Quick Answer
To plan a Golden Triangle tour with Varanasi, do the classic Delhi, Agra and Jaipur circuit, then fly to Varanasi for the Ganges and the Ganga Aarti, before flying back. Allow about seven to eight days. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans these trips.
Adding Varanasi to the classic Golden Triangle is one of the most rewarding and popular ways to see India, pairing the grand Mughal and Rajput splendour of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur with the ancient, living spiritual heart of the country on the banks of the sacred Ganges. It takes a little more planning than the Golden Triangle alone, as Varanasi lies far to the east, but the reward is a far richer, deeper and more complete and moving journey through India. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages explains exactly how to plan a Golden Triangle tour with Varanasi, from the route to the itinerary, ideal as an extension to a Golden Triangle tour.
I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years guiding the Golden Triangle for Experience My India I have planned and arranged many trips extending the classic circuit east to Varanasi and the Ganges. Here is the clear, practical guide.

What is the Golden Triangle with Varanasi?
The Golden Triangle is India's classic and most popular tourist circuit, linking three great cities of the north in a rough triangle: Delhi, the historic capital; Agra, home of the incomparable Taj Mahal; and Jaipur, the Pink City of Rajasthan. Compact and easily driven, it is the perfect introduction to India's rich Mughal and Rajput heritage of forts, palaces, tombs and bazaars.
Varanasi, far away to the east on the banks of the holy river Ganges, is India's spiritual capital and one of the oldest living cities in the entire world. Adding it to the Golden Triangle blends the grand monuments, palaces and imperial history of the north with the timeless, intense riverside spirituality of Varanasi, creating a wonderfully complete, varied and deeply contrasting journey through both the outer splendour and the inner soul of India.
Why add Varanasi to the Golden Triangle?
Varanasi offers something completely different from the forts and palaces of the Golden Triangle and that contrast is exactly why it is such a rewarding addition:
India's spiritual heart: Varanasi, also called Kashi or Banaras, is the holiest city in Hinduism, a place of profound faith, ritual and pilgrimage gathered along the banks of the sacred Ganges, where the rhythms of devotion have continued unbroken for thousands of years.
A living, ancient city: one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, with a timeless, intense and utterly unique atmosphere in its crowded ghats, its labyrinthine lanes and its countless temples.
Unforgettable experiences: the peaceful sunrise boat ride on the Ganges and the dramatic evening Ganga Aarti are among the single most moving and memorable travel experiences to be had anywhere in the world.
A deeper picture of India: where the Golden Triangle shows you India's royal, imperial and architectural past, Varanasi reveals its living spiritual soul and the two together give a far fuller, richer and more rounded understanding of the country.
For many travellers, Varanasi turns out to be the most powerful and memorable part of the whole trip and the perfect, meaningful spiritual counterpoint to the royal grandeur and architectural splendour of the Golden Triangle. Together, the two make a journey that stays with you.
How to get to Varanasi from the Golden Triangle
The single most important thing to understand when planning is that Varanasi is a long way east of the Golden Triangle, several hundred kilometres from Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, so it is not driven to as part of the compact circuit. Trying to drive there and back would consume days of your trip. Instead, you reach it quickly and comfortably by air or rail:
By flight: the quickest and most popular way by far, a short, direct flight of around an hour and a half from Delhi to Varanasi, which has its own well-connected airport. Most itineraries fly to Varanasi after completing the Golden Triangle, then fly back to Delhi to connect with their onward or international departure.
By overnight train: a classic and characterful Indian option, an overnight train from Delhi or Agra to Varanasi, covering the long distance comfortably while you sleep in a berth, a more adventurous, scenic and economical way to travel for those who have the time.
Because of the sheer distance, flying is what we usually recommend to save precious time and travel in comfort, though the overnight train is a genuinely memorable experience in itself for those who want it. Either way, Varanasi is best planned as a fly-in, fly-out leg at the end or start of the trip, rather than as a road journey squeezed into the circuit.
A suggested itinerary
A Golden Triangle with Varanasi trip works beautifully over about seven to eight days, giving a good pace without rushing. Here is a classic, well-tested outline that we often follow:
Days 1 to 2, Delhi: arrive and explore the capital at leisure, from the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and bustling Chandni Chowk of Old Delhi to the grand imperial landmarks, India Gate and tombs of New Delhi.
Day 3, Agra: drive to Agra to see the magnificent, breathtaking Taj Mahal, ideally at sunrise for the softest light and fewest crowds, along with the mighty red-sandstone Agra Fort.
Day 4, Agra to Jaipur: drive to Jaipur, stopping at the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri on the way.
Days 5 to 6, Jaipur: explore the vibrant Pink City, the majestic hilltop Amber Fort, the grand City Palace, the Hawa Mahal and the colourful bazaars.
Day 7, fly to Varanasi: fly from Jaipur, usually via Delhi, to Varanasi, check in and in the evening witness the spectacular Ganga Aarti on the ghats by the river.
Day 8, Varanasi: rise early for a magical sunrise boat ride on the Ganges, then explore the ghats, the old city lanes and temples and perhaps peaceful Sarnath nearby, before flying back to Delhi to depart or continue onward.
This outline can easily be shortened, lengthened or reversed to suit you, for instance starting in Varanasi and ending in Delhi or adding extra days in any city and we always tailor it carefully to your pace, interests and travel dates.
What to see and do in Varanasi
Varanasi is all about the Ganges and its timeless spiritual life:
The sunrise boat ride: a gentle boat ride on the Ganges at dawn, gliding past the ghats and watching the ancient city awaken as pilgrims bathe, pray and perform rituals in the soft golden morning light, is the single most iconic and magical Varanasi experience, quiet and deeply moving.
The Ganga Aarti: the spectacular, elaborate evening prayer ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat, where priests offer great flaming lamps, incense, flowers, bells and chanting to the sacred river as crowds gather on the steps and in boats, a mesmerising and unforgettable sight.
The ghats: the long, continuous line of ghats, the great flights of stone steps leading down to the river, are the very soul of the city, endlessly full of pilgrims, priests, sadhus, bathers, life and ritual from before dawn until after dark.
Kashi Vishwanath Temple: the revered golden-spired temple to Lord Shiva, one of the holiest and most important shrines in all of India, at the very heart of the old city, recently opened up with a grand riverside corridor.
The old city lanes: the narrow, winding, atmospheric lanes behind the ghats, packed with tiny temples, shops, silk weavers, sweet stalls and street life, are endlessly fascinating to wander and get pleasantly lost in.
Sarnath: just a short drive outside Varanasi, the tranquil site where Lord Buddha gave his very first sermon after enlightenment, a serene and deeply important Buddhist pilgrimage site with its great Dhamek Stupa, monasteries and museum.
A full day and two nights in Varanasi is the ideal minimum, letting you experience both the peaceful sunrise on the river and a dramatic evening Aarti, the two great bookends of the Varanasi day, along with time for the ghats, the old city and perhaps Sarnath. It is an intense, vivid and unforgettable place and worth giving proper time to rather than rushing.
What to see in the Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle itself remains the heart of the trip:
Delhi: the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk of Old Delhi and India Gate, Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar in New Delhi, as our things to do in Delhi guide covers.
Agra: the incomparable Taj Mahal, the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, as our things to do in Agra guide describes, with the Taj best at sunrise, as our best time to visit the Taj Mahal guide explains.
Jaipur: the Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar, as our things to do in Jaipur guide covers and the gateway to the rest of Rajasthan, as our places to visit in Rajasthan from Delhi guide describes.
Best time to visit
The best time for a Golden Triangle with Varanasi trip is October to March, when the weather right across the northern plains, including Varanasi, is cool, dry and pleasant for sightseeing, boat rides and long evenings on the ghats. This is very much the peak season and by far the most comfortable time for the whole route, as our best time to visit North India guide explains in detail for the wider region.
Summers, from April to June, are very hot and sometimes fiercely so across the plains and Varanasi, so they are best avoided, while the monsoon, from July to September, brings rain and a swollen, higher river that can affect the boat rides and lower ghats. The great festival of Dev Deepawali in Varanasi, when the entire riverfront and its ghats are lit with countless flickering oil lamps, usually falls in November and is a truly spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime time to visit, though a very crowded one. For the most pleasant and comfortable trip overall, aim firmly for the cool season, October to March.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions
The Golden Triangle with Varanasi is the classic Delhi, Agra and Jaipur circuit extended to include Varanasi, India's spiritual capital on the Ganges. It combines the Mughal and Rajput heritage of the north with the ancient riverside spirituality of Varanasi, for a richer, more complete trip.
About seven to eight days is ideal, allowing two days in Delhi, one or two in Agra, two in Jaipur and two nights in Varanasi for both a sunrise boat ride and an evening Aarti. It can be shortened or extended to suit your pace and interests.
Varanasi is several hundred kilometres east of the Golden Triangle, so you reach it by air or rail, not by road. Most trips fly from Delhi to Varanasi, about an hour and a half or take an overnight train from Delhi or Agra, then fly back to Delhi to depart.
Varanasi is roughly 800 km east of Delhi, too far to drive as part of the Golden Triangle. It is reached in about an hour and a half by a direct flight or overnight by train. This is why Varanasi is added as a fly-in leg rather than a road journey.
