Mathura & Vrindavan from Delhi

Quick Answer

Quick Read 3+ Reviews

Mathura and Vrindavan, the twin holy cities of Lord Krishna, sit about 150 km south of Delhi, roughly 3.5 hours by road on the Yamuna Expressway. The main places to see are the Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura and Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir and ISKCON in Vrindavan. You can do both as a long day trip from Delhi or a stop on the way to Agra.

Mathura is the birthplace of Krishna and Vrindavan the town where he spent his childhood, and the two sit just twelve kilometres apart, wrapped in hundreds of temples and the constant sound of bhajans. From Delhi they make either a full, early-start day trip or, better, an easy stop on the drive down to Agra, since they lie right off the same expressway. If you only have time for a handful of temples, make them Banke Bihari and Prem Mandir in Vrindavan and the Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura, and time Prem Mandir for after dark.

I was born in Delhi, and in 11 years with Experience My India I have taken travelers down this road countless times, both for the temples themselves and as a soulful detour on the way to the Taj. Mathura and Vrindavan reward a little planning, because the crowds and the temple rules catch people out. Here is what to see, how to reach it, and how to fit it into your trip.

How to reach Mathura and Vrindavan from Delhi

Mathura is about 150 km south of Delhi and Vrindavan another dozen kilometres beyond it, roughly three to three and a half hours by car on the Yamuna Expressway, the same fast road you take towards Agra, as our Delhi to Agra distance guide explains. A private car is easiest, since you will want to move between the two towns and several temples; drivers usually cover Vrindavan and Mathura in a loop. Trains also run from Delhi to Mathura Junction in around two hours, and from the station autos and e-rickshaws reach the temples, though you lose the flexibility of a car. Within the area, shared autos and e-rickshaws shuttle constantly between Mathura and Vrindavan.

Places to see in Vrindavan

Vrindavan is the more temple-dense of the two, a warren of lanes with a shrine at every turn. These are the ones to prioritise.

Banke Bihari Temple

Banke Bihari is the most beloved temple in Vrindavan, dedicated to Krishna in a gentle three-fold bending pose. There are no bells and no ceremonial pomp, and a curtain is drawn across the deity every few moments rather than left open, so that no devotee gazes too long. It is intensely crowded, especially in the mornings and on festivals, and the lanes leading to it are narrow, so go early. Phones, cameras and bags are not allowed inside.

Prem Mandir

Prem Mandir, the Temple of Love, is the one that takes your breath away. A vast temple of white Italian marble covered in delicate carvings of the lives of Radha-Krishna and Sita-Ram, set in landscaped gardens with a musical fountain, it was completed in 2012 and is beautifully run and spacious, a relief after the crush of the old lanes. See it after sunset, when the whole marble structure is lit in slowly changing colours, which is genuinely one of the loveliest sights in North India.

ISKCON Vrindavan

The ISKCON temple, the Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, is the international Hare Krishna temple, joyful, welcoming and beautifully kept, with uplifting kirtan and aarti, the samadhi of the movement's founder, and good visitor facilities including a well-known vegetarian restaurant. It is the easiest temple here for first-time or foreign visitors to feel at home in.

Nidhivan and the older temples

For atmosphere, seek out Nidhivan, a dense sacred grove where legend holds, Krishna and Radha dance each night, so that no one is allowed to remain after dark. Around it lie the older, quieter temples, Radha Raman with its self-manifested deity, Radha Vallabh and Radha Damodar, and the ghats along the Yamuna, all worth a wander if you have time beyond the big three.

Places to see in Mathura

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi

The spiritual centre of Mathura is the Krishna Janmabhoomi, built around the prison cell where Krishna is believed to have been born. It is a deeply moving place, and because it stands beside the historic Shahi Idgah mosque, security here is the tightest of any temple in the region: no phones, cameras, bags, leather items or pens are allowed inside, and everything must be deposited outside. Come prepared to travel very light.

Dwarkadhish Temple and Vishram Ghat

Dwarkadhish is Mathura's principal temple, ornately decorated and full of life at aarti time, and it sits close to the river. From there walk down to Vishram Ghat, the main bathing ghat where Krishna is said to have rested, the heart of Mathura's twenty-five ghats. Time your visit for the evening Yamuna aarti, when rows of lamps are floated on the water, and consider a short boat ride at dusk.

The temple rules and etiquette you must know

This is what quietly makes or breaks a visit. At the Krishna Janmabhoomi and Banke Bihari in particular, phones, cameras, bags and leather are banned, and while there are cloak counters, they can be chaotic in the crush, so the simplest fix is to leave valuables in your car or hotel and carry only a little cash. Remove your shoes at every temple, dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and keep your money close, because the crowds are dense and pickpockets work them. Be politely firm with the pandas, the temple priests, who will press you for donations. Photography is not allowed inside most temples, so simply be present rather than filming.

How to plan it: day trip or a stop on the way to Agra

There are two good ways to do this. As a day trip from Delhi, leave by about 7:00 AM, spend the late morning and afternoon on Vrindavan and Mathura, catch Prem Mandir lit up for the evening aarti, and drive back, a long but rewarding day. The smarter option for many travellers is to fold it into the drive south: Mathura and Vrindavan sit right on the Delhi to Agra corridor, so you can see the temples and carry on to Agra for the Taj Mahal, pairing them with the best places to visit in Agra on an Agra overnight tour. If you are basing yourself in the capital first, our guide to the best places to visit in Delhi helps you plan those days, and the whole region links neatly into the full Golden Triangle itinerary.

Best time to visit

Come between October and March, when the weather is pleasant for walking between temples; April to June is very hot and the monsoon brings some rain. The two great occasions are Holi in March, when Mathura, Vrindavan and the nearby villages of Barsana and Nandgaon erupt in colour, including the famous Lathmar Holi, and Janmashtami, Krishna's birthday in August or September, when Mathura fills to overflowing. Both are unforgettable but overwhelming, so come only if you want the intensity, and book far ahead. On any normal day, mornings are best for the busy temples and evenings for Prem Mandir and the river aarti.

What to eat

Do not leave without trying the local sweets. Mathura is famous across India for its peda, a soft, grainy milk fudge, and for thick, creamy lassi, while the streets serve up kachori with spiced potato, chaat and jalebi. The ISKCON restaurant and the prasad at the big temples are reliable vegetarian options, and eating is kept simple and pure-vegetarian throughout these holy towns.

Yes, as a long day trip: leave Delhi by about 7:00 AM, see the main temples of both towns, and drive back in the evening. It is tight but rewarding. Many travellers instead visit them on the way to Agra.

October to March for pleasant weather. Holi in March and Janmashtami in August or September are spectacular but extremely crowded, so book well ahead if you want to experience them.
