Quick Answer
To plan a Golden Triangle tour with Amritsar, add the holy city and its Golden Temple as a flight or fast-train trip from Delhi, before or after the circuit, over a day or two. See the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the Wagah border. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans these trips.
Adding Amritsar to the classic Golden Triangle is a wonderful and popular way to bring in the spiritual and cultural soul of Punjab, pairing the grand Mughal and Rajput splendour of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur with the serene, gleaming beauty of the Golden Temple. Amritsar lies to the northwest, in Punjab and is reached quickly by a short flight or a fast train from Delhi, so it fits neatly and easily onto the trip. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages explains exactly how to plan a Golden Triangle tour with Amritsar, from the route to the Golden Temple, ideal as an extension to a Golden Triangle tour.
I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years guiding the Golden Triangle for Experience My India I have planned many trips extending it northwest to Amritsar and the serene beauty of the Golden Temple. Here is the clear, practical guide.

What is the Golden Triangle with Amritsar?
The Golden Triangle is India's classic and most popular tourist circuit, linking Delhi, the historic capital; Agra, home of the incomparable Taj Mahal; and Jaipur, the Pink City of Rajasthan, a perfect introduction to India's rich Mughal and Rajput heritage of forts, tombs and palaces.
Amritsar, in the state of Punjab in India's northwest, close to the border with Pakistan, is the holiest city of Sikhism and home to the magnificent Golden Temple, one of India's most beautiful, serene and moving sights. Adding it to the Golden Triangle blends the grand Mughal and Rajput monuments of the north with the serenity, warmth and living faith of the Golden Temple, along with the deeply moving Jallianwala Bagh and the famous, rousing Wagah border ceremony, for a richer, more varied and altogether more memorable trip through the many faces of India.
Why add Amritsar to the Golden Triangle?
Amritsar brings a beautiful, uplifting spiritual and cultural dimension to the Golden Triangle, quite different from the forts and palaces:
The Golden Temple: the serene, gleaming golden shrine sitting in its still, mirror-like sacred pool is one of the most beautiful, peaceful and moving places in all of India, open freely and warmly to everyone of every faith and reason enough in itself to make the journey.
Sikh heritage and warmth: Amritsar offers a warm, genuine and welcoming window into the Sikh faith and the vibrant, generous Punjabi culture, above all through the extraordinarily vast free community kitchen, the langar, that feeds all who come as equals, side by side.
History and the border: the deeply moving Jallianwala Bagh memorial and the dramatic, rousing, patriotic Wagah border ceremony together add powerful, unforgettable history and spectacle to any visit to the city.
Wonderful food: Amritsar is famous right across the whole country for its hearty, buttery, richly flavoured Punjabi food and for very many visitors the eating is very nearly as much a highlight of the trip as the sights themselves.
For anyone wanting spirituality, history, culture and wonderful food alongside the great monuments, Amritsar is a superb, warm and deeply rewarding addition to the trip and one that very many travellers come away describing as an unexpected highlight of their whole time in India.
How to get to Amritsar
Amritsar lies about 450 km northwest of the Golden Triangle, out in Punjab, so it is reached from Delhi by air or fast train rather than driven to as part of the compact city circuit:
By flight: the quickest and most popular option, a short, direct flight of around an hour from Delhi to Amritsar, which has its own well-connected international airport. Most trips simply fly to Amritsar from Delhi, either before or after the main Golden Triangle circuit.
By fast train: an excellent and scenic alternative, a fast train such as the Shatabdi Express from Delhi to Amritsar in around six hours, comfortable, restful and a genuinely popular and characterful way to make the trip across the Punjab plains.
By road: driving the whole way is possible, but long, at around seven to eight hours each way, so flying or taking the fast train is far more sensible and time-saving for this leg of the trip.
Because of the distance, flying or taking the fast train is what we usually recommend, added simply as a leg out of and back into Delhi, as our Golden Triangle with Varanasi guide covers another such fly-in extension for comparison, while our Golden Triangle with Ranthambore and Golden Triangle with Rishikesh and Haridwar guides cover nearer road-and-rail extensions.
A suggested itinerary
Amritsar is usually added from Delhi, either before or after the main Golden Triangle circuit, since it lies off to the northwest. Here is a classic, well-tested outline that works well:
Days 1 to 2, Delhi: arrive and explore the capital at leisure, both Old and New Delhi and their great historic landmarks.
Day 3, Agra: drive to Agra to see the magnificent Taj Mahal, ideally at sunrise for the softest light and the mighty Agra Fort.
Day 4, Agra to Jaipur: drive on to Jaipur, stopping at the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri on the way.
Days 5 to 6, Jaipur: explore the vibrant Pink City, the majestic Amber Fort, the grand City Palace, the Hawa Mahal and the colourful bazaars.
Day 7, fly or train to Amritsar: travel from Jaipur, usually via Delhi, to Amritsar by flight or fast train and in the evening see the Golden Temple, beautifully and serenely lit against the night sky.
Day 8, Amritsar: visit the Golden Temple again by day, walk quietly around the pool, then see Jallianwala Bagh and the dramatic Wagah border ceremony in the evening, before flying back to Delhi to depart.
The city can equally well be visited at the very start of the trip, before the Golden Triangle, flying in and out of Delhi and we always tailor the plan carefully to your interests and pace.
The Golden Temple
The Golden Temple or Harmandir Sahib, is the spiritual heart of Amritsar and the holiest shrine of Sikhism and quite simply one of the most beautiful, serene and moving places in all of India. The gleaming gold-covered temple sits in the middle of a great, still, sacred pool, the Amrit Sarovar or pool of nectar, from which the city itself takes its name, reached by a long marble causeway and reflected shimmering and doubled in the calm water around it.
Open freely to people of all faiths, backgrounds and nations, it is a place of profound peace, devotion, dignity and warm welcome and it is especially magical at dawn, when the light is soft and when floodlit against the dark sky at night. At its very heart, in spirit, is the langar, the vast free community kitchen that serves a simple, wholesome vegetarian meal to tens of thousands of visitors every single day, seated together on the floor as equals regardless of faith, wealth or status, one of the largest free kitchens anywhere in the world and a beautiful, humbling expression of the core Sikh values of equality, humility and selfless service. Visiting the Golden Temple, walking slowly around the pool, sitting quietly by the water listening to the hymns and perhaps sharing in the langar, is a genuinely moving experience and the undoubted highlight of any trip to Amritsar.
What else to see in Amritsar
Beyond the Golden Temple, which is the heart of any visit, Amritsar has a good deal more to see, experience and taste, blending history, faith and Punjabi flavour:
Jallianwala Bagh: the poignant memorial garden right beside the Golden Temple, marking the tragic events of 1919, now a quiet, dignified and beautifully kept place of national remembrance and reflection, thoughtfully preserved and important to understanding the history of the region and the freedom struggle.
The Wagah border ceremony: the dramatic, theatrical daily flag-lowering or Beating Retreat, ceremony at the Attari-Wagah border with Pakistan, about 30 km from the city, a rousing spectacle of high-stepping marching, booming commands, patriotism and cheering, flag-waving crowds on both sides each evening at sunset, a real experience.
The Partition Museum: a moving and thoughtfully curated museum housed in the old town hall, telling the deeply human story of the 1947 Partition through personal accounts, letters and objects, important and affecting for understanding the shared history of the whole region.
The food: Amritsar is famous right across India for its hearty, buttery, delicious Punjabi cuisine, from the stuffed local Amritsari kulcha and chole to thick creamy lassi, tandoori dishes, crisp fried fish and rich, generous street food, all of it a genuine culinary highlight and a joy of any visit to the city.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Amritsar, as with the whole Golden Triangle, is the cool season, October to March, when the weather is pleasant and comfortable for the temple, the sights and the open-air Wagah border ceremony, as our best time to visit North India guide explains in detail for the wider region.
The winters, from December to February, can be genuinely cold and occasionally foggy, which can affect flights and trains, while summers, from April to June, are hot on the Punjab plains, so the cool but not freezing months either side are ideal. Special times worth planning around include the great Sikh festivals, above all the harvest festival of Baisakhi in April and Guru Nanak's birthday or Gurpurab, usually in November and the wonderfully illuminated Golden Temple at Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas, when the whole complex glows with lamps and fireworks, spectacular but very crowded. For a comfortable, relaxed visit overall, October to March remains much the best window.
Tips for planning the trip
Add Amritsar from Delhi by a short flight or a fast train, not a long seven-to-eight-hour drive.
Allow at least a full day and ideally two, for the Golden Temple and the other sights.
At the Golden Temple, cover your head, remove your shoes, wash your feet and dress and behave respectfully.
Visit the Golden Temple both by day and when floodlit in the evening, for two very different moods.
Reach the Wagah border ceremony early, as it draws large, enthusiastic crowds each evening at sunset.
Do not miss the famous Amritsari food and visit October to March for the most comfortable weather.
