About the Jagdish Temple

The Jagdish Temple is the largest and most famous temple in the old city of Udaipur and one of the great landmarks of the City of Lakes. Rising majestically in the heart of the historic centre, just outside the City Palace, it has been a vibrant centre of worship and spiritual life for well over three centuries and remains a living, bustling temple filled with daily devotion.

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here in the form of Jagannath Rai, the lord of the universe, the temple is both a magnificent work of architecture and a deeply revered place of pilgrimage. For visitors to Udaipur, it offers a wonderful glimpse into the religious heart of the city and its central location makes it an easy and natural part of any old-city visit.

The history of the Jagdish Temple

The Jagdish Temple was commissioned and built in the year 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh I, the ruler of Mewar and it stands as one of the great architectural achievements of his reign. Building such a grand temple was a major undertaking and it is said to have cost around 1.5 million rupees at the time, an enormous sum in that age, reflecting the importance placed upon it.

The temple was originally known as Jagannath Rai, after the form of Vishnu to whom it is dedicated and over time it came to be known more commonly and affectionately as Jagdish-ji, the name by which it is known today. For more than three hundred and seventy years it has stood at the heart of Udaipur's old city, a steadfast centre of faith through the centuries of Mewar history.

The architecture of the Jagdish Temple

The Jagdish Temple is a magnificent example of temple architecture, built in the Indo-Aryan style, also known as the Maru-Gurjara style and constructed according to the principles of Vastushastra, the traditional Indian science of architecture. Standing about 79 feet tall across three storeys, it rises impressively above the surrounding old city, its tall, intricately carved spire a landmark visible from around the area.

The approach to the temple is one of its most striking features. A flight of 32 marble steps leads up to the temple, flanked by two large carved stone elephants that stand guard at the entrance, a grand and welcoming sight. At the top, a brass image of Garuda, the divine eagle and the mount of Lord Vishnu, stands facing the sanctum, as is traditional. Inside and around the temple, the artistry continues: the first two floors each feature some 50 intricately carved pillars and the walls and spire are richly adorned with beautiful carvings of figures, dancers, musicians and divine beings, a feast of detail for the eye. The whole structure is a wonderful display of the skill of the craftsmen of Mewar.

The main deity and the shrines

At the heart of the temple, in the main sanctum, is the revered principal deity: a beautiful four-armed idol of Lord Vishnu, carved from a single piece of black stone. This striking black-stone image of Jagannath Rai is the focus of the temple's worship and devotion and drawing darshan or sight, of the deity is the heart of a visit for the faithful.

Encircling the main shrine are four smaller temples, each dedicated to a different deity: Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, the Goddess Shakti and the Sun God, Surya. Together with the central shrine of Vishnu, these make the temple complex a complete and harmonious place of worship, honouring several of the great deities of the Hindu faith in one sacred space. Walking around the complex to see each of these shrines is part of the traditional experience of visiting the temple.

Jagdish Temple timings

The Jagdish Temple is open to visitors and devotees every day, with morning and evening darshan sessions and a break in the middle of the day, as is common for temples. The exact hours vary a little by season.

Season

Morning

Evening

Summer

5:00 AM to 2:30 PM

4:00 PM to 10:30 PM

Winter

5:30 AM to 2:30 PM

4:00 PM to 10:00 PM

In some sources the general darshan hours are given a little differently, at around 4:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, so if you are visiting for a particular aarti or at the edges of the day, it is worth reconfirming the current timings locally. The temple is busiest and most atmospheric during the aarti times, when the prayers and devotion fill the air.

Best of all, entry to the Jagdish Temple is completely free, as it is a living place of worship, so anyone is welcome to step in, admire the architecture and share in the atmosphere of devotion.

The spiritual life of the temple

The Jagdish Temple is not a museum but a vibrant, living temple and it serves as one of the great centres of spiritual life in Udaipur. Throughout the day and especially at the aarti times, the temple fills with devotees, with the sound of bells, prayers and devotional music and with the colour and energy of living worship. To witness an aarti here is a moving and memorable experience, a window into the daily faith of the city.

The temple also hosts important annual events and festivals, most notably the Rath Yatra, the grand chariot festival, which brings the temple's devotion out into the streets in a joyful procession. Visiting during one of these occasions, if your timing allows, is a special experience, though the temple is rewarding and atmospheric at any time of year.

Location and how to reach the Jagdish Temple

The Jagdish Temple stands at Jagdish Chowk in the Silawatwari area of the old city of Udaipur, right in the historic heart of the city and extremely close to its other great attractions. It lies just about 150 to 200 metres from the City Palace, a short five-minute walk from the palace's Bara Pol gate, around 250 metres from the shores of beautiful Lake Pichola and about 500 metres from the Bagore Ki Haveli at Gangaur Ghat. This central position makes it wonderfully easy to combine the temple with the other sights of the old city.

Because it is so central and the old city is pedestrian-friendly, the easiest way to reach the temple is simply on foot, walking through the atmospheric lanes from the City Palace or Lake Pichola. You can also reach it by auto-rickshaw or taxi, which can drop you close to Jagdish Chowk, though the old-city traffic can be busy at peak times, so the final stretch is often best on foot. For those arriving from further afield, the Udaipur railway station is about 3.5 kilometres away and the Maharana Pratap Airport, the city's airport, is roughly 20 to 23 kilometres away.

The temple pairs naturally with the adjoining City Palace, as our City Palace Udaipur guide and timings covers that magnificent palace and with the lakeside sights nearby, as our best lakes of Udaipur guide covers Lake Pichola and the lakes of the city. It is one of the essential stops on any visit, as our things to do in Udaipur guide covers the full range of sights and experiences in the City of Lakes.

The best time to visit

The Jagdish Temple can be visited at any time of year, but the best time to enjoy Udaipur as a whole and to walk its old city in comfort, is the cool season from about October to March, when the weather is pleasant for exploring on foot. This is the peak season for Rajasthan travel, as our best time to visit Rajasthan guide covers the seasons across the state.

Within the day, visiting during one of the aarti times is especially rewarding, when the temple is at its most vibrant and atmospheric. Early morning is a lovely, peaceful time to visit, while the evening aarti is full of energy and devotion. The temple combines beautifully with the City Palace right next door, making an easy and rich morning or afternoon in the old city.

How to reach Udaipur and plan your visit

Udaipur is well connected and easy to reach, with its own airport and good road and rail links. By road, it is reached from Delhi, as our Delhi to Udaipur distance guide covers that journey and from Jaipur, as our Jaipur to Udaipur distance guide covers that drive.

A visit to the Jagdish Temple takes only a short while, so it is easily combined with the City Palace and the old city into a wonderful half-day and it fits beautifully into a wider Udaipur and Rajasthan trip, as our one week North India itinerary guide maps out a route that can be extended to include the City of Lakes.
