Quick Answer
Agra Cantt to the Taj Mahal is about 6 km and takes 16 to 19 minutes by road. The quickest by time is via The Mall Road and General Cariappa Road at 6.1 km, while the shortest distance is 5.2 km via Cantt Road and Namner Road. Vehicles stop a short walk from the gate, as the Taj sits in a no-vehicle zone, and the East Gate is the calmest, ideal for sunrise.
Agra Cantt to the Taj Mahal is a short ride of about 6 km that takes roughly 16 to 19 minutes by road. There are three usual routes: the quickest by time runs 6.1 km via The Mall Road and General Cariappa Road, The Mall Road alone is 5.7 km, and the shortest at 5.2 km goes via Cantt Road and Namner Road. One thing every first-timer should know is that vehicles cannot drive right up to the Taj; they stop at a parking zone a short distance away, and you cover the last stretch on foot or by electric shuttle. This guide covers the routes, the transport, the right gate and the practical details.
I was born in Delhi, and in 11 years guiding the Agra leg of the Golden Triangle for Experience My India I have made this run at dawn more times than I can count, because for most visitors it is the very first thing they do after stepping off the train. Get the gate and the timing right and your Taj morning starts perfectly. Here is how.

How far is Agra Cantt from the Taj Mahal?
Agra Cantt is about 6 km from the Taj Mahal, and the drive takes around 16 to 19 minutes in normal traffic, a little longer in the busy middle of the day. The exact distance depends on which route and which gate you head for, ranging from about 5.2 km on the shortest road to 6.1 km on the fastest-flowing one. Either way it is a quick trip, which is why so many travellers step off an early train and go straight to the monument for sunrise.
Routes from Agra Cantt to the Taj Mahal
Three routes cover the journey, and the fastest by clock is not the shortest by distance. Here is how they compare.
Route | Distance | Time |
The Mall Rd and General Cariappa Rd | 6.1 km | 16 min |
The Mall Rd | 5.7 km | 17 min |
Cantt Rd / Namner Rd | 5.2 km | 19 min |
How to get from Agra Cantt to the Taj Mahal
You have plenty of choice right outside the station. An auto-rickshaw is the cheapest and most common ride and does the trip in about 15 to 20 minutes. A taxi or an app cab such as Ola or Uber costs more but gives you air conditioning and a fixed price, which is worth it early in the morning or with luggage. E-rickshaws are handy, especially for the final approach to the gate, and city buses run toward Tajganj for very little though they are slower. For a fixed, no-haggling fare, use the prepaid taxi and auto booth just outside the Agra Cantt exit.
The last stretch: the Taj Mahal no-vehicle zone
This is the detail that surprises most first-time visitors. To protect the marble from pollution, no motor vehicles are allowed near the Taj Mahal, so your taxi or auto drops you at a parking area a few hundred metres from the gate, roughly 500 to 700 metres from the West Gate and a little more from the East and South Gates. From there you walk or take an authorised, pollution-free ride, an electric rickshaw, a battery bus or a golf cart, for the final stretch. Factor a few extra minutes into your plan for this last leg.
Which Taj Mahal gate should you head to?
The Taj Mahal has three entry gates, and the choice matters. The East Gate is the calmest, has the cleanest facilities and its own metro stop, and is the best choice for a sunrise arrival from Agra Cantt. The West Gate is the busiest, used by most Indian visitors and convenient during the day. The South Gate, in Taj Ganj, opens later and suits those staying in that area, so it is not ideal for early mornings. For the full reasoning on when to go, see our best time to visit Taj Mahal Agra guide.
How long does the journey take?
Allow 16 to 19 minutes for the drive in normal conditions, and add about 10 to 15 minutes for the walk or electric shuttle from the parking to the gate and through security. Early mornings are the fastest and calmest, so if you are aiming for sunrise, leave the station as soon as you arrive. The middle of the day brings heavier traffic and longer queues.
Tips for the trip
A few things make the morning smooth. Large bags are not allowed inside the Taj, so leave luggage in the Agra Cantt cloakroom or at your hotel. Book your Taj entry ticket online in advance to skip the counter queue, and remember the monument is closed on Fridays. Use the prepaid booth or agree the fare before setting off, carry small cash for the e-rickshaw and keep water handy. If you plan to see the fort afterwards, it is only a couple of kilometres away, so a driver hired for the morning saves time.
After the Taj: seeing the rest of Agra
The Taj is only the start. Agra Fort is about 5 km away, a trip we cover in our Agra Cantt to Agra Fort distance guide, and there is far more besides, from the Baby Taj to Mehtab Bagh, in our Agra places of interest guide. To fit the highlights into a single day see our places to visit in Agra in one day itinerary, and to pick a base near the East Gate our where to stay in Agra guide helps.
