The Dipak Road route is the direct one, and it is the route almost every auto and taxi takes.

How far is Agra Fort to Taj Mahal?

Agra Fort to Taj Mahal is even shorter, about 1.3 km and just 3 minutes by road on the fastest route.

This is the fastest route in normal traffic, though the roads around the monuments can get busy at peak hours, so allow a little extra at midday.

How do you travel between the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort?

With barely two kilometres between them, you have several easy options:

• Auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw: the most common and convenient choice, quick and cheap, with plenty waiting at both monuments.

• Metro: a fast, air-conditioned hop between the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort stations, covered in detail below.

• Cycle rickshaw: a slower, more leisurely option for the short distance.

• Nearest station to the Taj Mahal: the Taj Mahal station, also called Purani Mandi, with Taj East Gate station serving the eastern entrance.

• Station for Agra Fort: the Agra Fort station.

• The route: the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort stations are neighbouring underground stops on the operational line, so it is a single short hop of only a few minutes.

• Fare and payment: the fare for such a short trip is the minimum, and you can pay by QR ticket, token or the NCMC card.

Which should you visit first, the Taj Mahal or Agra Fort?

Visit the Taj Mahal first, at sunrise, then Agra Fort afterwards. The Taj is at its most beautiful and least crowded in the early morning light, so it rewards an early start, and a Sunrise Taj tour is the best way to experience it.

After the Taj, move the short distance to Agra Fort, which is comfortable to explore later in the morning. Seeing the fort second also adds meaning, since it was here that Shah Jahan spent his final years looking out at the Taj he had built.

Both monuments are managed by the Archaeological Survey of India, with separate entry tickets and rates for Indian and foreign visitors. A few essentials:

• Taj Mahal: open sunrise to sunset, but closed to tourists on Fridays.

• Agra Fort: open sunrise to sunset, every day including Friday.

• Tickets: buy in advance where possible, and note the Taj has a separate ticket for entry to the main mausoleum.

• Confirm rates live, since ticket prices change from time to time.

Because the Taj is closed on Fridays, that is the ideal day to pair Agra Fort with Fatehpur Sikri instead.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit both monuments is October to March, when the weather is comfortable for walking the large open sites. Within the day, early morning is best for the Taj, both for the soft light and the thinner crowds.

Summer from April to June is very hot for a full morning at open monuments, and the monsoon adds humidity, so the cooler months are far more pleasant for a leisurely visit.

• Use the metro or an auto for the quick hop between the two.

• Remember the Taj is closed on Fridays, while Agra Fort stays open.
