Ways to travel from Jaipur to Chittorgarh

Chittorgarh is well connected from Jaipur and there are a few good ways to make the journey:

  • By car: the most flexible and comfortable option, a drive of around 5 to 5.5 hours on NH48, letting you explore the vast fort entirely at your own pace and stop along the way at Ajmer or Pushkar, as a long day or, better, an overnight.

  • By train: Chittorgarh has a well-connected railway junction, reached by several trains from Jaipur, a restful, economical and scenic way to cover the distance without the drive.

  • Via Udaipur: Chittorgarh lies close to the beautiful Lake City of Udaipur, only about 115 km away, so very many travellers conveniently combine the two or reach Chittorgarh as part of a wider southern Rajasthan trip.

For most travellers, a private car is the easiest and most flexible way, especially to explore the vast fort, while the train is a good, restful alternative and pairing with Udaipur makes a rewarding trip.

About Chittorgarh: the mighty fort of Mewar

Chittorgarh or Chittor, is dominated by its magnificent fort, one of the largest and grandest in all of India, spread majestically across a long, high hill rising above the town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the celebrated Hill Forts of Rajasthan. For many centuries it was the proud and powerful capital of the kingdom of Mewar, one of the greatest and most fiercely independent of all the Rajput states, before the capital was eventually moved south to the safer haven of Udaipur.

The fort is a vast, sprawling complex, covering a huge area of several square kilometres atop its flat hill and reached by a long, steep, winding road that climbs up through a series of seven great fortified gateways. Within its mighty walls lie palaces, soaring towers, temples, tanks, ponds and evocative ruins, all telling the long and often deeply stirring story of Mewar. Above all, Chittorgarh stands as a powerful and moving symbol of Rajput valour, honour and sacrifice, its history rich with tales of legendary rulers, warriors, poets and queens and it is a genuinely atmospheric and unforgettable place to visit.

What to see at Chittorgarh Fort

The great fort holds many remarkable sights and deserves several unhurried hours:

  • Vijay Stambh: the magnificent Tower of Victory, a soaring nine-storey sandstone-and-marble tower built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century to commemorate a great military victory, covered from top to bottom in intricate sculpture and carving of gods and scenes and the iconic landmark of Chittorgarh, which you can climb by its narrow inner stairway for fine views over the whole fort.

  • Rana Kumbha Palace: the oldest and most extensive palace within the fort, now a beautiful, evocative ruin of open courtyards, chambers, balconies and dark underground cellars, deeply steeped in the long history of Mewar.

  • Padmini Palace: the graceful white palace set beside a tranquil lotus pool, famously associated with the legendary queen Rani Padmini, a serene, storied and much-visited spot within the fort walls.

  • Kirti Stambh: the elegant, slender, older Tower of Fame, a beautifully carved seven-storey Jain tower dedicated to Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankara, standing gracefully apart from the larger Vijay Stambh.

  • The Meera Temple: the lovely, serene temple associated with Meera Bai, the great mystic poet and devoted follower of Krishna, along with the adjacent larger Kumbha Shyam temple, together a place of quiet devotion and one of the fort's most beloved and visited sites.

  • The gates, ponds and ruins: the series of seven great fortified gateways or pols, along the long, steep ascent, the sacred Gaumukh Reservoir fed by a natural cow-mouth spring and the many other temples, palaces, tanks and evocative ruins scattered across the vast hilltop all richly reward slow, unhurried exploration.

A good local guide brings the fort's long, rich history and its many stirring legends vividly to life as you explore and is very well worth having for a visit of this kind.

The history and legends of Chittorgarh

Chittorgarh's long history is one of the most stirring and revered in all of Rajasthan, bound up with the pride, courage, honour and sacrifice of the Rajputs of Mewar. Over the centuries the great fort withstood and at times fell in, several famous sieges and its story is remembered with the deepest honour and reverence across Rajasthan to this day, a byword for valour.

The fort is associated with some of the most legendary and beloved figures in Rajput history and lore: Rani Padmini, the queen whose beauty, dignity and courage became the stuff of enduring legend; Meera Bai, the mystic poet-saint and devoted follower of Krishna, whose heartfelt devotional songs are still sung with love across India today; and the great rulers and warriors of Mewar, including the illustrious line that later produced Maharana Pratap. These stirring stories of valour, devotion and sacrifice give Chittorgarh a profound emotional and historical resonance and are told locally with great pride and feeling. To visit the fort, with its towers, palaces and ruins spread grandly across the long hilltop, is to walk through this living, breathing history.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Chittorgarh is October to March, when the weather is cool and pleasant, ideal for exploring the vast fort on foot, as our best time to visit North India guide explains for the wider region.

The winter months, from November to February, are the most comfortable of all and lovely for wandering the vast fort, climbing its towers and taking in its long views. Summers, from April to June, are very hot in this part of Rajasthan, making the exposed, sprawling hilltop fort tiring and uncomfortable to explore on foot, so they are best avoided. The monsoon, from July to September, brings some welcome rain and a flush of greenery to the surrounding countryside. For a comfortable, rewarding visit to this large hilltop fort, the cool season, October to March, is much the best time of year.

Combining Chittorgarh with your trip

Chittorgarh combines beautifully with a wider Rajasthan journey:

  • With Udaipur: the beautiful, romantic Lake City of Udaipur is only about 115 km away, roughly two hours by road, so the two are very often visited together, with Udaipur making a lovely base, as our Jaipur to Udaipur distance guide covers the route into southern Rajasthan.

  • On a Rajasthan trip: Chittorgarh sits well on a longer southern Rajasthan itinerary, alongside Udaipur, Nathdwara and more, as our places to visit in Rajasthan from Delhi guide describes the wider state and its cities.

  • As a short trip from Jaipur: Chittorgarh makes a rewarding heritage and history escape from Jaipur in its own right, as our best places for a 3-day trip from Jaipur guide covers more short trips.

And for the same fort from the capital, our Delhi to Chittorgarh distance guide covers that route, while our things to do in Jaipur guide covers the Pink City before you set off.

I booked my Jaipur to Chittorgarh trip with Experience My India after reading their related travel guide, and the arrangements were excellent. Abhay ji helped us plan the route via NH48, arranged a comfortable car and suggested suitable timings so we could reach the fort without rushing. Our hotel stay was also well arranged, and the local guide made the history of Vijay Stambh, Rana Kumbha Palace and Padmini Palace much easier to understand.
