Mount Abu to Delhi is about 822 km by the fastest route via NE4, taking a similar long time in reverse.

Either way, this is a very long drive of around 13.5 to 16 hours, far too much for a single comfortable day, so it is best done by train, or reached via nearby Udaipur, or broken over several days as a wider road trip through Rajasthan.

What is the best route from Delhi to Mount Abu?

The best routes from Delhi to Mount Abu run around 831 to 838 km and take about 13.5 to 14.5 hours, across Rajasthan and then up the winding ghat road into the Aravalli hills. The route via the Beawar-Pindwara Road is the fastest, while the route on the new NE4, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, is a similar distance and time.

Because of the sheer distance, driving the whole way in one go is very tiring and not recommended. It is far better to break the journey over two or more days, or to travel by train, since Mount Abu sits high in the hills at the end of a winding climb from Abu Road below. Many travellers also reach Mount Abu via Udaipur, which is much closer, only a few hours away, making the beautiful Lake City a natural stop or base.

Ways to travel from Delhi to Mount Abu

Given the long distance, the way you travel matters, and there are several good options:

• By train: the most practical way from Delhi, take a train to Abu Road, the nearest railhead, about 28 km below Mount Abu at the foot of the hills, then a taxi up the scenic, winding ghat road to the hill station itself. Overnight trains cover the long distance restfully while you sleep, arriving in the morning.

• By air and road: you can fly to Udaipur airport, about 185 km away, or Ahmedabad, and then drive to Mount Abu, a good option to save time on the long journey.

• By road: by private car, best broken over two or more days, often via Jaipur and Udaipur, making a fuller Rajasthan trip of it rather than one very long drive.

For most travellers from Delhi, the train to Abu Road, or flying to Udaipur and driving, is far more sensible and comfortable than driving the whole way, while a multi-day road trip suits those wanting to see more of Rajasthan.

Reaching Mount Abu via Udaipur

Because Mount Abu is a very long way from Delhi but much closer to Udaipur, many travellers reach it via the beautiful Lake City of Udaipur. Udaipur is only a few hours' drive from Mount Abu, and is itself well connected to Delhi by train and air, making it a natural gateway and a wonderful stop or base.

About Mount Abu: the only hill station in Rajasthan

Mount Abu is a unique and special place: the only hill station in the whole vast desert state of Rajasthan, a cool, green, forested oasis rising high in the ancient Aravalli hills, at over 1,200 metres above the plains. Things to do in Mount Abu

There is a great deal to enjoy in and around Mount Abu:

• The Dilwara Temples: the world-famous Jain temples, celebrated for their breathtakingly intricate white marble carving, the single greatest highlight of Mount Abu and a masterpiece of Indian art and devotion.

• Nakki Lake: the beautiful sacred lake at the very heart of the town, ringed by wooded hills, where boating is a favourite pastime, and a lovely, atmospheric place to stroll, especially in the cool of the evening.

• Sunset Point: the famous viewpoint from which to watch the sun set gloriously over the hills and the distant plains, a magical, much-loved Mount Abu experience shared with crowds of fellow visitors each evening.

• Guru Shikhar: the highest peak of the entire Aravalli range, crowned by a small temple, with sweeping panoramic views over the hills and valleys, the roof of Rajasthan.

• Achalgarh Fort and the Achaleshwar Temple: the historic hill fort and the revered ancient Shiva temple nearby, well worth the short trip out of town.

• Toad Rock and the viewpoints: the curious, aptly named Toad Rock, Honeymoon Point and other scenic viewpoints offer fine vistas, easy walks and good photographs.

• The Brahma Kumaris centres: the peace park and the centres of the Brahma Kumaris movement, based here, draw those seeking a quiet, spiritual and meditative experience.

The Dilwara Temples

The jewel of Mount Abu, and reason enough in itself to make the long journey, is the celebrated group of Dilwara Temples, a cluster of five Jain temples built between the 11th and 13th centuries. They are famous the world over for their extraordinary, almost unbelievably intricate carving in pure white marble, ceilings, pillars, arches, doorways and panels worked into lace-like detail of astonishing delicacy and beauty, so fine that the marble seems almost translucent in places.

Widely regarded as among the very finest examples of marble carving anywhere in India, if not the world, the Dilwara temples are a breathtaking masterpiece of art, craftsmanship and devotion, and a deeply revered Jain pilgrimage site drawing devotees from across the country. Visiting them, in their serene, austere hilltop setting amid the hills, is a genuinely moving and unforgettable experience, and the single highlight of any trip to Mount Abu. Note that photography is not allowed inside the temples, and visitors should dress modestly and respect the temple rules and timings, as it remains an active and sacred place of worship.

Best time to visit Mount Abu

The best time to visit Mount Abu is the cool season, roughly October to March, when the hill weather is pleasant and comfortable, ideal for the temples, the lake and the viewpoints, and the winter is crisp and lovely. This is the peak season, and includes the colourful Winter Festival.

Being a hill station, Mount Abu is also a popular summer escape, from April to June, when it is far cooler and greener than the baking Rajasthan plains below, though it can still be pleasantly warm and is at its busiest then with holidaymakers from across the region. The monsoon, July to September, brings rain and lush greenery to the hills, and the lake and forests are at their most beautiful, lovely if you do not mind some wet weather. For most travellers, though, the cool months of October to March are the sweet spot, comfortable for sightseeing and the most pleasant time for the long journey out and back too.
