Quick Answer
To plan a Golden Triangle tour with Khajuraho, add the famous temple town as a flight or train trip from Delhi or Agra, before or after the circuit. See its magnificent UNESCO temples and their carvings over a day or two. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans these trips.
Adding Khajuraho to the classic Golden Triangle is a wonderful way to bring in one of India's very greatest artistic and architectural treasures, pairing the grand Mughal and Rajput heritage of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur with the magnificent, intricately carved thousand-year-old temples of Khajuraho. The temple town lies in central India and is reached easily by a short flight or a train from Delhi or Agra, so it fits neatly onto the trip. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages explains exactly how to plan a Golden Triangle tour with Khajuraho, from the route to the temples, ideal as an extension to a Golden Triangle tour.
I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years guiding the Golden Triangle for Experience My India I have planned many trips extending it to the magnificent temples of Khajuraho, often on the way to Varanasi. Here is the clear, practical guide.

What is the Golden Triangle with Khajuraho?
The Golden Triangle is India's classic and most popular tourist circuit, linking Delhi, the historic capital; Agra, home of the incomparable Taj Mahal; and Jaipur, the Pink City of Rajasthan, a perfect introduction to India's rich Mughal and Rajput heritage of forts, tombs and palaces.
Khajuraho, in the state of Madhya Pradesh in the heart of central India, is home to a magnificent group of Hindu and Jain temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated the world over as one of the very finest achievements of Indian temple art and architecture. Adding it to the Golden Triangle blends the grand Mughal and Rajput monuments of the north with the extraordinary, elaborately carved temples of Khajuraho, from a much earlier age, for a richer, deeper and far more artistically rounded and complete journey through India's long and varied heritage.
Why add Khajuraho to the Golden Triangle?
Khajuraho brings a magnificent artistic and architectural dimension to the Golden Triangle:
A UNESCO masterpiece: the Khajuraho temples are among the very greatest surviving achievements of Indian art and architecture, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of genuine world importance, quite unlike anything on the Golden Triangle itself.
Extraordinary carvings: the temples are covered in thousands of exquisitely detailed, flowing sculptures depicting gods, celestial dancers, musicians, animals and all of life, a true wonder of stone artistry that must be seen to be believed.
A different era of heritage: where the Golden Triangle shows you Mughal and Rajput India, Khajuraho reveals the earlier, classical temple-building golden age of the Chandela dynasty, adding real depth and time to your picture of India's history.
A gateway onward: Khajuraho pairs beautifully with Varanasi and central India and is a natural stepping-stone for those extending their trip further east, as our Golden Triangle with Varanasi guide describes.
For anyone with an interest in art, history, sculpture and temple architecture or simply a wish to see one of India's true wonders, Khajuraho is a superb, enriching and deeply rewarding addition to the Golden Triangle and one that leaves a lasting impression.
How to get to Khajuraho
Khajuraho lies about 600 km southeast of the Golden Triangle, in the heart of central India, so it is reached from Delhi or Agra by air or train rather than driven to as part of the compact city circuit:
By flight: the quickest and most popular option, a short, direct flight of around an hour and a half from Delhi to Khajuraho, which has its own airport, also connected at times to Varanasi and Agra. Most trips simply fly into Khajuraho.
By train: Khajuraho has its own railway station, with some direct services and can also be reached conveniently via Jhansi, on the main Delhi to Agra line, from where it is a few hours by road, a good option that combines nicely with a stop at Orchha on the way.
By road: driving the whole way from Delhi or Agra is possible but long, so flying or taking the train is far more sensible and time-saving for this leg of the trip.
Because of the distance, flying or the train is what we usually recommend, added as a leg from Delhi or Agra, as our Golden Triangle with Amritsar and Golden Triangle with Udaipur guides cover other extensions.
A suggested itinerary
Khajuraho is usually added from Delhi or Agra, before, after or in the middle of the Golden Triangle. Here is one classic, well-tested outline that works well:
Days 1 to 2, Delhi: arrive and explore the capital at leisure, both Old and New Delhi and their great historic landmarks.
Day 3, Agra: drive to Agra to see the magnificent Taj Mahal, ideally at sunrise and the mighty Agra Fort.
Day 4, Agra to Jaipur: drive on to Jaipur, stopping at the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri on the way.
Days 5 to 6, Jaipur: explore the vibrant Pink City, the Amber Fort, the City Palace and the colourful bazaars.
Day 7, fly or train to Khajuraho: travel to Khajuraho, settle in and see the first temples, ending with the evening Light and Sound show.
Day 8, Khajuraho: explore the temples more fully with a guide, perhaps visit a nearby national park, then fly onward to Varanasi or back to Delhi.
Khajuraho can equally be woven in via Jhansi and Orchha and we tailor the plan to your interests and pace.
The temples of Khajuraho
The temples of Khajuraho, built by the powerful Chandela dynasty around a thousand years ago, are the very heart and reason of any visit and a genuine wonder of Indian art, sculpture and architecture:
The Western Group: the largest, best-preserved and most famous group and the undoubted highlight of any visit, home to the truly magnificent Kandariya Mahadev Temple, the grandest, tallest and most richly ornate of them all, along with the fine Lakshmana, Vishwanath and Devi Jagadambi temples, all set in beautifully kept lawns and gardens.
The Eastern Group: a fine and more peaceful group of Jain temples, including the elegant Parsvanath and Adinath temples, exquisitely carved and quieter, standing in and around the old village of Khajuraho itself.
The Southern Group: the Duladeo and Chaturbhuj temples, set a little apart from the rest, well worth seeing for those with a little more time and interest in the temples.
The Light and Sound show: the atmospheric evening show at the Western Group, which tells the story of Khajuraho and the Chandela kings against the beautifully floodlit temples, a lovely and evocative way to round off a day.
The temples are famous the world over for their exquisite, intricate and remarkably lifelike sculptures, which cover the outer and inner walls in astonishing, flowing detail, depicting gods and goddesses, graceful celestial dancers and musicians, warriors, elephants and horses and countless scenes of ordinary daily life, of which only a small proportion are the well-known sensual carvings for which the temples are sometimes narrowly remembered. Taken together and seen in full, they form a breathtaking, joyful celebration of the whole of life and of consummate artistry in stone and a good, knowledgeable guide brings their history, symbolism, mythology and sheer craftsmanship vividly and memorably to life as you walk among them.
Beyond Khajuraho
For those with more time, the area around Khajuraho has more to offer:
Panna National Park: a fine tiger reserve only about 25 to 30 km away, offering jungle safaris and the real chance of spotting tigers, leopards, deer and rich birdlife, a lovely wild add-on to the temples for those wanting some nature and adventure too.
Raneh Falls: a scenic, dramatic canyon and waterfall on the Ken river, with striking colourful crystalline rock formations carved by the water over ages, near the national park.
Orchha: the beautiful, atmospheric medieval town of grand palaces, temples and riverside cenotaphs on the Betwa river, about 175 km away, often combined with Khajuraho via Jhansi on the way in or out.
These add nature and further heritage for those wanting a fuller central-India trip.
The Khajuraho Dance Festival
A special highlight of the year is the famous Khajuraho Dance Festival, usually held over about a week in February or March, when many of the leading classical dancers from across India come to perform the great classical dance forms, such as Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi and more, against the magnificent floodlit backdrop of the Western Group temples. It is a truly magical, atmospheric and world-renowned celebration of Indian classical dance and music, set in one of the most beautiful heritage settings in the whole country and a wonderful, memorable time to visit if your travel dates happen to allow it, though it is naturally busier and needs booking well ahead. The exact dates change each year, so it is always worth reconfirming them when planning a trip around the festival.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Khajuraho, as with the whole Golden Triangle, is October to March, when the weather in central India is pleasant and comfortable for exploring the temples on foot, as our best time to visit North India guide explains for the wider region.
Winters, from December to February, are lovely and mild, ideal for wandering the temple gardens and admiring the carvings in soft light, while summers, from April to June, are hot in central India, so the cool season is much preferred for comfort. The monsoon brings rain and fresh greenery to the surrounding countryside. The famous Khajuraho Dance Festival in February or March is a particularly special and atmospheric time to visit. For a comfortable, unhurried visit overall, aim firmly for the cool season, October to March.
Tips for planning the trip
Add Khajuraho from Delhi or Agra by a short flight or a train, not a long drive.
Allow at least a day, ideally two, for the temples and any nearby sights.
Take a good guide, as the temples' history, art and symbolism are best appreciated with one.
See the evening Light and Sound show at the Western Group for the temples' story.
Consider pairing Khajuraho with Varanasi or with Orchha via Jhansi, on a longer trip.
Visit from October to March or for the Khajuraho Dance Festival in February or March.
