The Agra Metro is one of India's newest metro systems, built to move visitors between the city's great Mughal monuments without the traffic. What is the Agra Metro?

The Agra Metro is a rapid transit system operated by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation, and its first stretch opened on 6 March 2024. That makes it one of the newest metros in the country, and it was planned with tourism in mind, connecting the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and other landmarks so visitors can skip the city's notorious congestion.

The operational section is the priority corridor, part of Line 1, running from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar near the Jama Masjid. The full Phase 1 network, still under construction, will be far larger, but the current stretch already links the two sights most visitors care about most.

What is the Agra Metro route and stations?

The operational corridor has six stations, the first three elevated and the last three underground, running from the Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar. In order, they are:

• Taj East Gate (elevated), closest to the Taj Mahal's eastern entrance.

• Basai (elevated).

• Fatehabad Road (elevated), the hotel and tourism belt.

• Taj Mahal, Purani Mandi (underground), close to the Taj.

• Agra Fort (underground), for the great red fort.

• Mankameshwar, Jama Masjid (underground), the current end of the line near the old city.

The wider Phase 1 network will add much more. Line 1, the Yellow Line, is planned to run Sikandra to Taj East Gate over about 14.25 km, and Line 2, the Blue Line, is planned from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar. Together they will cover roughly 29 km and around 27 to 28 stations, with completion targeted around 2026 and Agra College planned as the interchange.

What is the Agra Metro map?

The clearest, most current Agra Metro map is the official one from the metro authority, which shows the operational corridor and the planned lines. You can view it on the official site at agra.upmetrorail.com, which also carries live updates on stations and timings.

For a quick mental map, picture the operational line as a short north-to-south link: the Taj East Gate and Taj Mahal stations sit at the monument end, Fatehabad Road covers the hotels, and Agra Fort and Mankameshwar carry you towards the old city.

What are the Agra Metro timings?

The Agra Metro runs every day, including weekends and public holidays, with services from about 7 AM to 9 PM. Timings can vary slightly on weekends and holidays, so check before an early or late trip.

Because the last train is around 9 PM, the metro suits daytime sightseeing rather than late-night travel, so plan a taxi if you are out late.

What are the Agra Metro fares and tickets?

Agra Metro fares are based on the number of stations you travel, and they are very affordable.

You can pay with a QR ticket or token, and the NCMC RuPay On-The-Go contactless card gives a 10 percent discount on every journey. For a tourist covering the short operational corridor, the fare is usually just ₹10 to ₹20.

How do you use the Agra Metro for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort?

The metro is genuinely useful for the two headline sights, and knowing the right station saves you time:

• For the Taj Mahal: use the Taj Mahal (Purani Mandi) station or the Taj East Gate station, both close to the monument, with Taj East Gate handy for the eastern entrance.

• For Agra Fort: use the Agra Fort station.

• For the Jama Masjid and old city: use the Mankameshwar (Jama Masjid) station.

• For hotels on Fatehabad Road: use the Fatehabad Road station.

That means you can ride the metro between your Fatehabad Road hotel, the Taj and Agra Fort for a few rupees, avoiding the traffic and parking around the monuments.

Travel tips for the Agra Metro

• Use Taj East Gate or Taj Mahal station for the Taj, and Agra Fort station for the fort.

• Base yourself near Fatehabad Road to ride the metro to the sights.

• Carry an NCMC card for a 10 percent discount if you will ride often.

• Plan around the roughly 7 AM to 9 PM service window.

• Keep a taxi option for the railway station, Sikandra and Fatehpur Sikri, which the metro does not yet serve.
