Golden Triangle Tour 3 Days

Quick Answer

Quick Read 3+ Reviews

A 3-day Golden Triangle tour covers Delhi, Agra and Jaipur at a brisk pace: day one for Delhi's highlights and the drive to Agra, day two for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort then on to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri, and day three for Jaipur's forts and palaces before returning to Delhi. It is fast but rewarding; four days is more relaxed.

three days is enough to see the headline sights of all three Golden Triangle cities if you keep moving and start each day early. The classic plan is Delhi's best bits and the drive to Agra on day one, the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort followed by the drive to Jaipur on day two, and Jaipur's Amber Fort and Pink City with the return to Delhi on day three. It is a full, fast itinerary rather than a leisurely one, so if you can spare a fourth day, take it; but done well, three days still delivers the whole triangle.

I was born in Delhi, and in 11 years running the Golden Triangle for Experience My India I have done this compressed three-day version countless times for travelers who are short on days but do not want to miss the circuit. The secret is an early start and a good driver. Here is the exact three-day itinerary I use, day by day, plus how to travel it and what to know before you go.

The day-by-day 3-day itinerary

Day 1: Delhi and drive to Agra

Start with a morning of Delhi's greatest hits, choosing a few rather than all: the towering Qutub Minar, the serene Humayun's Tomb, and a drive past India Gate, or a dip into Old Delhi if you prefer the bazaars. Our guide to places to visit in Delhi helps you pick. After an early lunch, drive to Agra on the Yamuna Expressway, about four hours, as our Delhi to Agra distance guide explains, and settle into your Agra hotel for the night so you are set for a sunrise start.

Day 2: Agra to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri

Be at the Taj Mahal for opening, when the marble glows and the crowds are thin; check Taj Mahal timings and ticket price and remember it is closed on Fridays. Next, the mighty Agra Fort history and timings, where Shah Jahan was imprisoned in sight of the Taj. Then drive towards Jaipur, stopping at Fatehpur Sikri guide, Akbar's abandoned capital, and, if time allows, the Chand Baori stepwell; our Agra to Jaipur road trip guide covers the route and stops. Arrive in Jaipur for the night.

Day 3: Jaipur and back to Delhi

Give the morning to the Pink City: climb the hilltop Amber Fort at opening, then take in the City Palace, the honeycomb Hawa Mahal and the giant instruments of Jantar Mantar, all covered in our guide to places to visit in Jaipur. After lunch, drive back to Delhi, about five to six hours, closing the triangle where it began. If your flight is the same evening, keep the Jaipur morning tight; if not, you can linger over the bazaars before setting off.

Is 3 days enough for the Golden Triangle?

Honestly, three days is enough to see the highlights, but only just, and it means two long travel days back to back. You get the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and the main sights of Delhi and Jaipur, but little slack for lingering, shopping or a slow lunch. If you possibly can, add a fourth day, which lets you give Delhi its own day and enjoy a Taj sunrise without a pre-dawn scramble; our Golden Triangle tour itinerary lays out that more relaxed four-day version. Choose three days if your time is fixed and you are happy with a fast pace; choose four if you would rather savour it.

How to travel and what it costs

For a three-day tour, a private car with a driver is essential, not optional. The itinerary depends on early starts, the Fatehpur Sikri stop and door-to-door efficiency, none of which trains or buses give you across such a tight schedule. Costs depend mostly on your hotel standard and whether you travel privately or in a small group, so rather than quote a figure that dates quickly, tell us your dates and standard and we will price it honestly. As a rule, a private three-day tour with a good mid-range hotel is excellent value for how much it packs in.

Best time and what to know

Travel between October and March for the kindest weather across all three cities. On a three-day tour the two timing rules matter even more than usual, because you have no spare day to absorb a mistake: never put your Agra day on a Friday, when the Taj Mahal is closed, and do not rely on a Monday in Delhi, when the Red Fort and the big temples close. Buy the Jaipur composite ticket at your first monument there, hire only licensed guides, and start each day early, since on a compressed itinerary your start time is the difference between seeing everything and missing something.

Our three-day Golden Triangle trip with Experience My India was an excellent experience from start to finish. Abhay Sharma helped us plan the itinerary around our travel dates and arranged the hotel stays, private car and experienced driver. The early morning Taj Mahal visit was especially well managed, and the guide explained the history of Agra Fort beautifully. Even with Delhi, Agra and Jaipur in just three days, everything was coordinated smoothly and we never had to worry about the logistics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions

Yes, three days is enough to see the highlights of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur if you start early and keep moving, though it means two long travel days. Four days is more comfortable and adds a full Delhi day and an easy Taj sunrise.

Day 1: Delhi highlights, then drive to Agra. Day 2: Taj Mahal at sunrise and Agra Fort, then drive to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri. Day 3: Jaipur's Amber Fort and Pink City, then drive back to Delhi.

Two nights: one in Agra and one in Jaipur, starting and ending in Delhi. Some versions add a Delhi night at the start, making it three nights.

Yes. On the classic 3-day plan you see the Taj Mahal on the morning of day two, ideally at sunrise, having stayed in Agra the night before. Just avoid scheduling that day on a Friday, when the Taj is closed.
