Quick Answer
Jaipur to Prayagraj is about 734 to 770 km and around 11 hours 42 minutes by road via the Agra-Lucknow and Ganga expressways, through Agra. It is best done by flight, around 1.5 hours, or an overnight train, not a day trip. Delhi Agra Tour Packages, a unit of Experience My India, plans Prayagraj trips.
Prayagraj, the ancient city of the Triveni Sangam and the host of the Kumbh Mela, is one of the holiest places in India and travellers from Jaipur, the Pink City of Rajasthan, often wish to reach it for a holy dip, the great mela or its rich Mughal and colonial heritage. They are, however, a long way apart, so choosing the right way to travel matters. This guide from Delhi Agra Tour Packages covers the Jaipur to Prayagraj distance in both directions, the best road route, the fast flights and trains, the sacred Sangam and the Kumbh and how to plan your visit, often as part of a wider Golden Triangle and pilgrimage journey, even a Golden Triangle tour extended east.
I was born in Delhi and in more than 11 years arranging North India trips for Experience My India I have sent many travellers on to the Sangam. Here is the clear, practical and honest guide, from a Delhi local.

How far is Jaipur to Prayagraj by road?
Jaipur to Prayagraj is about 734 to 770 km and takes roughly 11 hours 42 minutes by road, with a few route options.
Route | Distance | Drive time |
Via Agra-Lucknow Expressway and Ganga Expressway | 770 km | 11 hr 42 min |
Via NH19 | 746 km | 15 hr 14 min |
Via Agra-Jaipur Road and NH19 | 734 km | 13 hr 1 min |
The fastest route runs east from Jaipur through Agra, then onto the expressway network across Uttar Pradesh, but at over 730 km it is a very long haul.
How far is Prayagraj to Jaipur by road?
Prayagraj to Jaipur is about 721 to 758 km on the main routes, taking a similar time in reverse.
Route | Distance | Drive time |
Via Ganga Expressway, Agra-Lucknow Expressway and NH21 | 758 km | 11 hr 1 min |
Via NH19 and NH21 | 721 km | 12 hr 32 min |
Via Ganga Expressway | 957 km | 12 hr 38 min |
The direct expressway routes are quickest, so plan for around eleven to thirteen hours of driving, a long day at least.
What is the best route from Jaipur to Prayagraj?
The quickest route runs east from Jaipur, first to Agra, then along the Agra-Lucknow Expressway to Lucknow and on via the newer Ganga Expressway toward Prayagraj. This chain of modern, access-controlled expressways is what makes the long drive manageable, replacing a once much slower journey.
Even so, at over 730 km it is one of the longer journeys across North India, so almost no one drives it in a single stretch. The route is best broken with an overnight stop, ideally at Agra or Lucknow or, far better for most travellers, done by flight or overnight train.
Is Prayagraj a day trip from Jaipur?
No, it is far too far for a day trip. At over 730 km and around twelve hours each way by road, a Jaipur to Prayagraj day trip is simply not practical and even a there-and-back road journey would take several days. Prayagraj is a destination to reach by flight or train or to fold into a longer, one-way pilgrimage and Golden Triangle itinerary.
The natural way to visit from Jaipur is as part of a bigger journey: see Jaipur as a Golden Triangle city, then continue east, via Agra, to Prayagraj by flight or train, rather than treating it as a simple return trip.
Can you fly from Jaipur to Prayagraj?
Yes and flying is by far the fastest way. Prayagraj Airport at Bamrauli, about 13 to 15 km from the Sangam and city, is connected to Jaipur by direct or connecting flights, with direct services taking only around 1.5 hours in the air. The airport has grown greatly in recent years, especially around the Kumbh and now links Prayagraj to many Indian cities.
For most travellers from Jaipur, especially those short on time, flying is the natural choice, far quicker than the twelve-hour drive, letting you land and reach the Sangam within an hour of arriving.
Is there a train from Jaipur to Prayagraj?
Yes. Prayagraj is a major railway hub and it is connected to Jaipur by rail. Prayagraj Junction, the main station, lies about 10 km from the Sangam and is served by fast and overnight trains from Jaipur, most taking many hours, so an overnight service lets you sleep through the journey and arrive in the morning.
The train is a comfortable and affordable option and Prayagraj has several stations, so there is plenty of choice. Booking ahead is wise and essential during the Magh Mela and Kumbh, when demand is enormous.
The Golden Triangle and pilgrimage
What makes the Jaipur to Prayagraj journey rewarding is how it fits into a wider trip. Because the route east from Jaipur passes through Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, it slots naturally onto the end of a Golden Triangle circuit, taking you from the forts and palaces of Rajasthan to the sacred rivers of the Hindu heartland.
A wonderful plan is to travel Delhi, Agra and Jaipur as the Golden Triangle over several days, then continue to Prayagraj and on to nearby Varanasi, for a spiritual finale, taking you from Mughal splendour to the sacred rivers of the Hindu heartland in one grand arc. This one-way structure, rather than a return trip, is the sensible way to link two places so far apart. Our things to do in Agra guide covers the Taj city on the way and travellers from the capital can use our Delhi to Prayagraj distance guide for that leg.
Where is Prayagraj and the Triveni Sangam?
Prayagraj, known as Allahabad until it was renamed, sits in southern Uttar Pradesh at one of the most sacred spots in all of Hinduism: the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical, unseen Saraswati river. Its very name, Prayag, means the place of confluence or sacrifice and it has long been revered as a Tirtharaj, the king of pilgrimage sites. Here pilgrims take a holy dip, believed to cleanse sins and grant liberation and boats carry devotees to the exact point where the waters meet.
The Sangam is the beating heart of the city and its spiritual life and a visit here, especially at sunrise, is deeply moving. You can see the clear green Yamuna meet the wider, siltier Ganga, their different colours flowing side by side before mingling and join the pilgrims on the ghats and boats, a timeless scene of Indian faith. Priests perform rituals in the shallows, birds wheel overhead and the whole place hums with devotion, making even a short visit unforgettable.
The Kumbh Mela
Prayagraj is world-famous as the principal host of the Kumbh Mela, the largest human gathering on Earth. Held at the Sangam, the mela draws tens of millions of pilgrims to bathe in the sacred waters at the astrologically auspicious time, when the positions of the planets are believed to make the confluence especially holy. Sadhus, saints and akharas process to the river for the great bathing days and a vast temporary city of tents rises on the sands to house the multitudes.
The Maha Kumbh 2025: the most recent great Kumbh, held from 13 January to 26 February 2025, was the largest gathering in human history, drawing hundreds of millions of pilgrims over its weeks, an event of almost unimaginable scale.
The cycle: a Kumbh is held at Prayagraj periodically, with a Purna or Maha Kumbh roughly every twelve years and an Ardh Kumbh about halfway between, so the next major melas are some years away.
The Magh Mela: every winter, in the Hindu month of Magh, a large annual mela takes place at the Sangam, a smaller but still remarkable spectacle of faith that gives a taste of the Kumbh in the years between the great gatherings.
If your visit coincides with a mela, expect vast crowds and plan far ahead for transport and accommodation, but also an unforgettable, humbling experience of devotion on a scale seen nowhere else in the world.
Other places to visit in Prayagraj
Beyond the Sangam, Prayagraj is rich in history and heritage:
Allahabad Fort: the great fort built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century beside the Sangam, home to the ancient Ashoka Pillar, the revered Akshayavat or immortal banyan tree and the underground Patalpuri temple. Parts are under army control, so check access.
Anand Bhawan: the elegant former home of the Nehru family, now a fascinating museum of India's freedom struggle, set in lovely grounds, with the neighbouring Swaraj Bhawan nearby.
Khusro Bagh: a peaceful walled Mughal garden with the beautiful sandstone tombs of Prince Khusrau, his mother and sister, a quiet oasis in the busy city.
Bade Hanuman Temple: also called Lete Hanuman, the temple of the huge reclining Hanuman near the Sangam, a much-loved shrine believed to be submerged when the Ganga floods.
All Saints Cathedral: a striking colonial-era Gothic church, one of the finest in India, also known as Patthar Girja.
When is the best time to visit Prayagraj?
The best time to visit Prayagraj is October to March, when the weather is pleasant for the Sangam, boat rides and sightseeing. Winter is also the season of the Magh Mela and, in its years, the Kumbh, so it is the most spiritually vibrant time, though also the most crowded.
Summers, from April to June, are very hot in both Jaipur and Prayagraj, so if you travel then, plan for early mornings and evenings by the river. The monsoon swells the rivers dramatically, sometimes affecting the Sangam and boat access when the waters run high. For a comfortable visit, aim for the cooler months from October to March and start early for the magical sunrise at the confluence, when the light on the water and the gathering pilgrims make for an unforgettable scene.
Combining Jaipur and Prayagraj with your trip
Prayagraj sits at the heart of Uttar Pradesh's great pilgrimage circuit and from Jaipur it works best as part of a grand North India journey. Since Jaipur is a Golden Triangle city and the route runs through Agra, the natural itinerary is Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, then east to Prayagraj, Varanasi and Ayodhya. Use our things to do in Jaipur guide to enjoy the Pink City and if you are exploring Rajasthan, our Jaipur to Udaipur distance guide covers the City of Lakes.
For the wider pilgrimage, our Jaipur to Varanasi distance guide covers the leg to the Ganga, only a couple of hours from Prayagraj and our Jaipur to Ayodhya distance guide covers the Ram Mandir city. We can build the whole circuit, from the forts of Rajasthan to the sacred rivers of Prayagraj, within our Delhi Agra Tour Packages.
