How far is Delhi from Jaipur?

The distance from Delhi to Jaipur is about 280 to 310 km by road, depending on which route you take and the journey usually takes around 5 hours by car. It is one of the quickest and easiest trips from the capital, which is exactly why Jaipur is such a popular weekend getaway for Delhiites and the natural third stop on a Golden Triangle tour. The relatively short, straightforward journey means you can comfortably leave Delhi in the morning and be exploring the Pink City by the afternoon.

The two cities are very well connected by good, modern, well-maintained roads, as well as by frequent daily trains and short flights, so you can choose whichever way of travelling best suits your plans, your budget and your schedule. For most travellers and especially for those on a Golden Triangle trip taking in Agra as well, going by road is comfortably the most convenient and flexible option, as it lets you travel at your own pace and stop wherever you wish along the way.

Routes from Delhi to Jaipur

There are two main road routes between Delhi and Jaipur, both good and widely used and which one is best depends a little on where in each city you are starting and finishing and on whether you value speed or the stops along the way:

  • Via NH 48 (the classic highway): the traditional route runs along National Highway 48, the long-established Delhi to Jaipur highway, a distance of about 282 km. This is the classic road that generations of travellers have taken, passing out through Gurugram and on across the Rajasthan border, through towns such as Behror and Shahpura, before reaching Jaipur. It is a little shorter in distance and passes close to several of the well-known stops along the way.

  • Via the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (NE-4) and the Jaipur-Bandikui Expressway (NE4C): the newer route uses the modern, multi-lane Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and the Jaipur-Bandikui Expressway spur that connects it directly to the city, a distance of about 309 to 312 km. Although it is slightly longer in kilometres, this high-speed, access-controlled expressway route is generally the faster, smoother and more relaxing of the two, at around 5 hours, with fewer towns and junctions to slow you down.

Both routes are good, modern, well-made and well-signposted roads, suitable for all vehicles. The modern expressway route is generally the faster and more comfortable choice for most journeys, especially if you simply want to reach Jaipur as quickly and smoothly as possible, while the classic NH 48 passes closer to some of the well-known heritage stops along the way, which can be a very nice bonus if you happen to have a little extra time to spare on your journey.

How to travel from Delhi to Jaipur

You can travel from Delhi to Jaipur by road, by train, by bus or by a short flight and each has its own advantages depending on your budget, your schedule and whether you want a car at the other end. Here is how the main options compare:

  • By car or taxi: the most flexible and comfortable way, taking around 5 hours on the expressway route and letting you stop where you like along the way for meals, tea or sightseeing. This is by far the usual choice for a Golden Triangle trip, travelling with a comfortable private car and an experienced driver who knows the roads.

  • By train: many trains run between Delhi and Jaipur each and every day, taking around 4.5 to 5.5 hours, including fast and premium services. The train is a comfortable, economical, relaxing and scenic option if you do not need a car waiting at the other end and avoids any worry about the road traffic.

  • By bus: frequent buses, including comfortable air-conditioned Volvo coaches run by the Rajasthan and Delhi state transport services as well as several private operators, connect the two cities throughout the day, a reliable and budget-friendly choice for solo travellers and backpackers.

  • By air: there are short flights between Delhi and Jaipur, but as the flight itself is very brief and the airport check-in, security and city transfers at each end all take time, flying is rarely worth the trouble or expense for this particular short journey, unless it happens to connect to a longer onward flight.

For a Golden Triangle trip, which also takes in Agra, travelling by road with a private car and driver is by far the most practical and enjoyable way, giving you the freedom to stop, sightsee and travel on your own schedule.

How long does it take?

The time the journey takes depends on how you travel and which route you choose. By road, the Delhi to Jaipur journey takes around 5 hours on the faster expressway route and a little more by the classic NH 48, not counting any stops you choose to make along the way for food or sightseeing. By train, the fastest services take around 4.5 hours, with the other services taking a little longer depending on the number of halts. A flight is very short in the air, barely an hour, but the total door-to-door time, once you add the airport procedures, boarding and the city transfers at both ends, often ends up similar to or even longer than the comfortable train.

For planning a Golden Triangle trip, it is sensible to allow most of a morning or a relaxed half-day, for the Delhi to Jaipur leg by road, setting off reasonably early in the day so that you arrive in Jaipur with plenty of time to check in, settle into your hotel and begin your sightseeing in the Pink City at a comfortable, unhurried pace.

Stops along the way

One of the joys of the road journey is the chance to break it with a stop or two, especially on the classic NH 48 route:

  • Neemrana: the famous Neemrana Fort Palace, a magnificent fifteenth-century restored hilltop fort now run as a beautiful heritage hotel, is a popular stop roughly midway along the classic route, lovely for lunch, a short visit to wander its terraces or even an overnight break on a more leisurely trip.

  • Roadside dhabas and resorts: both routes are lined with good roadside dhabas, highway restaurants and resorts, which are perfect for a refreshing tea, a cold drink or a proper meal break to break up the drive.

If you are travelling with a private car and have a little time to spare, a stop at the Neemrana Fort Palace makes the journey all the more memorable, turning a simple transfer between the two cities into a small adventure and a taste of Rajasthan's royal heritage in itself. Your driver can easily build such a stop into the day.

What to see when you arrive in Jaipur

Jaipur, the Pink City, is one of India's most colourful, vibrant and rewarding destinations, full of grand forts ornate palaces and bustling bazaars and the capital of the royal state of Rajasthan. Among its many great highlights are the magnificent hilltop Amber Fort, the iconic Hawa Mahal or Palace of the Winds, the grand City Palace, the fascinating Jantar Mantar astronomical observatory, the hilltop Nahargarh and Jaigarh forts and the lively, colourful markets of the old walled city, famous for their jewellery, textiles and handicrafts.

Jaipur really deserves at least a full day or two to do it justice, so it is well worth planning a proper stay rather than just a flying visit. To plan your time in the Pink City, our things to do in Jaipur guide covers the whole city and its best sights, while our Amber Fort ticket and timings and Hawa Mahal Jaipur guide guides cover two of its most famous and iconic sights in full, with their tickets, timings and visitor tips.

Delhi, Jaipur and the Golden Triangle

The Delhi to Jaipur journey is one leg of the classic Golden Triangle, the most popular tourist circuit in India, which links Delhi, Agra and Jaipur in a neat triangle. A typical Golden Triangle trip travels from Delhi to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, then on to Jaipur and back to Delhi or in the reverse direction.

Seeing Jaipur as part of this famous circuit, rather than only on its own, lets you experience the three great cities of North India together on one trip, from the capital's grand imperial monuments and the breathtaking wonder of the Taj Mahal in Agra to the magnificent forts and royal palaces of Rajasthan in Jaipur. The three cities complement one another beautifully, telling the long story of the Mughals and the Rajputs side by side. To see exactly how it all fits together into a smooth, well-paced trip, our one week North India itinerary guide maps out the whole journey, day by day.

Best time to travel to Jaipur

The best time of year to travel from Delhi to Jaipur and to enjoy the Pink City in comfort, is the cool season, from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and comfortable for both the road journey and the sightseeing that follows. The summer months, from April to June, can be very hot across this part of northern India, which makes long days of sightseeing tiring, while the monsoon brings some rain and humidity from July to September, though it also turns the countryside green. Our best time to visit North India guide covers the seasons in detail across the whole Golden Triangle circuit.

Whatever the season you travel in, it is always best to set off from Delhi reasonably early in the day, to make the most of your time on the road and to arrive in Jaipur with plenty of the day still ahead of you for your first sights.
