Mirza Ghalib Haveli or Ghalib ki Haveli, is the restored Old Delhi home of the great 19th-century Urdu and Persian poet Mirza Ghalib, now a free museum in Ballimaran near Chandni Chowk. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 6 PM. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, arranges Old Delhi tours.

Tucked into the narrow lanes of Ballimaran in Old Delhi, Mirza Ghalib Haveli is the beautifully restored home of one of the greatest poets the subcontinent has produced, now a quiet and moving little museum devoted to his life and verse. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages covers everything you need to plan a visit, the timings and entry fee, how to find it in the maze of Chandni Chowk, what you can see inside and how it fits into a wider day exploring Old Delhi, whether on its own or as part of a Golden Triangle tour.

I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years of guiding the Golden Triangle for Experience My India I have walked the lanes of Ballimaran many times and Ghalib ki Haveli remains one of my favourite hidden corners of the old city, a place where the noise of Chandni Chowk fades and the poet's world comes quietly to life. Here is how to make the most of it.

Who was Mirza Ghalib?

Mirza Ghalib, born Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, was the pre-eminent Urdu and Persian poet of 19th-century Delhi and remains among the most loved and quoted poets in the Urdu language today. Writing through the twilight of the Mughal era, including the reign of the last emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, who was himself a poet, Ghalib gave the ghazal a new depth of wit, melancholy and philosophical reach that still speaks to readers and listeners across generations.

He lived through turbulent times, including the upheaval of 1857 and its aftermath in Delhi and his letters and verse capture both personal struggle and the fading of a whole courtly world. His couplets on love, loss, faith and doubt are endlessly recited, set to music and discussed and his standing in Urdu literature is comparable to that of the very greatest poets in any language. The haveli in Ballimaran is where he spent his final years, which is what makes it such a resonant place to visit.

What is Mirza Ghalib Haveli?

Mirza Ghalib Haveli, popularly called Ghalib ki Haveli, is the Mughal-era mansion in Ballimaran where the poet lived during the last decade of his life, roughly from around 1860 until his death on 15 February 1869. A portion of the old haveli has been restored and turned into a small memorial museum dedicated to his life and work, a protected heritage site in the heart of Old Delhi.

The house was, by tradition, made available to Ghalib by an admiring local hakim, a physician, a reminder of the esteem in which the poet was held in his own neighbourhood. After his death the building passed through many hands and uses over the decades, serving at various times as a wedding venue, a coal store and a workshop, before its heritage value was recognised and a part of it was acquired and restored as a museum and memorial. Today it stands as a modest but deeply atmospheric tribute, the kind of place that rewards a slow, thoughtful visit rather than a quick look.

Mirza Ghalib Haveli timings and entry fee

The haveli is open Tuesday through Sunday and is closed on Mondays and entry is free for all visitors. The timings and fee at the time of writing are set out below, though opening hours at heritage sites can change, so it is worth reconfirming before a special trip.

How to reach Mirza Ghalib Haveli

Ghalib ki Haveli sits in Gali Qasim Jan in Ballimaran, one of the historic lanes off the main Chandni Chowk thoroughfare in Old Delhi. The easiest way to reach the area is by the Delhi Metro, after which a short cycle-rickshaw ride or a walk through the narrow lanes brings you to the haveli, as the lanes themselves are too narrow and busy for cars.

From

Route

Nearest metro

Chawri Bazar or Chandni Chowk station (Yellow Line)

From the metro

A short cycle-rickshaw ride or walk into Ballimaran

By road

Reach the edge of Chandni Chowk, then continue on foot or by rickshaw

Within the lanes

On foot; the gali is pedestrian in character

The lanes of Ballimaran are part of the experience, crowded, atmospheric and full of life, so give yourself a little time to find your way and enjoy the walk. A local cycle-rickshaw puller will know Ghalib ki Haveli and asking as you go is part of the charm of exploring Old Delhi. The old city is best explored on foot in any case and a guided Old Delhi walk ties the lanes and monuments together comfortably.

What to see inside the museum

The restored haveli is compact, built around a small open courtyard in the traditional Mughal brick-and-column style and its displays bring Ghalib's world vividly to life. Inside you can expect to find a mix of his writings, personal effects in replica and evocative recreations of the poet and his age.

Highlight

What you will see

The architecture

Traditional Mughal brick-and-column design around a small courtyard

The poet's words

Handwritten couplets, letters and poetry on display

Ghalib himself

A life-size figure and portraits of the poet, famously with his hookah

His attire

Replicas of his dress, such as the long kurta and distinctive cap

His tastes

Displays on his favourite foods, including kebabs and soan halwa

His contemporaries

Portraits of figures such as Bahadur Shah Zafar and the poet Zauq

The restoration used traditional Lakhori bricks in keeping with the original construction and the overall effect is intimate and authentic rather than grand. For anyone with even a passing love of poetry, history or Old Delhi, the chance to stand in the house where Ghalib wrote and spent his last years is quietly powerful and the displays, though modest, are well chosen and genuinely moving.

What to combine with your visit

Ghalib ki Haveli is small, so most visitors see it as one stop on a wider exploration of Old Delhi rather than a destination in itself and it combines beautifully with the great sights and bazaars all around it. The whole of Chandni Chowk, with its lanes, shops, food and monuments, is on the doorstep.

Within easy reach you have the mighty Red Fort, the symbolic heart of Mughal Delhi and the great Jama Masjid, along with the famous food streets and spice markets of Chandni Chowk, which together make for a full and rewarding day. A little further afield, the Mughal-era Purana Qila adds more of the city's layered history. Pairing the quiet of the haveli with the energy of the bazaars is the classic Old Delhi experience and our wider travel guides cover more of what to see across the capital.

Best time to visit

The haveli can be visited at any time of year, since the museum itself is indoors and compact, but the best time to explore Old Delhi on foot, which is really how you reach and enjoy the haveli, is during the cooler months from about October to March, when walking the lanes is comfortable and pleasant. Our best time to visit Delhi guide covers the seasons in the capital in detail.

The summer, from April to June, is very hot for walking the crowded old-city lanes, so visits are best timed for the early part of the day then, while the monsoon, from July to September, brings some relief but also wet, busy lanes. Within the day, a late-morning or afternoon visit works well, avoiding Mondays when the museum is closed and leaving time for the bazaars and food of Chandni Chowk around it.

Tips for visiting Mirza Ghalib Haveli

  • Do not visit on a Monday, when the museum is closed; any other day, 10 AM to 6 PM, is fine.

  • Reach the area by metro to Chawri Bazar or Chandni Chowk, then take a cycle-rickshaw or walk into Ballimaran.

  • Allow about 30 to 45 minutes for the haveli and keep time for Chandni Chowk around it.

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as the lanes are narrow, crowded and best explored on foot.

  • Combine it with the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and the famous food streets for a full Old Delhi day.

  • Visit in the cooler months, October to March, for the most comfortable walking.

  • Reconfirm the current timings before a special trip, as heritage-site hours can change.

What to expect

A visit to Mirza Ghalib Haveli is a quiet, reflective counterpoint to the bustle of Old Delhi, a small restored mansion where the greatest poet of 19th-century Delhi spent his final years, now a free and atmospheric little museum. You can expect handwritten couplets and letters, a life-size figure of the poet with his hookah, replicas of his dress, displays on his tastes and times and the traditional brick-and-column architecture around a small courtyard, all within the historic lane of Gali Qasim Jan in Ballimaran.

As an attraction it is modest in scale but rich in feeling and it rewards visitors who come with a little curiosity about Ghalib, his verse and the fading Mughal world he wrote about. Combined with the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and the lanes and food of Chandni Chowk all around it, the haveli makes a memorable and meaningful part of any day spent exploring the old heart of Delhi.
