Quick Answer

Quick Read 3+ Reviews

Jaipur to Haridwar is about 512 km and around 8 hours by road via NE4, a long journey usually routed via Delhi. Haridwar, one of the seven holiest cities in India, is famous for the Ganges and the evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans these trips.

Haridwar, one of the seven holiest cities in Hinduism, is where the sacred Ganges leaves the Himalayas for the plains, a place of deep pilgrimage, bathing ghats and profoundly moving riverside ceremony. It lies a good way north of Jaipur, on the far side of Delhi, so this is a long journey, best made steadily over the day or broken with a stop, rather than rushed. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages covers the Jaipur to Haridwar distance in both directions, the best routes, the ways to travel and what to see and do there, ideal as a Ganges add-on to a Golden Triangle tour.

I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years arranging trips for Experience My India I have planned many journeys from Jaipur and Rajasthan up to the sacred Ganges at Haridwar and Rishikesh. Here is the clear, practical guide.

What is the best route from Jaipur to Haridwar?

The best and fastest route from Jaipur to Haridwar is via NE4, the modern expressway network, running north from Jaipur up through the Delhi region and on towards Haridwar in the green Uttarakhand foothills, at about 512 km and 7 hours 55 minutes. The older route via NH48 is a little shorter in distance but can be considerably slower in practice.

Because both Jaipur and Haridwar lie on opposite sides of Delhi, with Jaipur to the southwest of the capital and Haridwar to the north, the journey naturally runs via or near Delhi, whichever route you take. For this reason, many travellers sensibly break the drive there, spending a night in Delhi or start and finish the wider trip in the capital itself, turning a long single haul into a more comfortable, better-paced journey. Road conditions and traffic can vary along the way, so it is always wise to allow generous time and an early morning start helps you cover this long distance comfortably within a single day.

Ways to travel from Jaipur to Haridwar

Given the long distance, there are several ways to make the journey:

  • By road: by private car or taxi, taking around 8 hours on the fast NE4 expressway, usually up through the Delhi region. A flexible, comfortable option and one that is often sensibly broken with a stop or an overnight in Delhi, which lies conveniently on the way, to make the long distance easier and more relaxed.

  • By train: Haridwar has a major, very well-connected railway junction, reached by train from Jaipur usually via Delhi, a restful, scenic and popular way to cover the long distance comfortably while you relax, with the station right in the city.

  • By air: there is no direct flight, but you can fly from Jaipur, usually connecting via Delhi, to Dehradun airport, about 35 km from Haridwar, then take a short drive of under an hour, easily the quickest way to save time on this long overland journey.

For most travellers, a private car is the most flexible and comfortable choice, especially when combining Haridwar with a wider North India trip, while the train to Haridwar is a restful and popular option that arrives right in the city and flying via Dehradun is much the fastest way to bridge the long distance.

About Haridwar: the holy gateway to the Ganges

Haridwar is one of the seven holiest cities in all of Hinduism, an ancient and deeply revered place of pilgrimage set at the very point where the sacred river Ganges completes its long descent from the high Himalayas and flows out onto the great plains of North India. Its very name means the Gateway to God and for many millions of Hindus it is among the most sacred places on earth, a whole city entirely devoted to the worship of the holy river.

Haridwar is a bustling, colourful, intensely devotional city of ghats, temples and pilgrims, alive at every hour of the day and night with prayer, ritual, chanting and bathing in the holy Ganges. It is one of the four sacred cities that take turns to host the great Kumbh Mela, the largest religious gathering anywhere in the world, held here every twelve years, when tens of millions of pilgrims come to bathe. With its many riverside ghats, its two hilltop temples reached by cable car and, above all, its spectacular, atmospheric and moving evening Ganga Aarti, Haridwar offers a profound, powerful and unforgettable glimpse of living Hindu faith, a beautiful and complete contrast to the royal palaces and desert forts of Rajasthan.

Things to do in Haridwar

There is a great deal to experience in this holy city:

  • The Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri: the spectacular, elaborate and utterly unmissable evening prayer ceremony at the main ghat, where priests offer great flaming lamps, incense and rhythmic chanting to the sacred river as thousands of pilgrims send their own tiny leaf-boats of flowers and light floating gently downstream, a deeply moving and unforgettable highlight of any visit to the city.

  • Har Ki Pauri: the great, revered central bathing ghat itself, believed to be the very spot where the Ganges leaves the mountains for the plains, always alive and thronged with pilgrims bathing, praying and performing sacred rituals in the cool, fast-flowing holy waters from before dawn until long after dark.

  • Mansa Devi Temple: the revered hilltop temple to the wish-granting goddess Mansa Devi, reached by an aerial ropeway or cable car, that climbs high above the city, with fine sweeping views over the rooftops of Haridwar and the river below, one of the most popular pilgrimages in the city.

  • Chandi Devi Temple: another revered and popular hilltop temple, also reached by a cable car, set high on the Neel Parvat hill on the far side of the river, offering more magnificent panoramic views over the whole city and blessings for the many pilgrims who make the trip.

  • The temples and ghats: the many other temples, such as the ancient Maya Devi Temple, one of the sacred Shakti Peeths, along with the long line of riverside ghats and the bustling, narrow, colourful bazaars selling flowers, sweets, brassware and religious offerings, all full of colour, devotion and life, are wonderful to wander through slowly and soak in.

A day or two lets you comfortably enjoy the ghats, the two hilltop temples, the bustling bazaars and, above all, the truly unforgettable evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, which is very much the beating heart and the essence of Haridwar and worth timing your whole visit around.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Haridwar and to make the long journey up from Jaipur, is the cool season, October to March, when the weather is pleasant and comfortable for the ghats, the temples and the open-air evening aarti, as our best time to visit North India guide explains in detail for the wider region.

Summers, from April to June, are warm but generally bearable and Haridwar is the gateway to the much cooler hills just above, while the monsoon, from July to September, brings heavy rain and a swollen, fast-flowing river. Certain times see truly enormous crowds, above all the great Kumbh Mela, held here every twelve years and the Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage during the monsoon month of Shravan, usually July or August, when vast numbers of orange-clad pilgrims fill the city and the roads, so it is well worth planning around these if you would prefer a calmer, quieter visit. For most travellers, the cool, pleasant and comfortable season of October to March is much the best time to visit.

Combining Haridwar with your trip

Haridwar combines beautifully with a wider North India trip:

  • With Rishikesh: the yoga capital of Rishikesh, also on the Ganges, is only about 25 km from Haridwar, roughly 45 minutes' drive, so the two neighbouring holy towns are almost always visited together on one trip, as our Jaipur to Rishikesh distance guide covers the neighbouring town in full.

  • With the Golden Triangle: Haridwar and Rishikesh together make a wonderful spiritual and adventurous extension to a classic Golden Triangle trip, usually added on conveniently from Delhi, as our Golden Triangle with Rishikesh and Haridwar guide describes.

  • With the hills: Haridwar is a natural gateway to the cool Uttarakhand hills and hill stations just above it, as our best hill stations near Delhi guide covers.

For the Pink City itself, our things to do in Jaipur guide covers Jaipur before you set off north.

Travel tips for the Jaipur to Haridwar trip

  • Take NE4 for the fastest drive of about 8 hours, which runs up via the Delhi region.

  • Consider breaking the long journey with a restful night in Delhi, which lies on the way.

  • Or fly from Jaipur, usually connecting via Delhi, to Dehradun, then a short drive to Haridwar.

  • Do not attempt it as a day trip; plan at least an overnight and ideally a few days.

  • Time your visit carefully for the evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, the great highlight.

  • Remember Haridwar is a holy city: it is largely vegetarian, with no alcohol or meat served.

  • Combine Haridwar with nearby Rishikesh, only about 25 km away, for a fuller Ganges trip.
