Phoolon Wali Holi, the Flower Holi at Vrindavan's Shri Banke Bihari Temple, is one of the most beautiful festivals in India and in 2027 it falls on Saturday, 20 March, on the sacred day of Rangbharni Ekadashi. For a brief, magical window during the morning darshan, roughly 9:00 to 10:00 AM, the temple priests shower tonnes of fresh flower petals over the devotees below, marking the moment Banke Bihari himself begins to play Holi. It is gentle and devotional, with no wet or chemical colours and it opens the great Braj Holi season. Vrindavan lies about 180 km from Delhi, an easy half-day drive, so it makes a wonderful trip. This guide covers the date, the timing, what happens, how to reach it and the wider Braj Holi calendar. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans the trip.
I was born in Delhi and in 11 years planning journeys across the region for Experience My India I have sent many travellers down to Vrindavan for the flower Holi. It is short, crowded and utterly unforgettable and a little planning makes all the difference. Here is everything you need to know.

What is Phoolon Wali Holi?
Phoolon Wali Holi, literally the Holi of flowers, is a unique celebration held at the Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan, the town of Lord Krishna's childhood. Rather than the wet colours of the main Holi, the priests shower the gathered devotees with mountains of fresh flower petals, turning the temple hall into a fragrant, joyful storm of colour. It is held on Rangbharni Ekadashi, the day believed to mark the very beginning of Holi at the temple and across Braj, which makes it both exquisitely beautiful and deeply auspicious. For many, it is the most moving of all the Braj Holis.
Phoolon Wali Holi 2027 date and timing
In 2027, Phoolon Wali Holi falls on Saturday, 20 March, on Rangbharni Ekadashi, the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of the month of Phalguna. The flower shower is a brief ritual held during the morning darshan, roughly between 9:00 and 10:00 AM and it lasts only about 20 to 30 minutes. Because the date follows the Hindu lunar calendar, it shifts each year and is set by the temple trust, usually falling in March. The short window and the huge crowds mean timing your arrival is everything.
What happens at the flower Holi
As the darshan begins, the priests climb to the upper galleries of the temple and begin flinging tonnes of fresh petals, marigold, rose and jasmine, down onto the devotees packed into the hall below. The air fills with colour and fragrance, with devotional singing, drums and cries of joy, as Banke Bihari is believed to play Holi with his devotees. Unlike the main Rangwali Holi, no wet or chemical colours are used in this ritual, so it is gentle and family-friendly, though intensely crowded. The whole spectacle is brief but overwhelming, a few minutes that stay with you for life.
How to reach Vrindavan from Delhi
Vrindavan is about 180 km from Delhi and takes three to three and a half hours by road, mostly on the smooth Yamuna Expressway, which makes driving the easiest option and lets you time your arrival for the early morning. By train, take a service to Mathura Junction, about two to three hours from Delhi, then a taxi or local transport for the final 14 km to Vrindavan. Frequent buses also run from Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan. Our Delhi Agra Mathura map shows exactly how the corridor connects. Note that Banke Bihari Temple sits deep in Vrindavan's narrow old-town lanes, which are closed to vehicles, so you will park a little away and walk the last stretch and during Holi you should arrive several hours early as the lanes and the temple fill up fast.
The wider Braj Holi 2027 calendar
Phoolon Wali Holi is the jewel of a week-long Braj Holi season, when each town celebrates on its own day. Many visitors pair the flower Holi with the famous stick Holi of Barsana and the main day of colour. Here is the 2027 calendar.
Date | Event | Place |
15 March | Laddu Holi | Barsana |
16 March | Lathmar Holi | Barsana |
17 March | Lathmar Holi | Nandgaon |
19 March | Chhadi Mar Holi | Gokul |
20 March | Phoolon Wali Holi | Vrindavan (Banke Bihari) |
21 March | Holika Dahan | across Braj |
22 March | Rangwali Holi (main) | Mathura and Vrindavan |
23 March | Dauji Huranga | Baldeo |
Village dates such as the Barsana and Nandgaon Lathmar Holi are fixed by the temple trusts and can shift slightly, while Holika Dahan on 21 March and the main Rangwali Holi on 22 March are the firm, nationally observed dates.
Tips for attending Phoolon Wali Holi
A few things make the day far easier. Arrive at the temple hours before the shower, ideally by dawn, as the courtyard and the lanes fill rapidly and entry can close once it is full. There are no VIP passes or special tickets for this ritual, so everyone enters together. Wear old, comfortable clothes and closed shoes you can walk in, carry as little as possible since there is no room for bags and keep phones and valuables secured against the crush. Go with patience and a calm group, keep children and elders close and remember this is a temple, so dress modestly. Booking a car and a local guide who knows the lanes takes most of the stress out of the morning.
Combining with Mathura and Agra
A flower-Holi trip pairs naturally with the rest of Braj and beyond. Vrindavan and neighbouring Mathura, Krishna's birthplace, are full of temples and ghats, covered in our places to visit in Mathura guide and Agra with the Taj Mahal is only about 60 km further on, so many travellers add it using our Agra places of interest guide. If you enjoy planning around festivals, our Diwali 2026 in India guide covers another of the country's great celebrations.
Where to stay and best time to go
Accommodation in Vrindavan and Mathura fills months ahead for Holi, so book well in advance, ideally by the end of 2026 for a March 2027 trip; our where to stay in Mathura guide helps you choose a base. Most visitors stay in Vrindavan or Mathura and travel out to Barsana and Nandgaon for the earlier Holis. The season is pleasant in March, warm by day and cool in the mornings, so light cottons with a layer for the early start work well.
