Where is Ayodhya and why do people go?

Ayodhya sits on the banks of the Saryu River in eastern Uttar Pradesh, revered as the birthplace of Lord Ram. Since the historic consecration of the Ram Mandir in January 2024, it has become one of India's most visited pilgrimage cities, drawing well over a lakh devotees on a typical day.

People come above all for the Ram Mandir, built at the Ram Janmabhoomi, along with the many temples and ghats that fill the old city. The evening Saryu Aarti, the hilltop Hanuman Garhi and the atmosphere of a city at the heart of the Ramayana make it a deeply moving visit.

How far is Agra to Ayodhya by road?

Agra to Ayodhya is about 487 to 507 km by road and takes roughly 7 hours, across three practical routes.

The Agra to Lucknow Expressway is the backbone of the journey, carrying you smoothly as far as Lucknow, after which NH27 continues to Ayodhya. It is the fastest and most comfortable way to drive.

How far is Ayodhya to Agra?

Ayodhya to Agra is about 485 to 501 km, with similar routes in reverse.

For the return, the Agra to Lucknow Expressway route is again the quickest and an early start helps you cover the long distance in daylight.

How do you reach Ayodhya from Agra by train?

The train is a comfortable and popular way to reach Ayodhya and the redeveloped station sits right beside the temple city. Direct trains connect the region and Ayodhya's rail links have expanded greatly since the temple opened.

• Main station: Ayodhya Dham Junction, about 2 km from the Ram Mandir, reachable by auto, e-rickshaw or taxi.

• Also useful: Ayodhya Cantt station serves the city too.

• From Agra: travel is usually via Lucknow, a major junction with frequent onward trains to Ayodhya.

• Best for: pilgrims who prefer to rest rather than drive the full distance.

How do you reach Ayodhya by flight?

Ayodhya now has its own airport, which has transformed access for pilgrims from across the country. The Maharishi Valmiki International Airport is about 10 km from the Ram Mandir, with flights from Delhi and other major cities.

• Airport: Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhya.

• From Agra: as Agra has limited flights, air travel is usually routed through Delhi.

• Onward: a short taxi ride connects the airport to the temple and hotels.

Where should you break the Agra to Ayodhya journey?

If you drive, Lucknow is the natural place to break the journey, sitting roughly two-thirds of the way and offering plenty for an overnight or a meal.

• Lucknow: the Nawabi capital, famous for its kebabs, chikankari and monuments, an ideal overnight stop.

• On the expressway: use the designated fuel and food plazas rather than leaving the access-controlled road.

• Timing: many travellers reach Lucknow by afternoon, rest and continue to Ayodhya the next morning for an early darshan.

What are the Ram Mandir darshan timings and entry rules?

Entry to the Ram Mandir is free and general darshan is open roughly from 7:00 AM to 11:30 AM and from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, though it is always worth confirming the current schedule before you travel. A few important points:

• Free darshan: there is no charge and there is no paid special darshan, so beware of any scam offering one.

• Aarti passes: the Mangala, Shringar and Shayan aartis need a free pass, booked in advance through the official Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra website.

• Sugam darshan e-pass: a free time-slot pass can help you avoid the longest queues and slots are released a couple of weeks ahead.

• Carry ID: a valid government photo ID is required and mobiles and bags are restricted at the temple, so travel light.

What can you see in Ayodhya?

Ayodhya rewards at least a full day and most of its key sites are close together:

• Ram Mandir: the grand temple at the Ram Janmabhoomi, the heart of any visit.

• Hanuman Garhi: the hilltop Hanuman temple reached by a flight of steps, traditionally visited first.

• Kanak Bhawan: a beautiful temple linked to Sita and Ram.

• Ram Ki Paidi and Saryu Ghat: the riverside steps, wonderful for the evening Saryu Aarti.

• Dashrath Mahal: the palace shrine of King Dashrath.

Note that only vegetarian food is served in Ayodhya and free prasad is offered after darshan.

What should you see in Agra?

At the other end, Agra offers three world-class Mughal sights, so plan a full day here too.

• Taj Mahal: best at sunrise and closed on Fridays and a Sunrise Taj tour is the finest way to see it.

When is the best time to visit Ayodhya?

The best time to visit Ayodhya is October to March, when the weather is pleasant for temple visits and riverside walks. Summer from April to June is very hot, often above 40 degrees, which is tiring during the security checks and queues.

Two festivals draw enormous crowds: Ram Navami, marking Ram's birth and the famous Deepotsav around Diwali, when the ghats are lit with lakhs of lamps. They are spectacular but extremely busy, so plan well ahead if you visit then.

• Take the Agra to Lucknow Expressway for the fastest drive, then NH27 to Ayodhya.

• Break the journey overnight in Lucknow and reach Ayodhya for an early darshan.

• Book aarti or Sugam darshan passes free on the official website well in advance.

• Carry a valid photo ID and travel light, as bags and mobiles are restricted at the temple.

• Visit early morning or late afternoon on a weekday for shorter queues.

• Plan for vegetarian food only in Ayodhya and expect big crowds at Ram Navami and Deepotsav.
