What is Dauji Huranga?

Dauji Huranga is the concluding celebration of the Braj Holi, staged at the Dauji temple in Baldeo, the most important shrine of Lord Balarama in the region. Huranga is the name for the vigorous, high-spirited Holi played here between the men and women of the town, a tradition believed to go back centuries. Coming the day after the main Rangwali Holi, when the rest of India has finished, it gives Braj one last, spectacular day of colour and because it is off the usual tourist trail it keeps a raw, authentic energy that many find the most memorable of all.

Dauji Huranga 2027 date and timing

In 2027, Dauji Huranga is on Tuesday, 23 March, on Chaitra Krishna Dwitiya, exactly one day after the main Rangwali Holi of 22 March. The play begins around 12:00 noon and builds through the afternoon in the temple courtyard. Because it follows the Hindu lunar calendar, the date shifts each year, always landing the day after the main Holi. Arriving before noon lets you find a safe spot before the courtyard fills and the play turns wild.

The Huranga tradition: Kapda Faad Holi

The ritual is unlike any other Holi. In the temple courtyard, the women of Baldeo playfully tear the kurtas right off the men's backs, then soak the torn strips of cloth in natural coloured water made from saffron, indigo, turmeric and tesu flowers. The wet, dyed fabric is twisted into ropes and swung like whips to drench and drive the roaring crowd, while men shower the women with colour in return. It is loud, physical and utterly joyous, a mock battle of the sexes drawn from the Krishna legends and it leaves everyone soaked, dyed and grinning.

How to reach Baldeo from Delhi

Baldeo lies about 22 km east of Mathura and roughly 190 km from Delhi. By road it is a drive of three and a half to four hours, mostly on the Yamuna Expressway to Mathura and then a short hop east to Baldeo, which makes driving the easiest way to arrive by noon. By train, take a service to Mathura Junction, two to three hours from Delhi, then a taxi or auto for the last 40 minutes or so to Baldeo. Our Delhi Agra Mathura map shows how the corridor connects. Most visitors base in Mathura or Vrindavan and day-trip to Baldeo and during Holi week you should start early and expect to walk the final stretch to the temple.

The wider Braj Holi 2027 calendar

Dauji Huranga is the last act of a week-long Braj Holi season, when each town celebrates in turn. Many visitors string several together and the Gokul, Vrindavan and Mathura Holis are covered in our Chhadimar Holi 2027 Gokul from Delhi, Phoolon Wali Holi 2027 Vrindavan from Delhi and Mathura Holi 2027 from Delhi guides. Tips for attending Dauji Huranga

This is the wildest of the Braj Holis, so come prepared. Wear old clothes you are happy to lose, because your kurta may well be torn to shreds, soaked and dyed and bring a full change of clothes for afterwards. Keep phones, wallets and documents sealed in a waterproof pouch or, better still, leave them behind, as the courtyard is drenched and chaotic. Protect your eyes with sunglasses, wear closed shoes with a grip for the wet floor and stay near the edge if you would rather watch than join the fray. The temple courtyard gets extremely crowded and boisterous, so going with a knowledgeable local or guide who can secure a safe viewing spot makes a real difference.

Combining with Mathura, Vrindavan and Agra

Because it is the finale, Dauji Huranga pairs naturally with the days of Holi before it and the region's sights. Mathura and Vrindavan are close by, full of temples and ghats, covered in our places to visit in Mathura guide and Agra with the Taj Mahal is about 70 km on, a fine way to wind down after Holi, using our Agra places of interest guide.

Where to stay and best time to go

Baldeo itself has very little accommodation, so base yourself in Mathura or Vrindavan and travel out for the day. Rooms across Braj fill months ahead for Holi week, so book well in advance, ideally by the end of 2026 for a March 2027 trip; our where to stay in Mathura guide helps you choose. Since the Huranga is the day after the main Holi, staying through the 23rd lets you experience the whole Braj Holi arc from start to finish.
