Jaipur to Khatu Shyam Ji is about 72 km and takes roughly 1 hour 36 minutes by road, with a few route options.

The routes all run along the well-maintained Sikar Road and NH52, so it is a quick and comfortable drive on a good highway, and the temple is a very easy day trip or half-day trip from Jaipur.

How far is Khatu Shyam to Jaipur by road?

Khatu Shyam to Jaipur is about 73 to 98 km depending on the route, taking a similar time in reverse.

The direct NH52 route is the quickest, so allow around one and a half to two hours plus any stops.

Is there a train to Khatu Shyam?

Yes. The nearest railway station is Ringas Junction, about 17 km from the temple, and it is well connected to Jaipur by frequent trains, as well as to Delhi and other cities. From Ringas, shared jeeps, autos and taxis run continuously to Khatu village for a very small fare, taking around 30 minutes.

The train-plus-taxi option is popular and affordable, especially for pilgrims coming from further afield, since Ringas sees many Jaipur and Delhi trains, and during the Falgun Mela special trains are often run to handle the rush. From Ringas, the last leg to Khatu is quick and cheap, with shared jeeps and autos charging only a small per-person fare. For flexibility and comfort, though, many visitors from Jaipur simply drive or hire a taxi door to door, which lets them time their darshan around the aartis and avoid changing vehicles.

Can you take a bus to Khatu Shyam?

Yes. Rajasthan State Road Transport buses run regularly from Jaipur, from the Sindhi Camp bus stand, toward Sikar and Khatu, and there are direct and connecting services throughout the day. Local and private buses also link Sikar and Ringas with Khatu village, running continuously. Buses are cheap and frequent, if less comfortable than a private car, and a good option for budget-conscious pilgrims, though during the Falgun Mela they get extremely crowded, so plan ahead if you travel at that time.

Where is Khatu Shyam and who is Shyam Baba?

Khatu Shyam Ji temple stands in the village of Khatu, in the Sikar district of Rajasthan, on the Jaipur to Sikar route in the Shekhawati region. Though the village itself is small, the temple is one of the most visited in the state, drawing tens of lakhs of pilgrims every year, and Khatu has grown a whole ecosystem of dharamshalas, hotels, shops and eateries to serve them. It is dedicated to Shyam Baba, worshipped as a form of Barbarika, a figure from the Mahabharata.

According to the legend, Barbarika was a mighty warrior, the grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha, blessed with three infallible arrows and a vow to fight for whichever side was losing. As the great Mahabharata war approached, Krishna realised that such a warrior, always siding with the weaker army, would swing the battle back and forth endlessly and cause boundless destruction. To test and then guide him, Krishna, disguised as a brahmin, asked Barbarika for his head in charity, and Barbarika, true to his word, gave it willingly. Before dying, he asked only to witness the great war, so Krishna placed his head on a hill overlooking the battlefield.

Moved by his supreme devotion and sacrifice, Krishna granted him the boon that he would be worshipped in the age of Kali Yuga under Krishna's own name, Shyam, and that the prayers of his devotees would be answered. This is why he is beloved as Shyam Baba and also as Haare Ka Sahara, the support of the defeated, and why devotees who feel low, lost or beaten turn to him for strength and hope. That story of selfless sacrifice, and the promise that no sincere devotee goes away empty-handed, is at the heart of the temple's immense and deeply loyal following, which stretches across North India and beyond.

Khatu Shyam temple timings and aartis

The temple keeps seasonal timings, opening early and closing late, with a midday break, and the hours shift between the winter and summer seasons.

Five aartis are performed through the day, and catching one is a moving experience:

• Mangla Aarti: at the opening of the temple, in the very early morning.

• Shringar Aarti: when Shyam Baba is dressed and adorned.

• Bhog Aarti: around midday, when the food offering is made.

• Sandhya Aarti: in the evening, at sunset.

• Shayan Aarti: at night, when the temple closes.

Timings and aarti schedules vary by season and can change, especially around festivals, so reconfirm the current details before you travel.

The Falgun Lakhi Mela

The grandest event at Khatu Shyam is the Falgun Lakhi Mela, held every year in the Hindu month of Phalgun, which falls in February or March, just before Holi. Over its days, lakhs of devotees pour into Khatu, and the temple stays open around the clock to receive them.

The mela's most striking sight is the Nishan Yatra, when devotees walk long distances, many all the way from Ringas or even from Delhi and beyond, carrying tall triangular flags, or nishan, on foot to offer at the temple as a mark of their faith and gratitude. The roads to Khatu fill with these flag-bearing pilgrims, singing bhajans, and the whole town becomes a sea of devotion. Many also take a holy dip in the Shyam Kund, the sacred pond, during the mela.

The 2026 mela is expected to run roughly from mid to late February, with the biggest crowds on the Ekadashi and Dwadashi days, though exact dates follow the Hindu calendar and the temple's announcement, so reconfirm nearer the time. During the mela the temple stays open around the clock and receives lakhs of visitors, so while it is an unforgettable spectacle of faith, it demands real patience and careful planning for the enormous crowds, the long queues and the pressure on transport and accommodation. If you want the atmosphere without the crush, visiting just before or after the peak days is a good compromise.

Darshan tips for Khatu Shyam

A little preparation makes for a smoother, more peaceful darshan:

• Expect queues: on busy days, and especially at the mela and on Ekadashi, the darshan line can take anywhere from two to five hours, so allow plenty of time, wear comfortable clothes, and carry water for the wait.

• Footwear off: shoes are not allowed inside, so deposit them at the free stands near the gates.

• Travel light: carry only the essentials, as heavy bags and some items are not permitted inside the temple.

• Shyam Kund: the holy pond where the deity's head is said to have been found is an important spot, and a dip in its waters is believed to be purifying and auspicious, so many pilgrims include it in their visit.

• Prasad: offer and take home the famous prasad, along with the local peda and churma sweets that Khatu is known for, sold at shops all around the temple.

• Go early: for a calmer darshan, arrive soon after the morning opening, outside the mela.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Khatu Shyam depends on what you want. For the full spectacle of faith, the Falgun Mela in February or March is extraordinary, though extremely crowded. For a calmer darshan, the winter months of October to March offer pleasant weather and a more peaceful experience, and any Ekadashi through the year is considered especially auspicious, and correspondingly busy.

Summers, from April to June, are hot, so aim for the early morning or evening darshan and carry water. The monsoon, from July to September, brings a welcome freshness to the Shekhawati countryside, and can be a quieter, greener time to visit outside the main festivals. Whenever you go, an early start from Jaipur beats both the heat and the day's crowds, and a weekday visit outside the mela and away from Ekadashi will always be calmer than a weekend or festival day.
