Jaipur to Mount Abu is about 495 km and around 9 hours by road, a long journey best made by train to Abu Road or over a couple of days. Mount Abu, the only hill station in Rajasthan, is a cool, green oasis high in the Aravalli hills, famous for its exquisite Dilwara Jain temples, its sacred lake and its lovely sunset points. It lies far to the southwest of Jaipur, so this is a long journey, best made by train or over a couple of days rather than a single dash. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages covers the Jaipur to Mount Abu distance in both directions, the best ways to travel and what to see, ideal as a hill and Rajasthan extension to a Golden Triangle tour.
I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years arranging trips for Experience My India I have planned many journeys out to Mount Abu and the hills of Rajasthan, often reached the easier way via nearby Udaipur. Here is the clear, practical guide.

What is the best route from Jaipur to Mount Abu?
The best routes from Jaipur to Mount Abu run around 478 to 530 km and take about 9 to 9.5 hours, across Rajasthan and then up the winding ghat road into the Aravalli hills. The route via the Beawar-Pindwara Road is among the fastest, though all of them are long.
Because of the sheer distance, driving the whole way in one go is very tiring and not really recommended, being some 9 hours or more at the wheel. It is far better to break the journey over two or more days or to travel comfortably by train, since Mount Abu sits high in the hills at the end of a slow, winding climb from Abu Road below. Many travellers also sensibly reach Mount Abu via Udaipur, which is much closer to it than Jaipur, only a few hours away, making the beautiful Lake City a natural stop or base on the way, as our Jaipur to Udaipur distance guide covers the route into southern Rajasthan.
Ways to travel from Jaipur to Mount Abu
Given the long distance, there are several good ways to make the journey:
By train: the most practical way from Jaipur, take a train to Abu Road, the nearest railhead, about 28 km below Mount Abu at the foot of the hills, then a taxi up the scenic, winding ghat road to the hill station itself. Overnight and other trains cover the long distance restfully while you sleep.
By air and road: you can fly, usually via a connection, to Udaipur airport, about 185 km away and then drive to Mount Abu, a good option to save time on the long journey.
By road: by private car, best broken over two or more days, often via Udaipur, making a fuller Rajasthan trip of it rather than one very long drive.
For most travellers from Jaipur, the train to Abu Road or reaching Mount Abu via Udaipur, is far more sensible and comfortable than driving the whole way, while a multi-day road trip suits those wanting to see more of Rajasthan.
About Mount Abu: the only hill station in Rajasthan
Mount Abu is a unique and special place: the only hill station in the whole vast desert state of Rajasthan, a cool, green, forested oasis rising high in the ancient Aravalli hills, at over 1,200 metres above the plains. Wrapped around a sacred lake and surrounded by wooded hills, rocky outcrops and scenic viewpoints, it offers a wonderful, refreshing and surprising change from the heat, dust and colour of the Rajasthan plains below.
Mount Abu is at once a beloved hill station and a major spiritual centre, a rare and appealing combination. It is one of the very holiest sites in Jainism, home to the exquisite Dilwara temples that draw pilgrims from across India and it is also the spiritual headquarters of the Brahma Kumaris movement, whose peaceful centres are based here. A popular honeymoon and family getaway, a serious pilgrimage site and a quiet mountain retreat all in one, it is one of the most distinctive, varied and rewarding destinations in all of Rajasthan.
Things to do in Mount Abu
There is a great deal to enjoy in and around Mount Abu:
The Dilwara Temples: the world-famous Jain temples, celebrated for their breathtakingly intricate white marble carving, the single greatest highlight of Mount Abu and a masterpiece of Indian art and devotion.
Nakki Lake: the beautiful sacred lake at the very heart of the town, ringed by wooded hills, where boating is a favourite pastime and a lovely, atmospheric place to stroll, especially in the cool of the evening.
Sunset Point: the famous viewpoint from which to watch the sun set gloriously over the hills and the distant plains, a magical, much-loved Mount Abu experience shared with crowds of fellow visitors.
Guru Shikhar: the highest peak of the entire Aravalli range, crowned by a small temple, with sweeping panoramic views over the hills and valleys, the very roof of Rajasthan.
Achalgarh Fort and the Achaleshwar Temple: the historic hill fort and the revered ancient Shiva temple nearby, well worth the short trip out of the town.
Toad Rock and the viewpoints: the curious, aptly named Toad Rock, Honeymoon Point and other scenic viewpoints offer fine vistas, easy walks and good photographs.
The Brahma Kumaris centres: the peace park and the centres of the Brahma Kumaris movement, based here, draw those seeking a quiet, spiritual and meditative experience.
A couple of days lets you enjoy the temples, the lake, the viewpoints and the cool hill air at a relaxed pace.
The Dilwara Temples
The jewel of Mount Abu and reason enough in itself to make the long journey, is the celebrated group of Dilwara Temples, a cluster of five Jain temples built between the 11th and 13th centuries. They are famous the world over for their extraordinary, almost unbelievably intricate carving in pure white marble, ceilings, pillars, arches, doorways and panels worked into lace-like detail of astonishing delicacy and beauty, so fine that the marble seems almost translucent in places.
Widely regarded as among the very finest examples of marble carving anywhere in India, if not the world, the Dilwara temples are a breathtaking masterpiece of art, craftsmanship and devotion and a deeply revered Jain pilgrimage site drawing devotees from across the country. Visiting them, in their serene, austere hilltop setting amid the hills, is a genuinely moving and unforgettable experience and the single highlight of any trip to Mount Abu. Note that photography is not allowed inside the temples and visitors should dress modestly and respect the temple rules and timings, as it remains an active and sacred place of worship.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Mount Abu is the cool season, roughly October to March, when the hill weather is pleasant and comfortable, ideal for the temples, the lake and the viewpoints and the winter is crisp and lovely. This is the peak season and includes the colourful Winter Festival.
Being a hill station, Mount Abu is also a popular summer escape, from April to June, when it is far cooler and greener than the baking Rajasthan plains below, though it can still be pleasantly warm and is at its busiest then with holidaymakers from across the region. The monsoon, July to September, brings rain and lush greenery to the hills and the lake and forests are at their most beautiful, lovely if you do not mind some wet weather. For most travellers, though, the cool months of October to March are the sweet spot, comfortable for sightseeing and the most pleasant time for the long journey out and back too.
Combining Mount Abu with your trip
Mount Abu fits well into a wider Rajasthan journey:
Via Udaipur: The beautiful Lake City of Udaipur is much closer to Mount Abu than Jaipur is, so many travellers visit Udaipur first, then make Mount Abu a side trip or onward stop, a far easier way to reach the hills.
On a Rajasthan road trip: Mount Abu sits well on a longer Rajasthan itinerary through the south of the state, as our places to visit in Rajasthan from Delhi guide describes the wider state.
As a short escape from Jaipur: though far, Mount Abu is a rewarding hill-and-pilgrimage escape, as our best places for a 3-day trip from Jaipur guide covers more trips.
And for the same hill station from the capital, our Delhi to Mount Abu distance guide covers that route, while our things to do in Jaipur guide covers the Pink City before you set off.
