Delhi to Chittorgarh is about 593 km and takes roughly 10 hours by road via NE4, the new Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, across the plains of Rajasthan.

How far is Chittorgarh to Delhi by road?

Chittorgarh to Delhi is about 590 km by the fastest route, taking a similar long time in reverse.

Either way, plan for around 10 hours of driving across Rajasthan, mostly on the fast NE4 expressway, so this is very much an overnight or, better, a multi-day trip through Rajasthan rather than anything that can be done in a single day.

What is the best route from Delhi to Chittorgarh?

The best and fastest routes from Delhi to Chittorgarh run around 593 to 603 km and take about 10 hours, mostly on the new NE4, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which has made the journey quicker than before. The routes via NH48, the older highway, are a similar distance but can be slower.

Ways to travel from Delhi to Chittorgarh

Given the long distance, there are several good ways to make the journey:

• By train: a very practical and comfortable option, as Chittorgarh has its own well-connected railway station right in the city, with trains from Delhi, including overnight services that cover the long distance restfully while you sleep, arriving ready to explore.

• By road: by private car or bus, taking around 10 hours, best broken over two days with an overnight at Jaipur, making a fuller and more relaxed Rajasthan trip of it rather than one very long day at the wheel.

• By air and road: you can fly to Udaipur airport, about 90 to 115 km away, then drive the last stretch to Chittorgarh, a good option to save a great deal of time on the long journey.

For most travellers from Delhi, the train or flying to Udaipur and driving on, is far more comfortable and time-saving than driving the whole long way, while a multi-day road trip broken at Jaipur suits those who want to see more of Rajasthan and its great cities along the way.

About Chittorgarh: the mighty fort city

Chittorgarh or Chittor, is a historic city in southern Rajasthan, in the Mewar region, famous above all for its magnificent Chittorgarh Fort, one of the largest forts in India and one of the grandest in all of Asia. Spread across a high, flat-topped hill rising some 180 metres above the plains and covering a vast area, the fort was for centuries the proud capital of the powerful kingdom of Mewar, before the capital was moved to the safer, lake-ringed Udaipur.

Chittorgarh Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan and above all a great and enduring symbol of Rajput courage, honour and sacrifice, its long history marked by heroic and tragic defences against powerful invaders. To visit it is to walk through some of the most stirring and emotional history in India, among grand ruined palaces, soaring towers, ancient temples and long ramparts spread over the huge hilltop. For anyone with an interest in the history, culture and legends of Rajasthan and the Rajputs, Chittorgarh is a deeply moving, evocative and unforgettable destination, quite unlike the palace cities.

The Chittorgarh Fort and its monuments

The vast Chittorgarh Fort, rising high above the city, is the reason to make the journey and it holds many magnificent monuments within its long walls:

• The Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory): the fort's iconic, towering nine-storey victory tower, built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century to mark a great military victory, covered in intricate carvings inside and out and climbable up a narrow inner stair for fine views over the whole fort, the great symbol of Chittorgarh.

• The Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame): an elegant, older seven-storey Jain tower, richly decorated with sculpted figures of the Jain saints, a beautiful and striking companion to the taller Vijay Stambh nearby.

• Rana Kumbha Palace: the grand, atmospheric ruined palace of the Mewar rulers, the oldest and one of the most important and evocative structures in the whole fort, with its great walls, courtyards, balconies and stables, deeply steeped in the fort's history.

• Padmini Palace: the graceful white palace associated with the legendary queen Rani Padmini, set beside a serene lotus pool in which, by tradition, her reflection was once glimpsed, a beautiful and famous spot woven into the fort's legend.

• The temples: the Meera Temple and the adjacent Kumbha Shyam Temple, linked to the beloved poet-saint Meera Bai, along with the ancient Kalika Mata Temple, among several others across the fort.

• The gates and reservoirs: the fort's seven great fortified gateways or pols, guarding the long approach up the hill and its many historic water reservoirs, such as the Gaumukh Kund, spread across the vast hilltop.

The fort is enormous, covering a huge area across the hilltop, so allow plenty of time, ideally a good half-day or more, to see it properly and a knowledgeable guide brings its many layers of history, architecture and legend vividly to life as you explore. It is best explored by car within the fort walls, given its great size, stopping at each of the major monuments in turn.

The history and legends of Chittorgarh

Chittorgarh has one of the most storied, dramatic and stirring histories in all of India. As the proud capital of the kingdom of Mewar, it stood for centuries as a great stronghold of Rajput power, culture and pride and it withstood and finally fell to, several great sieges by powerful invaders over the ages, its defenders famed for choosing honour and sacrifice over surrender in the face of overwhelming odds.

The fort is bound up with some of the most famous figures and legends of Rajasthan: the legendary queen Rani Padmini, whose story of grace and courage is woven into the fort's history; the revered poet-saint Meera Bai, the great devotee of Lord Krishna, associated with its temples and her devotional songs; and the illustrious Rajput rulers of Mewar, whose lineage led on in time to the great Maharana Pratap. These deep stories of courage, devotion and sacrifice give Chittorgarh a profound, emotional resonance that sets it apart from other forts and make a visit far more than simply sightseeing. It is a place that stirs the heart, honours a proud and tragic history and stays with visitors long afterwards.

Best time to visit Chittorgarh

The best time to visit Chittorgarh is October to March, when the weather is pleasant and comfortable for exploring the vast, largely open hilltop fort on foot, without the exhausting heat. The winter is crisp and lovely, ideal for the long walks the huge fort involves.

Summers, from April to June, are very hot in this part of Rajasthan, so they are best avoided for a leisurely visit, especially given how much walking and climbing the huge open fort requires under the fierce sun. The monsoon, from July to September, brings some welcome relief and greenery to the region and the hilltop, lovely if you do not mind a little rain. For the most comfortable experience and for the long journey out from Delhi and back, aim firmly for the cool, pleasant season of October to March, which is much the best time for exploring the fort on foot.
