Is Khatu Shyam a day trip from Agra?

Honestly, no. At about 318 km and five and a half hours each way, Khatu Shyam is too far for a comfortable day trip from Agra, since that would mean eleven or more hours of driving in a single day, leaving little time for a peaceful darshan. It is far better planned as an overnight trip, or, best of all, as part of a wider Rajasthan journey.

The smartest approach uses geography to your advantage. Khatu Shyam sits only about 80 km from Jaipur, on the far side of the Pink City, so the natural way to visit from Agra is to travel to Jaipur first, the classic Golden Triangle leg, and then make the short onward hop to Khatu Shyam. This turns a long haul into a comfortable, rewarding trip, and it means you can combine the darshan with sightseeing in Jaipur rather than spending your whole day behind the wheel.

If you must do it in one long day, leave Agra very early, before dawn, aim to reach for a mid-morning or midday darshan, and expect a tiring drive back the same evening. But for most pilgrims and travellers, a night in Jaipur or Khatu turns a gruelling round trip into a relaxed and meaningful one, and lets you catch an aarti in peace rather than rushing.

Is there a train to Khatu Shyam from Agra?

The nearest railway station to the temple is Ringas Junction, about 17 km from Khatu, from where shared jeeps, autos and taxis run continuously to the temple in around 30 minutes. From Agra, you would take a Jaipur-bound or Rajasthan-bound train and connect toward Ringas, often changing at Jaipur, which is a major junction well linked to Agra.

For many, though, the drive via Jaipur is simpler for this route, especially in a private car that can be timed around the darshan and does not involve changing between train and jeep. The train works best for those already planning to break the journey in Jaipur, or for budget travellers happy to make the connections, since Agra to Jaipur trains are frequent and Ringas is well served from there.

Can you take a bus to Khatu Shyam?

Yes. There is no shortage of buses, though it usually means changing along the way. From Agra you can travel to Jaipur by frequent buses, and from Jaipur's Sindhi Camp bus stand, Rajasthan State Road Transport buses run toward Sikar and Khatu. Local and private buses also link Sikar and Ringas with Khatu village. Buses are economical but involve changes and less comfort over this long distance, so many pilgrims prefer a private car for this longer route.

Where is Khatu Shyam and who is Shyam Baba?

Khatu Shyam Ji temple stands in the village of Khatu, in the Sikar district of Rajasthan, in the Shekhawati region beyond Jaipur. It is one of the most visited temples in the state, dedicated to Shyam Baba, worshipped as a form of Barbarika, a figure from the Mahabharata.

According to the legend, Barbarika was a mighty warrior, the grandson of Bhima, blessed with infallible arrows and a vow to fight for whichever side was losing. Realising this would cause endless destruction in the great war, Lord Krishna, in disguise, asked him for his head in charity, and Barbarika gave it willingly. Moved by his supreme devotion and sacrifice, Krishna granted him the boon that he would be worshipped in the age of Kali Yuga under Krishna's own name, Shyam, and that his devotees' prayers would be answered. This is why he is beloved as Shyam Baba and as Haare Ka Sahara, the support of the defeated, and why those who feel low or lost turn to him for hope and strength. That story of selfless sacrifice, and the promise that no sincere devotee is turned away, is at the heart of the temple's vast and loyal following, which stretches across Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana and far beyond, and explains why so many are willing to make the long journey from Agra to seek his blessings.

Khatu Shyam temple timings and aartis

The temple keeps seasonal timings, opening early and closing late with a midday break, and the hours shift between the winter and summer seasons.

Season

Timings

Winter

5:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM

Summer

4:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Five aartis are performed through the day, and catching one is a moving experience:

  • Mangla Aarti: at the opening of the temple, in the very early morning.

  • Shringar Aarti: when Shyam Baba is dressed and adorned.

  • Bhog Aarti: around midday, when the food offering is made.

  • Sandhya Aarti: in the evening, at sunset.

  • Shayan Aarti: at night, when the temple closes.

Timings and aarti schedules vary by season and can change, especially around festivals, so reconfirm the current details before you travel, and plan your arrival from Agra so you reach in time for a darshan.

The Falgun Lakhi Mela

The grandest event at Khatu Shyam is the Falgun Lakhi Mela, held every year in the Hindu month of Phalgun, which falls in February or March, just before Holi. Over its days, lakhs of devotees pour into Khatu, and the temple stays open around the clock.

The mela's most striking sight is the Nishan Yatra, when devotees walk long distances on foot, carrying tall triangular flags, or nishan, to offer at the temple. The 2026 mela is expected to run roughly from mid to late February, with the biggest crowds on the Ekadashi and Dwadashi days, though exact dates follow the Hindu calendar and the temple's announcement, so reconfirm nearer the time. If you are travelling the long way from Agra during the mela, plan transport and accommodation well in advance, as the whole region fills up.

Darshan tips for Khatu Shyam

A little preparation makes for a smoother, more peaceful darshan after the long journey:

  • Expect queues: on busy days, and especially at the mela and on Ekadashi, the darshan line can take two to five hours, so allow plenty of time.

  • Footwear off: shoes are not allowed inside, so deposit them at the free stands near the gates.

  • Travel light: carry only the essentials, as heavy bags and some items are not permitted inside the temple.

  • Shyam Kund: the holy pond where the deity's head is said to have been found is an important spot, and a dip is considered auspicious.

  • Prasad: offer and take home the famous prasad, along with the local peda and churma sweets Khatu is known for.

  • Stay overnight: given the distance from Agra, an overnight in Khatu or Jaipur lets you enjoy an unhurried darshan.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Khatu Shyam depends on what you seek. For the full spectacle of faith, the Falgun Mela in February or March is extraordinary, though extremely crowded. For a calmer darshan, the winter months of October to March offer pleasant weather and a more peaceful experience, which also makes the long drive from Agra more comfortable, and any Ekadashi through the year is especially auspicious and busy.

Summers, from April to June, are hot for such a long road journey, so if you travel then, drive early, carry plenty of water, and take breaks along the way. Whenever you go, an early start from Agra, or better still a night in Jaipur along the way, makes the trip far easier and more enjoyable.

Combining Khatu Shyam with the Golden Triangle

This is where a little planning transforms the trip. Because Khatu Shyam is so close to Jaipur, it slots beautifully into a Golden Triangle journey. A wonderful plan is to travel from Agra to Jaipur, enjoy the Pink City using our things to do in Jaipur guide, and then make the short onward trip to Khatu Shyam for darshan, covered in detail in our Jaipur to Khatu Shyam distance guide. In effect, you turn a single long drive into a two-part journey with a night in Jaipur in between, seeing the forts and palaces of the Pink City on the way to the temple.

This also fits perfectly with the classic Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, so a devotee travelling the circuit can simply add a Khatu Shyam darshan onto the Jaipur leg without going far out of the way. Before you leave Agra, our things to do in Agra guide helps you make the most of the Taj city, and devotees often add the nearby Salasar Balaji, one of the Hanuman shrines we mention in our Hanuman Jayanti 2027 guide, for a fuller pilgrimage. To savour the region's food along the way, our famous foods in Agra guide is a tasty companion.

Travel tips for Agra to Khatu Shyam

  • Consider a night in Jaipur to break the journey and see the Pink City.

  • Or take a train toward Ringas, connecting via Jaipur.

  • Start early and reach in time for a darshan and an aarti.

  • Visit October to March for comfort, or the Falgun Mela for the spectacle.
