Before you head out of the city, Agra has more than just the Taj. The essential monuments within Agra are:

• Mehtab Bagh: the riverside garden directly across the Yamuna, with a postcard view of the Taj at sunset.

• Akbar's Tomb, Sikandra: the grand tomb of Emperor Akbar, about 10 km from the centre.

Fatehpur Sikri

About 40 km from Agra, Fatehpur Sikri is the best-known day trip and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was Emperor Akbar's capital in the 1570s before being abandoned and it survives beautifully intact, with the towering Buland Darwaza, the marble tomb of Salim Chishti, the Panch Mahal and the grand Jama Masjid.

Mathura and Vrindavan

The sacred twin towns of Mathura and Vrindavan are among the most popular places near Agra, about 58 to 70 km away and roughly an hour and a half by road. Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna, home to the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple, while Vrindavan, where Krishna spent his childhood, is filled with temples like Banke Bihari, the ISKCON temple and the dazzling Prem Mandir.

The two are only about 15 km apart, so you can comfortably visit both in a single day, though the crowds are enormous during Janmashtami and Holi.

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary (Keoladeo National Park)

About 55 km from Agra in Rajasthan, the Keoladeo National Park, still widely known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is a UNESCO World Heritage wetland and one of India's finest birding sites. It hosts more than 370 bird species and the winter migratory season brings spectacular numbers.

You explore it on foot, by cycle or by a cycle-rickshaw with a trained guide, making it a peaceful contrast to the monuments. It is a superb half-day or full-day trip for nature lovers.

National Chambal Sanctuary

About 70 km from Agra, the National Chambal Sanctuary protects one of India's cleanest rivers and a boat safari here is a genuine highlight. The Chambal is home to the rare gharial, the fish-eating crocodile, along with Gangetic dolphins, mugger crocodiles, turtles and countless birds.

It is an offbeat, uncrowded experience that surprises most visitors and it pairs naturally with the nearby Bateshwar temples.

Bateshwar

About 70 km from Agra on the banks of the Yamuna, Bateshwar is a remarkable and little-visited complex of more than 100 Shiva temples lined along the river ghats. It is deeply atmospheric and wonderfully photogenic and it is famous for its large annual cattle fair.

Its closeness to the Chambal sanctuary makes the two an easy combined day out for travellers who want to escape the tourist trail.

Dholpur and Gwalior

For a longer day trip, two historic destinations lie to the south:

• Dholpur: about 55 km away in Rajasthan, known for its old palaces, the sacred Machkund and the dramatic Chambal ravines.

• Gwalior: about 120 km south in Madhya Pradesh, home to the magnificent hilltop Gwalior Fort, the opulent Jai Vilas Palace and the tomb of the musician Tansen. It is best as a full-day trip or overnight.

How do you plan a trip around Agra's nearby places?

Agra is one of the best bases in North India for day trips and a little planning lets you see far more than the Taj:

• One day: the Taj, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, the classic combination.

• A second day: Mathura and Vrindavan for temples or Bharatpur for birds.

• For something offbeat: the Chambal safari with Bateshwar.

When is the best time to visit places near Agra?

The best time to visit the places near Agra is October to March, when the weather is comfortable for both monuments and outdoor sites. Winter is especially rewarding at the Bharatpur bird sanctuary, when the migratory birds arrive in huge numbers.

Summer from April to June is very hot for open sites and river safaris and the monsoon can make some rural roads slow. For the temples of Mathura and Vrindavan, expect enormous crowds during Janmashtami and Holi.

• Base yourself in Agra and plan day trips by road, which is the easiest way to reach most of these places.

• Combine nearby sites, such as the Chambal safari with Bateshwar or Mathura with Vrindavan.

• Visit Bharatpur in winter for the migratory birds.

• Start early for the longer trips to Gwalior or Chambal.

• Keep Fatehpur Sikri for a Friday, when the Taj is closed.

• Carry water, sun protection and a valid ID for the sanctuaries and monuments.
