Quick Answer
Jaipur to Rishikesh is about 529 km and around 8.5 hours by road via NE4, a long journey usually routed via Delhi. Rishikesh, the yoga capital on the Ganges, is famous for its ashrams, the Ganga Aarti and white-water rafting. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans these trips.
Rishikesh, the yoga capital of the world on the banks of the sacred Ganges, is a wonderful destination of spirituality, wellness and adventure in the green Uttarakhand foothills. It lies a good way north of Jaipur, on the far side of Delhi, so this is a long journey, best made steadily over the day or broken with a stop, rather than rushed. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages covers the Jaipur to Rishikesh distance in both directions, the best routes, the ways to travel and what to see and do there, ideal as a Ganges add-on to a Golden Triangle tour.
I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years arranging trips for Experience My India I have planned many journeys from Jaipur and Rajasthan up to the sacred Ganges at Rishikesh, by road, train and flight. Here is the clear, practical guide.
Jaipur to Rishikesh at a glance
Detail | Information |
Road distance | About 529 to 555 km |
Road time | About 8.5 hours by the fastest route |
Best route | Via NE4 |
Route note | Usually via or near Delhi |
By train | Rail via Delhi to Haridwar or Rishikesh |
By air | Fly to Dehradun, then a short drive |
Best time | October to March |
How far is Jaipur to Rishikesh by road?
Jaipur to Rishikesh is about 529 km and takes roughly 8 hours 44 minutes by road via NE4, a long drive that runs up through the Delhi region towards the Uttarakhand hills and the Ganges.
Route | Distance | Drive time |
Via NE4 | 529 km | 8 hr 44 min |
Via NE4 and NH344G | 555 km | 8 hr 48 min |
Via NH48 | 541 km | 11 hr 1 min |
How far is Rishikesh to Jaipur by road?
Rishikesh to Jaipur is about 530 km by the fastest route via NE4, taking a similar long time of around 8.5 hours in reverse.
Route | Distance | Drive time |
Via NE4 | 530 km | 8 hr 40 min |
Via NH344G and NE4 | 553 km | 8 hr 39 min |
Via NH48 | 530 km | 10 hr 46 min |
Either way, plan for around 8.5 to 9 hours of driving on the fastest NE4 route, more on the slower NH48, so this is a long journey and very much an overnight or, better, a multi-day trip through the region rather than anything that can be rushed in a single day.
What is the best route from Jaipur to Rishikesh?
The best and fastest route from Jaipur to Rishikesh is via NE4, the modern expressway network, running north from Jaipur up through the Delhi region and on towards Haridwar and Rishikesh in the green Uttarakhand foothills, at about 529 km and 8 hours 44 minutes. The older route via NH48 is a similar distance but can be considerably slower in practice.
Because both Jaipur and Rishikesh lie on opposite sides of Delhi, with Jaipur to the southwest of the capital and Rishikesh to the north, the journey naturally runs via or near Delhi, whichever route you take. For this reason, many travellers sensibly break the drive there, spending a night in Delhi or start and finish the wider trip in the capital itself, turning a tiring single haul into a more comfortable, better-paced journey. Road conditions and traffic can vary considerably along the way, so it is always wise to allow generous time and an early morning start helps you cover this long distance comfortably within a single day.
Ways to travel from Jaipur to Rishikesh
Given the long distance, there are several ways to make the journey:
By road: by private car or taxi, taking around 8.5 to 9 hours on the fast NE4, usually up through the Delhi region. A flexible, comfortable option and one that is often sensibly broken with a stop or an overnight in Delhi, which lies on the way, to make the long distance easier.
By train: trains connect Jaipur and the Ganges towns, usually via Delhi, to Haridwar, the nearest major railhead, from where Rishikesh is only a short drive of around 45 minutes, a restful and scenic way to cover the long distance while you relax.
By air: there is no direct flight, but you can fly from Jaipur, usually connecting via Delhi, to Dehradun airport, near Rishikesh, then take a short drive of about an hour, easily the quickest way to save time on this long overland journey.
For most travellers, a private car is the most flexible and comfortable choice, especially when combining Rishikesh with a wider North India trip, while flying via Dehradun is much the fastest way to bridge the long distance and the train is a restful, economical and scenic alternative for those with a little more time.
About Rishikesh: the yoga capital on the Ganges
Rishikesh is one of India's most special and uplifting towns, set beautifully on the banks of the holy river Ganges at the very point where it flows down out of the Himalayas onto the plains, in the state of Uttarakhand. Known the world over as the yoga capital of the world, it is a place of deep spirituality, wellness and, increasingly, adventure, drawing seekers, pilgrims, yoga students and travellers from every corner of the globe to its ashrams and riverbanks.
The town blends three wonderful things in one: its sacred, spiritual side, with countless ashrams, temples, meditation and the moving evening Ganga Aarti by the river; its wellness side, as a leading world centre of yoga and holistic healing; and its adventurous side, as India's white-water rafting capital, set amid green, forested hills and clear river gorges. It is a uniquely peaceful yet lively, calming yet energising place, drawing everyone from serious yogis and pilgrims to backpackers and thrill-seekers and a beautiful, refreshing contrast to the grand palaces and desert forts of Rajasthan, well worth the long journey up from Jaipur for a taste of a completely different, gentler side of India.
Things to do in Rishikesh
There is a great deal to enjoy in and around Rishikesh:
The Ganga Aarti: the beautiful, serene evening prayer ceremony held by the river at Triveni Ghat and at the Parmarth Niketan ashram, with floating lamps, melodious chanting, ringing bells and heartfelt collective devotion, a deeply peaceful, meditative and genuinely moving experience quite unlike Haridwar's grander, busier spectacle.
Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula: the two iconic suspension footbridges spanning the fast, clear, rushing Ganges, lined with little temples, ashrams, shops and cafes and offering lovely views up and down the river and along its green forested banks and hills.
Yoga and meditation: Rishikesh is world-famous as the acknowledged yoga capital, packed with respected yoga schools, ashrams, retreats and meditation centres, perfect for a single drop-in class, a longer residential retreat, a teacher-training course or simply a first taste of authentic yoga at its very source.
White-water rafting and adventure: Rishikesh is India's undisputed white-water rafting capital, offering thrilling rafting down the fast-flowing Ganges through its exciting rapids, along with riverside camping, bungee jumping, zip-lining, cliff jumping and more, all available in season.
The temples and the Beatles Ashram: the many atmospheric riverside temples and the famous former ashram or Chaurasi Kutia, where the Beatles once famously stayed to meditate back in 1968, now beautifully covered in colourful murals and art, all add to the town's unique, relaxed and creative character.
Nearby Haridwar: the ancient holy city of Haridwar, one of the seven holiest cities in India, with its own spectacular great Ganga Aarti at the Har Ki Pauri ghat, is just a short drive away and is almost always easily and rewardingly combined with a Rishikesh visit.
A day or two lets you comfortably enjoy the moving evening aarti, cross the famous bridges, try a little yoga and, if you wish, a thrilling rafting trip, which is very much the essence and the joy of Rishikesh, though those specifically seeking a yoga retreat, an ashram stay or a fuller adventure programme may happily choose to stay on much longer.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Rishikesh and to make the long journey up from Jaipur, is the cool season, October to March, when the weather is pleasant and comfortable for exploring the town, the ghats and the temples, as our best time to visit North India guide explains in detail for the wider region.
For white-water rafting specifically, the season runs roughly from September to June, as rafting is suspended during the monsoon months, from July to September, when the swollen river runs dangerously high and fast. Summers, from April to June, are warm but generally bearable and remain popular, since Rishikesh is also the gateway to the much cooler hill stations and the Char Dham pilgrimage of Uttarakhand just above, while the monsoon brings heavy, sustained rain to this Himalayan-foothill region. For a comfortable trip combining the town with the long journey up from Jaipur, the cool season from October to March is much the best, with the spring especially good and popular for river rafting.
Combining Rishikesh with your trip
Rishikesh combines beautifully with a wider North India trip:
With the Golden Triangle: Rishikesh makes a wonderful spiritual and adventurous extension to a classic Golden Triangle trip, usually added on conveniently from Delhi, which lies between it and Jaipur, as our Golden Triangle with Rishikesh and Haridwar guide describes in full.
With Haridwar: the holy city of Haridwar is right beside Rishikesh, only a short drive away, so the two Ganges towns are almost always visited together on one trip, each with its own great evening aarti.
With the hills: Rishikesh is the natural gateway to the cool Uttarakhand hills and hill stations just above it, as our best hill stations near Delhi guide covers.
For the Pink City itself before you set off, our things to do in Jaipur guide covers Jaipur and its palaces and forts in full and for another popular route out of the city in the opposite direction, our Jaipur to Udaipur distance guide covers the Rajasthan direction.
