Delhi Agra Mathura Map

Quick Answer

Quick Read 3+ Reviews

On the map, Delhi, Mathura and Agra sit almost in a straight line along the Yamuna Expressway, with Mathura the midpoint. Delhi to Agra is about 230 km, Delhi to Mathura about 160 km, and Mathura to Agra just 58 km.

If you picture a Delhi, Agra and Mathura map, the three cities do not form a wide triangle so much as a near-straight corridor running south from Delhi, with Mathura sitting almost exactly in the middle and Agra at the far end. The single road that ties them together is the Yamuna Expressway, which makes the whole route fast and simple: Delhi to Agra is about 230 km, Delhi to Mathura about 160 km, and the short hop from Mathura down to Agra is just 58 km. This guide lays out every distance, the route leg by leg, and the smartest order to see all three.

I was born in Delhi, and in 11 years running this exact corridor for Experience My India I have driven it in every direction. It is one of the easiest routes in North India to combine, because Mathura falls right on the way between Delhi and Agra rather than off to one side. Here is how the map works and how to travel it well.

How Delhi, Agra and Mathura sit on the map

Delhi is at the top, in the north. Agra lies about 230 km to the south, and Mathura sits between the two, roughly 160 km south of Delhi and only about 58 km north of Agra. Because all three line up along the same corridor, you are never doubling back: you simply travel south, stopping at Mathura on the way to or from Agra. Vrindavan, Mathura's twin town, is a short 13 km further, so the two Braj towns are usually seen together.

This is the detail most maps miss. Delhi, Agra and Mathura are often lumped in with the Golden Triangle, but geographically they are not a triangle at all; they are a line. That is good news for your itinerary, because it means the three fit into one clean run rather than three separate journeys.

Delhi, Agra and Mathura distances

Here are the road distances and typical drive times between each pair of points. Distances shift a little with your exact start and end address, and drive times depend on traffic, but these are the figures to plan around.

The Yamuna Expressway, the road that links them

The Yamuna Expressway is the spine of this map. It is a modern six-lane, 165 km highway running from Greater Noida, on Delhi's southern edge, down to Agra, and it is often called the Taj Expressway. It is the fastest way to cover the corridor, with dedicated exits for Mathura and Vrindavan partway along, so you can peel off for the Braj towns and rejoin for Agra. FASTag is required for the toll, fuel and rest stops are limited, so top up before you set off, and the speed limit for cars is capped and camera-enforced, usually around 100 km per hour.

The route, leg by leg

Delhi to Mathura

From Delhi, you join the Yamuna Expressway near Greater Noida and run south for about 160 km, reaching Mathura in roughly two and a half to three hours depending on where in Delhi you start. Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna, and the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple and the riverside Vishram Ghat are its heart, with Vrindavan and its many temples a short ride beyond.

Mathura to Agra

This is the shortest leg, about 58 km and an hour to an hour and a half, usually along NH 44. It is an easy, direct stretch, which is why so many travellers break the Delhi to Agra drive at Mathura for a few hours of temples and the famous Mathura peda before carrying on to the Taj.

Delhi to Agra direct

If you skip Mathura, Delhi to Agra is about 230 km and three to three and a half hours straight down the expressway. For the timing of your Taj Mahal visit once you arrive, see our guide to the best time to visit Taj Mahal Agra, since an early start from Delhi is what puts you at the monument for sunrise.

Mathura to Vrindavan

Vrindavan sits just 13 km from Mathura, a 30 to 45 minute hop, though the last stretch into Vrindavan's old lanes is slow and the innermost temples are reached on foot or by e-rickshaw. Most visitors see Mathura first and Vrindavan second, which flows better, especially at weekends.

The best way to see Delhi, Agra and Mathura together

Because the three line up, the neatest plan is Delhi to Mathura to Agra in that order: leave Delhi in the morning, spend the middle of the day in Mathura and Vrindavan, then continue the short leg to Agra by evening, ready for a sunrise at the Taj the next day. Two to three days covers it comfortably. This corridor also slots neatly onto the classic circuit, so if you are adding the Pink City afterwards, our Golden Triangle tour itinerary and our Agra to Jaipur road trip guide carry the onward journey.

How to travel the route

A private car with a driver is the most comfortable way to do this corridor, because it lets you stop at Mathura and Vrindavan on your own schedule and reach Agra in time for sunrise, which fixed transport cannot. Trains also link Delhi, Mathura and Agra well, with Mathura Junction a useful rail hub, and buses run frequently along the route. For a trip that weaves in the temples and the Taj without the logistics, a car is worth it.

Travel tips for the route

A few things keep this drive smooth. Keep FAS-Tag topped up for the expressway toll, and refuel before you join, since stops are limited. Start early from Delhi to give yourself unhurried time in Mathura and still reach Agra by evening. Mathura and Vrindavan get very busy at weekends and during Holi and Janmashtami, so plan darshan around the quieter hours, and remember the inner temple lanes are walked, not driven. Carry water and small cash for the temple towns, and dress modestly at the shrines.
