What is the Golden Triangle with Rishikesh and Haridwar?
The Golden Triangle is India's classic and most popular tourist circuit, linking Delhi, the historic capital; Agra, home of the incomparable Taj Mahal; and Jaipur, the Pink City of Rajasthan, a perfect introduction to India's rich Mughal and Rajput heritage of forts, tombs and palaces.
Rishikesh and Haridwar are the twin holy towns on the sacred river Ganges in the state of Uttarakhand, at the very point where the great river flows down out of the Himalayan foothills onto the plains of North India. Haridwar is one of the seven holiest cities in all of Hinduism, a major centre of pilgrimage and Rishikesh, just a little upstream, is the yoga capital of the world and a thriving hub of river adventure. Adding them to the Golden Triangle blends its grand monuments and palaces with the living spirituality, yoga and adventure of the Ganges, for a richer, more varied, more balanced and more complete Indian trip.
Why add Rishikesh and Haridwar to the Golden Triangle?
The twin towns bring spirituality, yoga and adventure to the Golden Triangle, a wonderful combination:
The sacred Ganges: the holy river at perhaps its most beautiful and powerful, where it rushes clear and cool out of the mountains onto the plains, with the moving evening Ganga Aarti at both Haridwar and Rishikesh ranking among the great, unforgettable sights of India.
The yoga capital: Rishikesh is the acknowledged yoga capital of the world, full of ashrams, yoga schools, meditation and a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere, perfect for anyone seeking calm, wellness or a taste of authentic yoga at its source.
Adventure and nature: Rishikesh is also a buzzing hub of white-water rafting and adventure, set amid green forested hills and clear river gorges, a thrilling, active and refreshing contrast to the heat and bustle of the cities.
Easy to reach from Delhi: the twin towns are a simple, direct road or train trip north from Delhi, so they add to the circuit with no flight, no long journey and very little difficulty at all.
For anyone wanting a spiritual, wellness or adventurous dimension alongside the heritage and monuments, Rishikesh and Haridwar are a beautiful, meaningful and easy addition, offering something for the soul, the body and the spirit of adventure all in one and appealing to pilgrims, yoga lovers, families and thrill-seekers alike.
How to get to Rishikesh and Haridwar
Rishikesh and Haridwar are reached very easily from Delhi and so they are usually added to the Golden Triangle from the capital, either at the start or the end of the trip:
By road: the towns are about 220 to 240 km from Delhi, roughly five to six hours by road, with Haridwar reached first and Rishikesh about 25 km further upstream, so together they make a comfortable, straightforward drive north from the capital.
By train: both Haridwar and Rishikesh are well connected to Delhi by train, including fast and comfortable services, a restful, scenic and very popular way to reach the Ganges towns without the drive.
No flight needed: unlike far-off spiritual cities such as Varanasi, the twin towns are reached simply by road or rail from Delhi, so they fit naturally onto a Golden Triangle trip, added most easily before or after the main city circuit.
This ease is what makes Rishikesh and Haridwar such a popular addition, as our Golden Triangle with Varanasi, Golden Triangle with Mathura and Vrindavan and Golden Triangle with Ranthambore guides cover other rewarding extensions.
A suggested itinerary
Rishikesh and Haridwar are usually added from Delhi, either before or after the main Golden Triangle circuit, since they sit north of the capital. Here is a classic, well-tested outline that works well:
Days 1 to 2, Delhi: arrive and explore the capital at leisure, both Old and New Delhi and their great historic landmarks.
Day 3, Agra: drive to Agra to see the magnificent Taj Mahal, ideally at sunrise for the softest light and fewest crowds and the mighty Agra Fort.
Day 4, Agra to Jaipur: drive to Jaipur, stopping at Fatehpur Sikri on the way.
Days 5 to 6, Jaipur: explore the vibrant Pink City, the majestic Amber Fort, the grand City Palace, the Hawa Mahal and the colourful bazaars.
Day 7, Delhi to Haridwar and Rishikesh: return towards Delhi and continue north by road or travel comfortably by train to Haridwar, arriving in time for the spectacular evening Ganga Aarti on the ghats.
Day 8, Rishikesh: explore Rishikesh, crossing its famous bridges, visiting its temples and ashrams, trying some yoga and, if you wish, an exciting river-rafting adventure on the Ganges, then return to Delhi to depart.
The twin towns can equally well be visited at the very start of the trip, before the Golden Triangle, arriving into Delhi and heading straight north and we always tailor the plan carefully to your interests and pace.
What to see and do in Haridwar
Haridwar, where the Ganges reaches the plains, is one of the holiest cities in India and a place of deep pilgrimage:
The Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri: the spectacular, elaborate evening prayer ceremony at the main ghat, where priests offer great flaming lamps, incense, bells and chanting to the sacred river as crowds of pilgrims send tiny leaf-boats of flowers and light floating downstream, a deeply moving and unmissable sight.
Har Ki Pauri: the great, revered bathing ghat itself, believed to be the very point where the Ganges leaves the mountains for the plains, always alive with pilgrims, priests, ritual and colour from dawn until night.
Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples: two revered hilltop temples set on hills overlooking the town, each reached by a cable car with fine sweeping views over Haridwar and the river, hugely popular with pilgrims seeking blessings.
The ghats and old town: the many riverside ghats, temples, ashrams and bustling, colourful bazaars of Haridwar are full of devotion, life and energy, wonderful simply to wander and absorb.
What to see and do in Rishikesh
Rishikesh, the yoga capital, about 25 km upstream, blends spirituality, wellness and adventure:
Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula: the two iconic suspension footbridges spanning the fast-flowing Ganges, lined with temples, ashrams, shops and cafes and offering lovely views up and down the river and its green banks.
Yoga and ashrams: Rishikesh is world-famous as the yoga capital, packed with respected yoga schools, ashrams, meditation centres and a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere, drawing seekers, students and teachers from every corner of the globe for wellness and calm.
The Ganga Aarti: the beautiful, serene evening aarti held at Triveni Ghat and at the Parmarth Niketan ashram, a gentler, more meditative riverside ceremony than Haridwar's grand spectacle, deeply peaceful and spiritual.
White-water rafting and adventure: Rishikesh is India's undisputed rafting capital, offering thrilling white-water rafting down the Ganges through its rapids, along with riverside camping, bungee jumping, zip-lining and more, all in season.
The Beatles Ashram and temples: the famous former ashram or Chaurasi Kutia, where the Beatles once stayed to meditate in 1968, now atmospherically covered in murals and art, along with the many riverside temples and the relaxed, welcoming cafes, add to the town's unique character.
A single well-planned day allows you to enjoy the main highlights of both towns, from a Ganga Aarti to the bridges of Rishikesh, though those specifically seeking yoga, wellness, an ashram stay or a full rafting trip may very happily choose to stay on longer and slow right down.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Rishikesh and Haridwar, as with the whole Golden Triangle, is the cool season, October to March, when the weather is pleasant and comfortable for exploring the towns, the ghats and the temples, as our best time to visit North India guide explains in detail for the wider region.
For white-water rafting specifically, the season runs roughly from September to June, as rafting is suspended during the monsoon months, from July to September, when the swollen river runs dangerously high and fast. Summers, from April to June, are warm but generally bearable and remain popular, since Rishikesh and Haridwar are the gateway to the much cooler hill stations and the Char Dham pilgrimage of Uttarakhand just above, while the monsoon brings heavy, sustained rain to this Himalayan-foothill region. For a comfortable trip combining the two towns with the Golden Triangle, the cool season from October to March is much the best, with the spring especially good and popular for river rafting.
Tips for planning the trip
Add Rishikesh and Haridwar from Delhi, before or after the Golden Triangle, by road or train.
Allow at least a day and ideally two, for both towns and any yoga sessions or rafting.
Time your visit to Haridwar or to Rishikesh, to catch the moving evening Ganga Aarti.
Remember both are holy towns: they are largely vegetarian, with no alcohol or meat served.
For white-water rafting, plan for roughly September to June, avoiding the monsoon high water.
Dress modestly and behave respectfully at the ghats, temples and ceremonies of both towns.
Consider a night in Rishikesh for an ashram stay, a yoga class or an early rafting start.
