What is the best route from Jaipur to Salasar Balaji?
The quickest and most comfortable route runs via NH52 through Sikar, the classic Jaipur-Sikar road, at about 171 to 178 km and around three and a half hours. This route has good roads and plenty of fuel and food stops, so it is the one most travellers take. A slightly shorter route runs via Ringas and Chomu, but the Sikar road is generally smoother.
It is a straightforward, well-connected drive across the Shekhawati region, past small towns and open countryside, which makes Salasar Balaji a comfortable day trip from Jaipur, easily done and back in a single day. Set off early to make the most of the day and the well-maintained highway means the kilometres pass quickly, leaving you plenty of time for an unhurried darshan.
Is Salasar Balaji a day trip from Jaipur?
Yes. At around 175 km and three and a half hours each way, Salasar Balaji is an easy day trip from Jaipur. A morning start gets you there for darshan and back to the city by evening, with time to spare.
Even better, because Salasar lies close to the great temple of Khatu Shyam, about 103 km away, many pilgrims combine the two into a short pilgrimage, visiting both over a day or two. This is one of the most popular devotional trips in Rajasthan and a car or taxi makes it easy to do at your own pace, timing each darshan to avoid the busiest hours. Those with more time often add the nearby Jeen Mata and Rani Sati temples as well, turning the trip into a fuller Shekhawati pilgrimage circuit.
How to reach Salasar Balaji by train and bus
Besides driving, there are good public transport options:
By train: the nearest railway station is Sujangarh, about 24 to 30 km from Salasar, with Sikar another option a little further away. Both are connected to Jaipur and other cities and taxis and shared local buses run frequently from the station to the temple, taking under an hour.
By bus: Rajasthan Roadways and private buses run regularly from Jaipur, from the Sindhi Camp bus stand, towards Sikar and Salasar, with direct and connecting services throughout the day, an economical option for budget-conscious pilgrims.
For most visitors from Jaipur, though, a car or taxi is the simplest and most comfortable choice, especially if you plan to combine Salasar with Khatu Shyam.
Where is Salasar Balaji and what is it known for?
Salasar Balaji temple stands in the heart of the town of Salasar, near Sujangarh, in the Churu district of Rajasthan, in the Shekhawati region. It is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, worshipped here as Balaji and it is one of the most visited Hanuman temples in all of North India, drawing lakhs of devotees who come to seek blessings, strength, protection and the fulfilment of their wishes.
What sets Salasar apart and makes its idol unique, is that Lord Hanuman here is depicted with a beard and a moustache, a round face, knotty eyebrows and a tilak on his forehead. It is the only Hanuman temple in the country where the deity appears in this distinctive bearded form, which makes a darshan here quite unlike any other Hanuman temple. The idol is believed to be swayambhu or self-manifested and it is seated on a golden throne, with the Ram Darbar above and Balaji at the feet of Lord Ram. The grand, gold-adorned temple, built in the rich Rajasthani style with silver gates and gold-plated doors and its constant chants of "Jai Balaji Maharaj" and "Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ki Jai", create a joyful, deeply devotional atmosphere that lifts every visitor. Within the complex, an eternal lamp and an ancient sacred fire or dhuna, are said to have burned since the temple's founding.
The story of the bearded idol
The story behind Salasar Balaji's unique idol is beloved by devotees and it explains the temple's distinctive form of Hanuman. It dates to around 1754, when a Jat farmer in the village of Asota in Nagaur unearthed a stone idol of Balaji while ploughing his field. The news spread quickly and it is said that Lord Balaji appeared in a dream to the Thakur of Asota, asking that the idol be sent onward to Salasar.
On the very same night, Mohandas Maharaj, a great devotee of Hanuman living in Salasar, also dreamt of Balaji and it is said that when Balaji appeared to him in the form of a saint, Mohandas beheld him with a beard and moustache. He then lovingly decorated the self-manifested idol in that same form, using ghee and sindoor and it was consecrated at Salasar, where it has been worshipped in this unique bearded form ever since, for more than two and a half centuries. To this day, an eternal lamp burns in the temple and the sacred Jaanti tree in the complex remains a place where devotees offer coconuts and flags and tie red threads to make their wishes, in a tradition unbroken since the temple's earliest days.
The great fairs at Salasar
Salasar Balaji is at its most vibrant during its two great annual fairs, when lakhs of devotees pour into the small town from across the region and beyond:
Chaitra Purnima: the fair in the Hindu month of Chaitra, in March or April, one of the two largest gatherings of the year at the temple.
Ashwin Purnima: the fair in the month of Ashwin, in September or October, the other great annual fair.
Hanuman Jayanti: the birth of Lord Hanuman is also celebrated with great devotion here.
During these times, the town fills with pilgrims and the atmosphere is electric with faith, colour and devotional music and the temple stays busy around the clock. If you visit during a fair, expect huge crowds and long queues, so plan your transport and accommodation far ahead, but also an unforgettable experience of devotion on a grand scale, the kind that stays with you long after. Outside the fairs, the temple is welcoming and easy to visit, with the deepest crowds on Saturdays and Tuesdays.
Darshan, offerings and customs
A visit to Salasar Balaji is a joyful, welcoming experience and knowing a few customs helps:
The offerings: the traditional offerings are bundi laddoos and mishri or rock sugar, along with coconuts and flags at the Jaanti tree, all available from the many shops around the temple.
The Jaanti tree: tying a red thread and offering a coconut and flag at the sacred tree, while making a wish, is a much-loved tradition that devotees have followed for generations.
Sponsoring a bhandara: many devotees sponsor a bhandara or free community meal, as an offering of thanks when a wish is fulfilled, feeding fellow pilgrims.
Darshan: the temple is busy year-round and especially on the fair days and on Saturdays and Tuesdays, so arrive early for a calmer darshan and be patient in the queues, which move steadily.
The temple has dharamshalas for staying and plenty of restaurants and shops, so it is well set up for pilgrims.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Salasar Balaji is October to March, when the weather is pleasant for the drive and the visit. The two great fairs, at Chaitra Purnima and Ashwin Purnima, are the most spectacular times, though also the most crowded, so plan ahead if you wish to experience them.
Summers, from April to June, are hot, so travel early and carry water. Whenever you go, an early start from Jaipur beats both the heat and the day's crowds and Saturdays and Tuesdays, the days of Hanuman, draw larger numbers of devotees, so a weekday visit outside the fairs is the calmest option if you prefer fewer people.
Combining Salasar with Khatu Shyam and the Shekhawati circuit
The great joy of a Salasar trip is how easily it combines with the other famous temples of the region into a rewarding pilgrimage circuit:
Khatu Shyam: the hugely popular temple of Shyam Baba is about 103 km away, roughly two to three hours by road and the two are classically visited together as the region's most famous pilgrimage pair, as our Jaipur to Khatu Shyam distance guide describes. Many pilgrims do both over two days.
Jeen Mata and Rani Sati: the Shakti Peeth of Jeen Mata is only about 26 km away, especially vibrant during Navratri and the famous Rani Sati Dadi temple in Jhunjhunu is within reach, rounding out the Shekhawati pilgrimage circuit for those with more time.
The wider Balaji trail: devotees on a Hanuman pilgrimage often pair Salasar with the other great Balaji temple in our Jaipur to Mehandipur Balaji distance guide and the Hanuman temples in our Hanuman Jayanti 2027 guide.
