Is Khatu Shyam a day trip from Delhi?
It can be, but it is a long one. At about 283 km and close to six hours each way, a Delhi to Khatu Shyam day trip means eleven or twelve hours on the road, so it works only if you leave very early, before dawn, and are content with a quick darshan before the long drive back. Many determined Delhi devotees do exactly this, especially for a specific Ekadashi or vow, setting off in the small hours to reach for a morning darshan and returning the same night.
For a more relaxed and rewarding pilgrimage, though, an overnight trip is far better, letting you reach in good time, take a peaceful darshan, perhaps catch an aarti, and rest before returning. Better still, since Khatu Shyam lies close to Jaipur, you can turn the trip into a short Rajasthan getaway, combining the darshan with a night in the Pink City, and coming home with both a blessing and a holiday. For families, the elderly, or anyone who dislikes a very long day at the wheel, the overnight or train option is well worth the small extra cost.
Is there a train to Khatu Shyam from Delhi?
Yes, and it is a popular option. The nearest railway station to the temple is Ringas Junction, about 17 km from Khatu, and Delhi is well connected to Ringas by direct and connecting trains, including services from Delhi Sarai Rohilla and Old Delhi toward Ringas and Rajasthan. From Ringas, shared jeeps, autos and taxis run continuously to Khatu village, taking around 30 minutes.
The overnight train is a comfortable, affordable way to make the pilgrimage from Delhi, arriving fresh for a morning darshan, which is why so many devotees choose it, especially during the Falgun Mela, when special trains are often added to handle the enormous rush. Booking a sleeper or AC berth in advance means you can rest through the journey and step off at Ringas ready for darshan, avoiding the tiring long drive altogether, a big advantage for families and older pilgrims.
Can you take a bus to Khatu Shyam from Delhi?
Yes. Several buses, both state and private, run from Delhi toward Khatu Shyam and Sikar, and there are direct services as well as connections via Jaipur or Sikar. Rajasthan and Haryana roadways, along with private and deluxe operators, serve the route, and during the mela the frequency increases greatly, with many special buses laid on for pilgrims. Buses are economical and run through the day and night, though the long journey is less comfortable than a train berth or a private car, so choose according to your budget and comfort.
Where is Khatu Shyam and who is Shyam Baba?
Khatu Shyam Ji temple stands in the village of Khatu, in the Sikar district of Rajasthan, in the Shekhawati region. It is one of the most visited temples in the state, dedicated to Shyam Baba, worshipped as a form of Barbarika, a figure from the Mahabharata.
According to the legend, Barbarika was a mighty warrior, the grandson of Bhima, blessed with infallible arrows and a vow to fight for whichever side was losing. Realising this would cause endless destruction in the great war, Lord Krishna, in disguise, asked him for his head in charity, and Barbarika gave it willingly. Moved by his supreme devotion and sacrifice, Krishna granted him the boon that he would be worshipped in the age of Kali Yuga under Krishna's own name, Shyam, and that his devotees' prayers would be answered. This is why he is beloved as Shyam Baba and as Haare Ka Sahara, the support of the defeated, and why those who feel low or lost turn to him for hope and strength. That story of selfless sacrifice, and the promise that no sincere devotee is turned away, is at the heart of the temple's vast and loyal following, which is especially strong across Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan, where entire families make the pilgrimage together year after year.
Khatu Shyam temple timings and aartis
The temple keeps seasonal timings, opening early and closing late with a midday break, and the hours shift between the winter and summer seasons.
Season | Timings |
Winter | 5:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM |
Summer | 4:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM |
Five aartis are performed through the day, and catching one is a moving experience:
Mangla Aarti: at the opening of the temple, in the very early morning.
Shringar Aarti: when Shyam Baba is dressed and adorned.
Bhog Aarti: around midday, when the food offering is made.
Sandhya Aarti: in the evening, at sunset.
Shayan Aarti: at night, when the temple closes.
Timings and aarti schedules vary by season and can change, especially around festivals, so reconfirm the current details before you travel, and time your journey from Delhi to reach in time for darshan.
The Falgun Lakhi Mela
The grandest event at Khatu Shyam is the Falgun Lakhi Mela, held every year in the Hindu month of Phalgun, which falls in February or March, just before Holi. Over its days, lakhs of devotees pour into Khatu, and the temple stays open around the clock.
The mela's most striking sight is the Nishan Yatra, when devotees walk long distances on foot, carrying tall triangular flags, or nishan, to offer at the temple. The 2026 mela is expected to run roughly from mid to late February, with the biggest crowds on the Ekadashi and Dwadashi days, though exact dates follow the Hindu calendar and the temple's announcement, so reconfirm nearer the time. Delhi sees a huge outflow of pilgrims to Khatu during the mela, so book trains, buses and rooms well in advance, as everything fills up fast.
Darshan tips for Khatu Shyam
A little preparation makes for a smoother, more peaceful darshan after the journey from Delhi:
Expect queues: on busy days, and especially at the mela and on Ekadashi, the darshan line can take two to five hours, so allow plenty of time.
Footwear off: shoes are not allowed inside, so deposit them at the free stands near the gates.
Travel light: carry only the essentials, as heavy bags and some items are not permitted inside the temple.
Shyam Kund: the holy pond where the deity's head is said to have been found is an important spot, and a dip is considered auspicious.
Prasad: offer and take home the famous prasad, along with the local peda and churma sweets Khatu is known for.
Rest first: after the long drive or overnight train, a short rest and a wash before darshan makes the whole experience calmer and more peaceful.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Khatu Shyam depends on what you seek. For the full spectacle of faith, the Falgun Mela in February or March is extraordinary, though extremely crowded. For a calmer darshan, the winter months of October to March offer pleasant weather and a more peaceful experience, which also makes the long drive from Delhi more comfortable, and any Ekadashi through the year is especially auspicious and busy.
Summers, from April to June, are hot for such a long road journey, so travel early, take breaks and carry water, or take the overnight train instead to avoid the heat and the driving. The monsoon brings a fresh greenness to the countryside and can be a quieter, more comfortable time to visit outside the festivals, though the odd shower is possible on the highway.
Combining Khatu Shyam with your trip
Because Khatu Shyam lies so close to Jaipur, it combines wonderfully with a Rajasthan or Golden Triangle trip from Delhi. A lovely plan is to travel from Delhi toward Jaipur, enjoy the Pink City using our things to do in Jaipur guide, and add the short onward darshan at Khatu Shyam, detailed in our Jaipur to Khatu Shyam distance guide. If you are continuing to the Taj city, our Agra to Khatu Shyam distance guide covers that leg too, so the temple slots neatly into the full Delhi, Agra and Jaipur circuit.
Khatu Shyam also makes a rewarding getaway in its own right, and it features among the trips in our nearby places to visit in Delhi guide. Devotees frequently add the nearby Salasar Balaji, one of the Hanuman shrines we mention in our Hanuman Jayanti 2027 guide, for a fuller pilgrimage circuit across the Shekhawati region, and some extend the trip to Jeen Mata and other local shrines, making a weekend of devotion out of it.
