What is the best route from Jaipur to Nathdwara?
The best and fastest route from Jaipur to Nathdwara is via NH48, the main highway running south from Jaipur through the city of Ajmer and on down towards Udaipur, at about 349 to 355 km and around 6 hours. Nathdwara lies just off the highway, a little before you reach Udaipur, so it is a good, easy and straightforward drive.
The route passes near the towns of Ajmer, with its famous Sufi shrine and the holy pilgrimage town of Pushkar, either of which can make a worthwhile stop or a short detour on the way south and continues down into the Mewar region of southern Rajasthan. Road conditions are generally good along the way and an early morning start lets you reach Nathdwara in good time for the temple, whose darshan happens only at set hours through the day, so timing matters.
Ways to travel from Jaipur to Nathdwara
Nathdwara is well reached from Jaipur and there are a few good ways to make the journey:
By car: the most flexible and comfortable option, a drive of around 6 hours on NH48, letting you reach the temple and any nearby sights at your own pace and work the day around the darshan hours, ideally with an overnight stay.
By train: the nearest railhead is Mavli Junction, about 30 km from Nathdwara, reached by trains from Jaipur, from where a short drive completes the journey; Udaipur, a little further, is another convenient rail option.
Via Udaipur: Nathdwara is only about 48 km from Udaipur, so many travellers base themselves in the beautiful Lake City and visit Nathdwara as an easy day trip or take it on the way through the region.
For most travellers, a private car is the easiest and most flexible way, especially for working around the temple timings, while basing yourself in nearby Udaipur and visiting Nathdwara from there is a very popular, comfortable and rewarding approach that also opens up the rest of southern Rajasthan.
About Nathdwara: the Shrinathji temple town
Nathdwara, whose name means the Gateway of the Lord, is a town built entirely around its famous temple, the Shrinathji temple, one of the holiest and most important Krishna shrines in all of India. It is the principal seat of the Pushtimarg or the Path of Grace, the devotional Vaishnava tradition founded by the great saint Vallabhacharya and a place of intense, warm, joyful devotion that draws pilgrims from across the country and the world.
The temple enshrines Shrinathji, a beloved form of Lord Krishna as a young boy of seven, shown lifting the great Govardhan hill on his little finger. According to tradition, the sacred image was brought here all the way from the Braj region, the land of Krishna's own childhood, in the 17th century to protect it in troubled times and was installed at Nathdwara, which grew from a village into the great pilgrimage town it is today. The whole life of the town revolves around the daily rhythms of the temple and its darshans and a visit offers a wonderful, moving and immersive glimpse of living Hindu devotion, quite different from the forts and palaces elsewhere in Rajasthan.
The Shrinathji Temple and darshan
The heart and whole purpose of any visit to Nathdwara is the darshan, the sacred viewing of the deity, at the great Shrinathji temple and it helps to understand how it works:
The jhankis: the deity is revealed for darshan several times a day, in a series of viewings called jhankis, each held at its own set hour and each with its own name and significance, from the early-morning Mangala darshan through to the evening Shayan, the eight successive glimpses marking out the child-god's whole day.
The changing adornment: for each and every darshan, Shrinathji is lovingly dressed and adorned quite differently, with changing clothes, jewels, flowers ornaments and painted cloth backdrops, all according to the time of day, the changing season and the particular festival, so that no two viewings ever look quite the same.
The atmosphere: the temple is a place of great, heartfelt devotion, singing, music and joyful celebration, especially during the main darshans, when devotees crowd eagerly in for a precious glimpse of the beloved deity, an intense, uplifting and deeply moving experience.
Timings and etiquette: darshan happens only at these set times, which vary through the year and can change, so it is essential to check the current schedule ahead; visitors should dress modestly and photography and phones are not allowed inside the temple itself.
Because darshan is at these fixed hours and the temple can be busy, planning your day carefully around the timings, ideally with an overnight stay in Nathdwara or nearby Udaipur, ensures that you do not miss the particular viewings you most wish to see, which is very much the point of the trip.
Things to see in and around Nathdwara
Beyond the temple, Nathdwara and its surroundings offer more:
Pichwai paintings: Nathdwara is famous the world over for its exquisite traditional Pichwai art, intricate, richly coloured and detailed cloth paintings depicting Shrinathji and scenes from Krishna's life originally hung as backdrops behind the deity and a beautiful living local craft you can watch being made, admire and buy in the town's workshops.
The Statue of Belief: the towering Statue of Belief or Vishwas Swaroopam, a colossal statue of Lord Shiva seated on a hill near Nathdwara, is among the tallest statues of its kind anywhere, a striking recent landmark visible from far around, with viewing galleries and worth a visit.
Eklingji Temple: the revered, beautiful and ancient temple complex of Eklingji, the presiding family deity of the Mewar royal house, lies on the road between Nathdwara and Udaipur, a serene, atmospheric and historic spot that is well worth a stop on the way.
Nearby Udaipur: the beautiful City of Lakes, only about 48 km away, is very often combined with Nathdwara, making a wonderful and popular pairing of pilgrimage, art and royal palaces in one trip.
A day or two lets you enjoy the temple and its darshans, the beautiful Pichwai art and the striking nearby sights at a relaxed and unhurried pace, especially if you base yourself in Udaipur close by.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Nathdwara is October to March, when the weather is cool and pleasant for the temple town, as our best time to visit North India guide explains for the wider region.
The temple is especially spectacular and joyful during its great festivals, above all Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna and Annakut or Govardhan Puja, celebrated just after Diwali, when Nathdwara marks the occasion with special fervour and elaborate decoration, along with the celebrations of Holi and Diwali themselves. These are magical, unforgettable but extremely crowded times, so plan and book well ahead if you hope to visit them. Summers, from April to June, are hot in this part of Rajasthan and the monsoon brings rain. For a comfortable, unhurried visit to the temple town, the cool season, October to March, is much the best.
