Taj Mahal
Be at the gate for opening, about half an hour before sunrise. This is the Taj at its most magical, the marble blushing pink then turning white as the sun rises and the crowds still thin. Give it a good two hours to take in the monument, the gardens and the inner chamber and pay the small extra charge to step inside the mausoleum. Check Taj Mahal timings and ticket price and book online to skip the queue and note that the Taj is closed on Fridays.
Agra Fort
After breakfast, head to Agra Fort, about 2.5 km away. This vast red sandstone fort is where the Mughal emperors ruled and where Shah Jahan was later imprisoned within sight of the Taj and it deserves an hour and a half to two hours. For the full story and the practical details, see Agra Fort history and timings.
Lunch and the Baby Taj
Break for lunch, then cross to the eastern bank of the Yamuna for Itmad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj, the exquisite marble tomb that came before the Taj and rehearsed its inlay work. It is quiet, close up and often nearly empty. If tombs are your thing, our guide to places to visit in Agra points you to a couple more nearby.
Sunset at Mehtab Bagh
End the day at Mehtab Bagh, the garden directly across the river from the Taj, aligned with its central axis. As the sun sets, the marble turns gold and then soft pink and you see the whole monument with space around it and almost no crowd. It is the perfect, unhurried close to an Agra day and one of the best free views in India.
Doing Agra in a day from Delhi
Many people do Agra as a day trip from the capital. It is completely doable: leave Delhi by about 6:30 AM and you reach Agra in around four hours, in time for the Taj and Agra Fort before driving back by night. The one honest limitation is that you cannot catch a true Taj sunrise this way, because you arrive mid-morning. Our Delhi to Agra distance guide covers the routes and drive and how to reach Taj Mahal explains the gates and the last stretch. If a dawn view matters to you, stay the night in Agra instead of rushing down and back.
What you must know for a one-day visit
A few things make or break an Agra day. Never plan it for a Friday, when the Taj Mahal is closed to tourists. Book your Taj ticket online in advance to skip the counter queue and remember that no petrol or diesel vehicle can approach the Taj, so you finish the last stretch on a battery bus or e-rickshaw. Hire only an official, identity-carrying guide, since the touts around the monuments are persistent. And start early, because in one day the difference between seeing everything calmly and racing the clock is simply your start time.
Best time and practical tips
Visit between October and March for comfortable weather and go at sunrise whatever the season, both for the light and to beat the coach crowds that build after nine. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water in the warmer months and keep some cash for tickets, snacks and the marble-inlay souvenirs Agra is known for. Move between the sights by car or a pre-arranged driver, since the monuments are spread across the city and the riverbanks.

Yes, comfortably. Allow about two hours for the Taj and an hour and a half to two for Agra Fort, which sits only 2.5 km away. That still leaves the afternoon for the riverbank tombs.
