Mathura's Holi in 2027 centres on the Dwarkadhish Temple and runs mainly from 20 to 22 March, peaking on 21 and 22 March. The temple's famous colour play falls on Sunday, 21 March, with Holika Dahan that evening near Vishram Ghat and the main Rangwali Holi across Mathura on Monday, 22 March. Priests drench the crowd with organic yellow tesu flower-water from brass pichkaris, amid devotional Samaj Gayan singing. Mathura is about 180 km from Delhi, three to three and a half hours by road.

Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, is the beating heart of the Braj Holi and its most famous celebration unfolds at the historic Dwarkadhish Temple. In 2027 the temple's Holi runs mainly from 20 to 22 March, peaking on 21 and 22 March, when the courtyards fill with colour, music and tens of thousands of pilgrims. The signature moment sees the priests drench the crowd in organic yellow tesu flower-water from great brass pichkaris, while traditional Samaj Gayan chants ring through the halls, before the main Rangwali Holi sweeps the whole city on 22 March. Mathura is about 180 km from Delhi, an easy half-day trip. This guide covers the dates, what happens, how to reach it and the wider Braj Holi calendar. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans the trip.

I was born in Delhi and in 11 years planning journeys across the region for Experience My India I have seen the Dwarkadhish Holi at its joyful, overwhelming best. It is thrilling, but it needs planning to enjoy safely. Here is everything you need.

When is Mathura Holi 2027?

Mathura's Holi festivities run mainly across three days in 2027, from Saturday 20 March to Monday 22 March, building to a peak on the 21st and 22nd. Here is how the days unfold at and around the Dwarkadhish Temple.

Holi at the Dwarkadhish Temple

The Dwarkadhish Temple, built in 1814 and belonging to the Pushtimarg tradition, is the epicentre of Mathura's Holi. Its most famous ritual is the tesu-water play: priests fill great brass syringes or pichkaris, with organic yellow water made from tesu, the palash or flame-of-the-forest flower and drench the courtyard crowds in colour. Filling the halls throughout is the Samaj Gayan, the temple's traditional congregational singing of dhrupad and dhamar chants, giving the celebration a deeply devotional heart beneath the exuberance. The temple draws tens of thousands of pilgrims over the Holi days, so an early-morning arrival is essential to get inside and find a place.

Holika Dahan and the main Rangwali Holi

On the evening of 21 March, Holika Dahan is observed, with sacred bonfires lit across the city, notably near the riverside Vishram Ghat, marking the triumph of good over evil on the eve of the main festival. The next day, Monday 22 March, is the great Rangwali Holi, also called Dhulendi, when the whole of Mathura and the Braj region erupts into the classic festival of colours, with people playing with gulal and coloured water in the streets, temples and ghats. This is the climax of the entire Braj Holi season.

How to reach Mathura from Delhi

Mathura is one of the easiest Braj towns to reach from Delhi. By road it is about 180 km and three to three and a half hours on the smooth Yamuna Expressway, ideal if you want to arrive early for the temple. By train it is even simpler, as Mathura Junction is a major station with frequent services from Delhi, including fast trains, taking around two to three hours. Our Delhi Agra Mathura map shows how the corridor connects. During Holi the old-city lanes around the Dwarkadhish Temple are closed to vehicles, so you will park away from the centre and walk in and the crowds are immense, so plan to arrive well before the day's play begins.

The wider Braj Holi 2027 calendar

Mathura's Holi is the grand finale of a week-long Braj Holi season, when each town celebrates on its own day. Many visitors combine several and the flower Holi at Vrindavan and the cane Holi at Gokul are covered in our Phoolon Wali Holi 2027 Vrindavan from Delhi and Chhadimar Holi 2027 Gokul from Delhi guides. Here is the full 2027 calendar.

Tips for attending Mathura Holi

A few things make the experience far better. Arrive at the Dwarkadhish Temple very early, ideally soon after dawn, as the temple and the lanes fill rapidly and access can close once it is full. Wear old clothes you do not mind ruining and closed shoes, protect your phone and camera in a waterproof pouch and wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from the flying colour and water. Travel light with valuables secured, as the crowds are dense and keep children and elders close. Go with a respectful, devotional spirit, since this is a sacred temple festival. A car and a local guide who knows the road closures and the safe way to take most of the stress out of the day.

Combining with Vrindavan, Gokul and Agra

Mathura sits at the centre of Braj, so it pairs beautifully with the region's other Holis and sights. Vrindavan and Gokul are a short drive away for the flower and cane Holis and the town's own temples and ghats are covered in our places to visit in Mathura guide. Agra with the Taj Mahal is only about 60 km on, easy to add with our Agra places of interest guide. If you enjoy planning around festivals, our Diwali 2026 in India guide covers another of the country's great celebrations.

Where to stay and best time to go

Mathura and neighbouring Vrindavan make the best bases for the Braj Holi and rooms fill months ahead, so book well in advance, ideally by the end of 2026 for a March 2027 trip; our where to stay in Mathura guide helps you choose. Arriving a day or two before the main Holi lets you enjoy the temple festivities and the nearby village Holis at a calmer pace before the 22 March climax. March is pleasant, warm by day and cool in the mornings.

I booked our Mathura Holi 2026 tour with Experience My India, and the arrangements were handled very professionally. Abhay ji helped us plan the hotel stay, car pickup from Delhi, and early departure so we could reach Dwarkadhish Temple before the crowds became too heavy. The route planning and timings were well managed, and we enjoyed the Holi celebrations without worrying about transport or parking. It was a wonderful experience for our family.
