What is the best route from Jaipur to Mathura and Vrindavan?

The quickest routes use the Jaipur-Bandikui Expressway and NE4, part of the growing expressway network, which has cut the drive to around four and a half hours. Other routes run via the Agra-Jaipur road and NH21, all similar in distance.

Since Vrindavan lies only about 10 to 14 km beyond Mathura, both are usually visited together on the same trip and the drive from Jaipur is comfortable and scenic enough to enjoy. It is short enough to be done as a long day trip, though an overnight lets you experience the temples and the evening aartis without rushing. The distance is very manageable compared with the far eastern pilgrimage cities, which is part of what makes Mathura and Vrindavan such a popular and easy addition to a Rajasthan trip.

Is Mathura and Vrindavan a day trip from Jaipur?

Yes, it can be, at around four and a half hours each way, though it makes for a very full day. A dawn start from Jaipur gets you to Mathura and Vrindavan by late morning, with time for the main temples before the drive back.

That said, the twin cities truly deserve an overnight or two. There are so many temples, ghats and experiences, from the morning and evening aartis to the sweets, the boat rides and the wider Braj region, that a single rushed day only scratches the surface. Staying overnight lets you attend an evening aarti at Banke Bihari or ISKCON, see Prem Mandir lit up after dark, wake for a peaceful morning at the Yamuna and take your time among the temples rather than racing the clock. For a richer, more restful pilgrimage, plan to stay a night, ideally two if you want to explore Govardhan or Barsana as well.

Is there a train from Jaipur to Mathura?

Yes. Mathura Junction is a major railway station, well connected to Jaipur by several trains and it is the gateway to the twin cities, with Vrindavan a short taxi or auto ride away. The train is a comfortable and affordable option and Mathura is one of the best-connected stations in the region.

From Mathura Junction, local transport reaches Vrindavan and the temples easily, whether by taxi, auto or the small e-rickshaws that ply the narrow lanes. For flexibility to visit the many scattered temples across both cities and the wider Braj, though, many pilgrims prefer to drive or hire a car for the trip, which also makes the door-to-door journey from Jaipur simpler and lets you stop where you please along the way.

Where are Mathura and Vrindavan?

Mathura and Vrindavan lie in the Braj region of western Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the sacred Yamuna and together they form the heartland of Lord Krishna's story. Mathura is revered as his birthplace, the very spot where he was born in a prison cell to Devaki and Vasudeva, while Vrindavan, a short distance away, is where he spent his enchanted childhood and youth, playing his flute, tending the cows, stealing butter and dancing the raas with Radha and the gopis.

The whole region pulses with devotion to Krishna and Radha, its air filled with temple bells, bhajans and the constant call of Radhe Radhe, the greeting exchanged between everyone here. For the devout, it is one of the most sacred landscapes in India, drawing millions of pilgrims a year and for every visitor it is a vivid, joyful and often overwhelming immersion in living faith, quite different in spirit from the palaces of Rajasthan you have just left behind. Together the two cities and the wider Braj around them, tell the whole story of Krishna's life on earth.

Top temples and sights in Mathura

Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, is centred on its great temple and the Yamuna ghats:

  • Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi: the temple complex at the very birthplace of Lord Krishna, the spiritual heart of the city, built around the prison cell where he is said to have been born.

  • Dwarkadhish Temple: a grand and popular 19th century temple in the old city, richly decorated and busy with worshippers, especially around festivals.

  • Vishram Ghat: the main and most sacred of Mathura's ghats on the Yamuna, beautiful for the evening aarti, boat rides and the ritual of feeding the turtles and fish.

  • The old city: its winding lanes full of temples, ghats, sweet shops and the famous Mathura pedas, a milk sweet that pilgrims carry home.

Top temples and sights in Vrindavan

Vrindavan, where Krishna spent his childhood, is a town of a thousand temples and these are the essentials:

  • Banke Bihari Temple: the most beloved and busiest temple in Vrindavan, dedicated to a much-loved dark form of Krishna, where the curtain before the deity is drawn and closed at intervals rather than left open.

  • ISKCON Vrindavan: the beautiful Krishna Balaram Mandir, serene, welcoming and famous for its kirtans and its international community of devotees.

  • Prem Mandir: the stunning white-marble temple built by the Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat, covered in intricate carvings and spectacularly illuminated in changing colours after dark.

  • Nidhivan: the sacred, mysterious grove where Krishna is believed to dance the raas with the gopis each night and which is said to be locked and left empty after dusk.

  • Radha Raman, Radha Vallabh and more: among the countless historic shrines that fill the town, each with its own deity, story and following.

The wider Braj region

For a fuller pilgrimage, the Braj region around Mathura and Vrindavan holds more of Krishna's story:

  • Govardhan: the sacred hill Krishna is said to have lifted on his little finger to shelter the villagers from a storm, now circumambulated by pilgrims on the 21 km Govardhan Parikrama.

  • Barsana: the hilltop village of Radha, famous for its dramatic Lathmar Holi, where women playfully beat men with sticks and for the Radha Rani temple.

  • Gokul and Nandgaon: the villages of Krishna's infancy and boyhood, where he was raised in hiding and grew up, quieter and deeply atmospheric.

These add days of devotion for those who wish to explore the whole holy land of Braj.

Festivals in Mathura and Vrindavan

The twin cities are at their most magical during the great Krishna festivals:

  • Janmashtami: the birthday of Lord Krishna, celebrated with unmatched fervour at his very birthplace in Mathura and across Vrindavan, with midnight aartis, jhankis and huge crowds, covered in our Janmashtami 2026 in Delhi guide, which also touches on the Mathura-Vrindavan celebrations.

  • Holi: the festival of colours is celebrated here for over a week, including the famous Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon and the flower Holi at Banke Bihari, a spectacle like no other in India.

  • Radhashtami: the birthday of Radha, especially grand in Barsana, her village and in Vrindavan, with beautifully decorated temples.

If your visit coincides with these, expect huge, joyful crowds and an unforgettable atmosphere.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Mathura and Vrindavan is October to March, when the weather is pleasant for the temples and ghats. The festivals of Janmashtami, in August or September and Holi, in March, are the most spectacular, though also the most crowded times.

Summers, from April to June, are very hot in both Jaipur and Braj, so plan for early mornings and evenings and carry water. The monsoon brings a lush green freshness and a fuller Yamuna, a quieter time between the big festivals. Whenever you go, aim to catch a morning and an evening aarti, the most beautiful and atmospheric moments of a Vrindavan visit and give yourself unhurried time, as the temples and their crowds reward patience rather than a rush.

Combining Mathura and Vrindavan with your trip

Because Mathura and Vrindavan sit close to Agra, on the Golden Triangle route, they combine wonderfully with a wider trip. Many travellers add them to a Jaipur and Agra journey and our tourist places near Agra guide them from the Taj city, only about 60 km away. Use our things to do in Jaipur guide for the Pink City and our things to do in Agra guide for Agra on the way. Travellers from the capital will find the twin cities among the getaways in our nearby places to visit in Delhi guide and we can build the whole Krishna pilgrimage into a wider circuit within our Delhi Agra Tour Packages.

They suggested starting early, which gave us enough time to visit Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, Vishram Ghat and the main Vrindavan temples.
